  • I'm not a big expert on piano playing, but...he's good. I don't get why people have such a problem with him. The facial expressions are cool! It's like he's hung on ecery single note.

  • I love this one.. he is so poetry.. He really puts a calm spirit into this Nocturne.. Even though he might not be Chopin expert as some but an allround expert He is a real poet around romantic music-actually all music- sometimes it work sometimes it dosen't that's how art is :)

  • brutal

  • Trés sublime.

  • Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Listen to the music! It's heavenly!

Dont bother commenting on his facial expressions!

  • I don't mind the facial expressions as long as they don't interfere with the playing. Like on Rachmaninov's prelude op 23 no 5 he totally flubbed because he was trying to be so dramatic. It was terrible to watch a professional desecrate my favorite piece I have been trying to learn for the last 6 months.

  • 1.The fact is that Lang Lang doesn't shit a few days before the concert. Yes! He shits on stage while performing. And after haven't shit for several days, he feels such a sense of freedom and happiness that he does all those face expressions. But don't be scared, he wears diapers. So you wont notice anything if you sit in the first row. After the concert he always check the diapers. If he founds a big dark morron that means he was good, if he founds lot of small bowles that means the sound...

  • regardless of his merit as a pianist or your own personal opinion of him as a person, classical music needs people like lang lang to get people who are not accustomed to classical music to get interested. let's not be so tacky and rude to a person who goes out there and brings people who wouldn't otherwise have known the beauty of classical music to the world of classical music. and i doubt you would be saying the same thing if lang lang was a white person. you're pretty transparent.

  • It seems you are trying to say I am a racist.

You know, I am from Italy. We are not racists. We don't have racism in our history. My comment doesn't have nothing to do with where he comes from nor if he's dark or white.

As you are from the US where rasism still exists you think it's the same in the rest of the world. But it isn't.

  • geez, dude, while there still are racism in America, with Obama, US is the only nation to have elected a racial minority president amongst the first world nations. Btw, there are plenty of racism in Italy according to your president, as do everywhere else. i don't know whether you are a racist or not, but it's a fact that even the most subtle of our racial bias do tend to influence our perception of a given person, especially if one is antagonistic to that person to begin with.

  • I do really agree with everything you said here, but still would like to ask you something. Does 88 in your nickname stand for what I think it does? Thanks in advance.

  • I don't think you're a racist -- I don't even know you.

I don't think Italians are racists -- I haven't met them all, and the few I have met are not racists.

I think Italy under Mussolini was fairly racist. So I disagree with your historical analysis.

  • The success Lang Lang has doens't match with his playing. Mitsuko Ushida also makes lot of facial expressions. But she really feels the music. Lang Lang only makes faces. But you can't compare Mitsuko Ushida with Lang Lang. She is a real musician. Lang Lang is just a wannabe. His way to play is just vulgar.

  • I do agree that the success of Lang Lang doesn't match his skill as a pianist. But regardless of your personal opinion of him, he still is an extremely skilled pianist, and he gets people who would never spend money on classical music to buy and enjoy classical music with his colorful personality, of which you might personally opine to be "vulgar." That's why he makes more money than other pianists who are just as good if not better than him purely as a pianist. And I'm all fine with that.

  • @supersonic767

    Sick psycho, go away!!!

We don't need your kind of rubbish here!!!

  • 2...was not so good. In an interview he told that the smell also means something, but he didn't want to say what. This is his secret.

I posted this comment because after watching his video I felt so inspired that I had to translate my inspiration in words.

Lang Lang you are the KING.............................................of the morrons

  • youre weird

  • I still feel as I do about Lang Lang in general. One can play classical music, feel it deeply, and not be so exaggerated in their overall manner.

When my wife gave birth to each of our three kids, those moments were the happiest of my life. But I never jumped up and down on a couch!

People experience intense emotions differently. Lang Lang makes it so exaggerated so as to make sure you know he's excited, exultant, happy, sad, etc.. Again, it just doesn't feel genuine, to me.

