Anthony LaPaglia characer is not extraneous. In this type of movie every "naughty" guy needs a bff to set him straight and head him in the right direction since he's been doing the same crap for years. And in this case he also needs an abandoned daughter to forgive him his a*sholeish ways...perferct casting and story telling.
