Used to work the shake/malt machine in a 50's/60's themed diner and I can tell you what the poppin is. When your ice cream is too cold/hard it won't mix correctly, it just moves around and the air bubbles become pockets and then pop. You just hear the machine sort of whirling and popping. You have to add milk and/or wait till it heats up for a minute or two until you can make shakes, Blizzards, whatever... Hope that was helpful.
