I thought the dad in this was a total nonce. If you google it and see the photos from the neighbours perspective it's unbelievable the thing was allowed to be built, he actually built it without approval but then 'punching the air' managed to get his bad planning approved. My sympathy is for the neighbours having the knob head dad parading across their view.
Just another house... take it, but in on another place and you'll have the same feeling... but nothing remembers to the mill.
No sound of moving water, no sound of turning sharfts and wheels, no sound of the moving belts, hoppers and machinery... no shuffling sound of a water wheel turning outside.. nothing left from the mill, only the name... erasing architecture
@SteffenReichel - This house is brand new. It is not an old working building which has been moved.
The owner saw an outlined sketch of a water mill on a pot of yoghurt, found a designer in america and had the building's parts made and shipped to the UK.
Look at barn conversions. There is nothing to say that it is barneqsue inside apart from its outter shape.
Taking a building that has a purpose and finding a new use for it IS architecture, that is the point.
@flajjer23 that's my dad who built the house while juggling three shops and a family and I can tell you that Kevin McCloud is the biggest arsehole you will probably ever meet. even though the fact that you go on the show is voluntary he responds to your hard work that you could squeeze in before shoot with unmasked despise and iritation that your selfless devotion to channel 4's money pile without reward!
It seems to me, from the neighbour's photos that I've seen, that they would be unable to look out their window at any point without you having full view of what they are doing. If you and your family didn't want to see them looking out their window, then building should have been kept strictly to building regulations. You can't blatantly invade someone's privacy & then cry foul.
Caused quite some controversy this particular episode of the much enjoyed series.... try googling 'grand designs water mill' or 'Chilterns water mill' and read some of the eye watering stuff that has been posted in the various forums following its airing....
I reckon when you a build a one off in a secluded position you are invoking some fundamental perhaps almost neanderthal instincts within us and each other instincts which are probably their to help our self preservation - without getting into who is right or wrong - The Psychology is like taking a look back into our distant past
Where is the insulation?

I hate the colour of this house, it should be maybe a lightish brown.

This was NOT a replica of a watermill, just a plain house, nothing else :(

Kevin McCloud is seriously the best tv-presenter I know. Very secure he guides us through the projects and always with spot-on conclusions.
Cheers from Sweden :)

@samclimbs Could you try and explain the last sentence a bit better. It doesn't read too easily.

22 years in the making, i do wonder if you could ever really enjoy it or if you would lose enthusiasm for living there.
