That's been the hurdle for lithium battery powered cars..until now. The batteries in the volt are a brand new chemistry that doesn't do that. This battery is completely new, and is supposed to retain 80% of its capacity after 10 years, after which it will still be good for other things like UPS backup power. By then there will be better batteries, swap out and keep driving even farther with more power.
Understand what these guys are talking about, you can drive 40 miles without the use of fuel, you will save a shit-ton for driving your car now, that makes the price more than fair, the cost of recharging it will more than likley raise it buy 40 dollars, you will save thousands of dollars in the long run, granted you don't wreck it lol, people should give this thing a chance, and stop scoffing at it because of stereotypes about GM, if you ahve the money, you should buy it, it could be greatness
Why should people be interested in supporting scatterbrained GM on this project (Volt) when they had a perfectly good idea and destroyed the EV1s which everyone loved, even though those cars were far from perfect. I trust GM about as far as I can spit on them.
Dude, don't be so picky, sure its not technically electric by the gas engine, but officially it is because the gas engine is to recharge the battery, the gas engine can be replaced by a clean diesel, natural gas, or even a fuel cell, besides it has to have some sort of motor strictly because they cannot make a self-perpetual machine (laws of physics) until they can make a battery run for a few hundred miles before recharging which may not be for a few decades anyways
The Volt concept car (estimated $30K price) was cool, but the Volt production car (estimated $40K to $48K) is hideous and bland. Nobody is going to pay $40K to $48K for a vehicle that automobile critics have dubbed "Grandma's electric vehicle". You can get TWO Toyota Prius cars for the price of the one Volt.
few people know there is an American made car called Toyota Voltz...yes no kidding
made at NUMMI Fremont plant exported to Japan few years ago branded as TOYOTA VOLTZ. The U.S. version is what we know as the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe.
You know, I see a lot of these and my thinking has always been that maybe they want exactly what they are lobbying against.
Seems to me that if I was an Oil company and wanted to make sure people kept using petroleum would be to BLAST and MOCK any attempt to promote an electric vehicle.
They can't change how things are done overseas, but they can attempt to torpedo American made vehicles.
The Volt will begin America's transition away from Petroleum fueled vehicles.
your an idiot, do some research first. the EV1 had issues with the batteries they were using. they were dangerous, and sure they could get your farther, but they would take so much longer to charge.
The VOLT is a HOAX, not intended to be built or sold. GM has already cautioned that it won't be a part of the MPG calculations, becuase they don't intend to make many, if any.
If serious, GM would bring it out with proven lead or NiMh batteries, and STOP LYING about the EV1.
VOLT is a HOAX. If GM were serious, it would bring it out with lead-acid or NiMH batteries, which would prove the concept; as it is, they had to push the golf-cart VOLT up the hill at Chris Paine's party.
GM already had 18 years since they announced the EV1, 2 years since it announced the VOLT hoax; this is a national security issue, no time to postpone oil-free cars.

i'd love to buy the volt. but if some other companies are making their own plug-in hybrid i'll buy from them (perhaps toyota) why? coz i remember how General Motors (General Morons for some) crushed 'BRAND NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES'. if anyone else is interested wats the documentary "WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR?". we had electric cars in our hands and we fought to keep 'em but they chose to crush those eco/wallet friendly cars and came up with HUMMER. . . WAT A WASTE
70,000$ later for the car, might be able to get in late 2009 and 2010 from the LIMITED amounts they will sell and hopefully full production by late 2011..
It would cost about 55 cents a charge to run the Volt. A gas engine would cost $4 or more for the same mileage. GM is fighting for its survival. A total electric car will be coming within the next 5 years.Utility companies have said they have excess capacity for when the Volt would normally charge(After the evening commute).Solar charges are dropping in price due to new SIGS technology. The Volt is a good start for a cleaner planet.
Judging by the responses there are a bunch of "who killed the electric car" fans here posting. From now on when I buy a new car it will always either be the most fuel efficient car on the market or a car that doesn't use gasoline. I'm waiting for the volt.
The Volt and the fuel cell are the same they both don't work, this is a total scam from GM, are trying to hold on to the internal combustion engine so that they can keep selling part to cars, instead of sell all electric cars. I hope GM fold for being stupid, and for putting this country in danger by trying to keep us on oil!
In fact the Volt is just another hybrid with a different system
its 1.4 Liter 4 cylinder gasoline engine as big as the Chevy Aveo compact car will still need coolant, spark plugs, oil filter, a tuneup and an oil change...so whats new
same old saturday morning oil and filter change !
GM had an all-electric EV1 with 140-mile EPA certified range, and demonstrated a "range extended" version.
Instead of selling the EV1 for CASH, GM arrested willing buyers and crushed every one of them.
Now, you are supposed to BELIEVE them???
If GM were serious, it could just resume production of the EV1. The workers are there, just laid off, the factory is empty, the PSB batteries still exist...
So, I'm starting to seriously wonder: are you a skeptic, or just have a beef with GM? I keep finding your name on anything that has to do with the Volt, insisting that "GM is Lying" or "It should be here now, but pure electric". I gotta tell ya, dude, that gets old fast. Understanding that the EV-1 had a maximum range, in perfect conditions, of over 100 miles, as does your RAV-4EV, it doesn't mean that GM doesn't want to put it out. Sheesh! Calm down!
You won't ever get one; if GM were serious, it could just resume production of the EV1. The factories are empty, the workers are laid off, the PSB batteries are off-the-shelf, the design is known. For $34K each (the residual of the EV1 PSB version) GM would sell a million. Instead, it goes through this Lutz psychodrama...stupid.

GM had a 140-mile-range EV1 in 1999, and showed "range-extended" versions.
Instead of producing them, GM lobbied CARB to kill the program.
Instead of selling the EV1 to willing buyers, GM had them ARRESTED, and paid money to CRUSH each and every EV1.
Then GM sold control of the NiMH patent rights to a Chevron Oil (Standard Oil) unit, cobasys.
