As a child at the baby sitter's apartment in the Bronx, this program was the delight of a child who remembers Andy's laughter, Froggy, and a fascination with Sabu's world. Television was glorious in the 50s!
As a sidebar, Vito Scotti (Rama), ubiquitous character actor of films and TV from 1940's onward, appears in "The Godfather" (1972) as pastry shop owner Nazarino & in five "Columbo" episodes; also guested Andy Griffith Show, Batman, Bewitched, Bionic Woman, Bonanza, Charles in Charge, CHiPs, Farmer's Daughter, Get Smart, Golden Girls, Happy Days, Hawaii Five-0, Hogan's Heroes, Mad About You, Man From U.N.C.L.E., My Favorite Martian, Perry Mason, Police Woman, Rawhide, Virginian, Who's the Boss?
Andy Devine was content to show footage of jungle (Whoops!), rainforest animals in combat. Nowadays, he would have to go to India himself and get perilously close to dangerous creatures while telling kids not to try this themselves.
@hhrtwo No dis-credit to ole Andy Devine, but Smilin' Ed McConnell started this show on the radio in the 1940s, and invented the characters-Midnight, Squeaky & Froggy, and was the first host on the original TV show...sadly Andy is the one who is always remembered even though he only did a few episodes...also, Froggy's voice changed in the later episodes, wasn't nearly as cool. This clip is Froggy's original gravely voice.
Albert Brooks used to joke about how Froggy the Gremlin might've livened up Preisdent richard Nixon's TV speeches.

Hot shirtless males - I know that was one reason I watched so intently at the age of 6...

If you hadn't known dear old Andy, and saw a stout, homely middle aged
man goofing off with kids, would you want YOUR KID around it?
Shame how society has deteriorated to where a kindly neighbor who
likes children would be suspect and probably reported to police.

When smilin' Ed died, Andy took over. He always reminded me of an overweight older bro of Andy Griffith

Gunga Ram and Rama both moved to Chicago in the late Eighties and opened Seven Elevens.
abukamoon 2 years ago
Correction, Gunga Ram was played by Nino Marcel. Scotti played Rama in a movie, "Sabaka".
camaysar222 2 years ago
Actually, Rama is not played by Sabu. Believe it or not, it's Vito Scotti, the same Italian actor who used to square off against Froggy the Gremlin!

Dear Hhrtwo,
The series began on NBC radio and later on
NBC TV with "Smilin Ed"McConnell. But..Mr.McConnell died in 1954 and Mr.Devine
became the show's second and last host/performer. Mr.Devine mc'd the show from 1957 to 1960.

I always thought it was SMILIN ED....Have I lost something??

There was a "Smilin' Ed," but I thought he was on radio. Anyway, Andy Devine was clearly the star here.