  • Listen with your ears, not your eyes.

  • đánh như cứt

  • He is very good at the piano, no question. But his whole theatrical thing is so contrived and it just doesn't work for me. I know that I am in the minority here because he is so celebrated. He's either overly animated or as in this case, seemingly entranced in his performance. Cheap theatrics if you ask me, but no one is. If others enjoy him and feel he is sincere, then it's not for me to judge. This is just my opinion.

  • @justwarren : I believe that you are the only person that "criticized" him with such a high level of language that it does not seem a criticize =D...i agree that he may act too much when he plays...but he does not play music, he acts music, and he does not have to read any score because the music is inside him. that is my opinion =D

  • I agree with you. He over performs all of the time. However it is because of this youthful vitality he is bring classical music to a whole new generations who would otherwise listens to hip hop and rap.

  • @justwarren It's not about being theatrical. Playing romantic era pieces require more than just playing the right notes. It may look silly, but the constant swaying and facial expressions are just pianists' way of being connected with the music on a deeper level. I never understood why pianists did it until I started learning pieces like this, and when you really get into it, you almost can't help moving around like that.

  • Exactly. As a flutist, my expressions are ridiculous to watch, but once I'm lost in the music itself, there's really no room for facial constraint when my entire mindset is completely focused upon the movement and flow of the piece and the emotions it lead to.

  • Chinese not only are great players, I see that China now manufactures pianos as well...who would guess...

  • what dont they manufacture lol?

  • wow! what a tasteful performance!

  • Quelle finesse et magnifique toucher, tout en douceur, dans cette interprétation ! J'ai beaucoup apprécié.

  • Beautiful! The slow notes are falling like drops of rain, on the edge of randomness. Bravo Lang Lang! Also, he nailed the Polish folklore elements perfectly.

  • This should be an etude. It's training for genius.

  • it's a nocturne, not an etude

  • I'm sorry you couldn't see the humour I tried to sprinkle in there when I wrote that comment. Imagine me saying that to a group of people and then you come forward and respond like that! LOLOLOL!

  • What a superb performance. Lang Lang really is a wonderful pianist

  • Comment removed

  • Wow... I have my Grade 8 exam soon and I would love to play like this!!!! Probably not though!!

  • Such a beautiful nocturne. It;'s much too difficult for me, though...damn it, Chopin!

  • The sounded expression is wonderful, but the physical appearance is unnecessary. I don't see overdone expression like this when he performs more technically demanding pieces. Of course, all great pianists have distinguished themselves through the sounds they create; Lang Lang is, I think, skilled beyond the need to over-exaggerate like this, and watching him do so is obnoxious.

  • on dirait qu'il joui sur le piano mais bon à par ça quand tu sais jouer ce morceau tu vois à quel point il joue bien surtout au niveau d'interpretation

  • fa sognare...

che bravo Lang Lang ..un 'interpretazione "sanguigna"!

    favoloso

  • He play this wonderful.. Regarding his face expressions, you don't watch music! You listen to it! And also I think its lovely to see how he enjoys playing! :D

  • I was not a huge Lang Lang fan...until i saw him working with the children of his foundation. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy and he played this very well.

  • lang lang played this well.

  • I agree, the playing is amazing, but the facial expressions are kinda creepy...

  • He really looks like having reaching cloud 9 or something more than orgasm, he he he...

  • To be honest this aas close as it gets

Wagner hasnt got a patch on this

The teardrops at 4 46 can equate with so many different things.

  • Thats not even mentioning the effect of 3s againts 4s

    OMG

  • This guy should put a mask to hide his orgasms

  • LOL, ur so funny!!!!!

  • I really like this interpretation of this Nocturne. Lang Lang plays this as if he has written it himself, and he is feeling the music.

  • playing is awesome, but the dude is creeping me out

  • Comment removed

  • lol it looks like he's having an orgasm at 5:09

  • Looks like he's getting it sucked at 5:38 lol

  • rofl

  • I don't get the guys who think Langlang is famous just because of the Chiense. And what?! propaganda??! wtf you talking about. He wouldn't have been able to play in Carnegie Hall if he sucked. And with the facial expressions....Just take it in and try feel the music like how he does. I think his movement on the piano is typical for something from the romantic era. All musicians have their way to express the music, I mean look at Glenn Gould, He sings while he plays.

  • Glenn Gould went completly bananas when he played!

  • Gesu!

  • My wife had the same childhood teacher as Melvyn (he is damm very good); when I show facial expressions, she threatens me by saying I look like Melvyn and can't bear to see me play anymore! Ok I am chinese so I can make comments about LL and MT...

  • Man, check out meylvn's D 960; crikes that unison chord (?g); he hits it and swings his whole arm and body down to the right hand side! Cool or what? Is it necessary? May be?

  • Jeees, he is sooo distracting isn't he??!!!!!

Hmmm, other asian over-facially-expressive contortionists would have to include Mitchiko Uchida and Melvyn Tan.

  • Comment removed

  • I do better keeping my eyes shut when listening to Lang Lang. Beautiful pianist, but god is his over emotionalizing facials distracting. One moment I think he's going to vomit, then it appears he's having an orgasm.

  • You DID mention where we can view your outstanding talents but I have lost the name of the site. Please post it again so we can view what talent is supposed to be all about......can't wait!

  • Everybody just SHUT UP and ENJOY the music. Your caustic comments just shows you guys are buying into his frame, and therefore are Lang Lang's bitch/(es).

  • Best Facials... EVER!!!

  • Spaaarklerr :] yaay~

i got so freaked by his face in the beginning

  • but a good one nevertheless

  • more than the same goes to you . . .

  • At least he has the technical superiority to back up his expressions. I've seen beginner level pianists making these expressions with flawed technique and the effect is very, very bad.

  • what is, what means sparkler???

  • LOL 2:17

    "Oohoo!"

  • Fantastic

  • LMAO, Sparkler!

  • Sparkler!!!

  • lol Sparkler! his facial expressions scare me.. *o*!

  • Sparklerrr:D

  • lol how many people here are sparklers? and sorry sclyfes1212, inside joke...

  • yup yup. sparkler. but also classically trained pianist.

  • yay thats awesome, how many years have you been playing for?

  • WOW.. he feels the music,,,

that's all what the pianist need..

  • Oh my gosh, I love him.

  • i am sincerely sorry but

he looked like he jizzed his pants at 1:40

    i couldnt resist

  • he's just getting his nut, leave him be.

  • When one does not watch his facial masturbating, he actually plays musically for once.....too bad he doesn't do this kind of playing more often

  • Listen to Dubravka Tomsic playing this nocturne, I think it's the best version.

She was disciple of Arthur Rubinstein, a great Chopin performer.

  • No offence but it doesn't matter for me whetter she performs it better than him or not.

I just think he plays beautifull and his expressions make it so great!

You can see he is so passioned about this!

  • I'm not saying this video isn't wonderful...I rated it with 5 *

  • yeah dubravka tomsic

  • CUT IT WITH THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS PEOPLE. I can't believe you can't see this musical genius. Is not the playing all you should be worried about?

  • Dont look at him! Then this is perfect!!

  • His facial expressions....are too..extreme. But that's just my opinion. I think he's overdoing his expressions on purpose..like he's trying very hard to be much more passionate than he already is. Yes, he is very passionate..but..not as much as his expressions exagerrate.

  • Agreed. My barber uses the same facial expressions when he cuts my hair. Makes it hard for me to look in that 'ol mirror.

  • absolutely wonderful!!!!

  • ORGASMIC!! XD

  • Comment removed

  • You have no right to say that to him. His a very good pianist.

  • Sublime

  • BEAUTIFUL! masterpiece! I play guitar myself but piano is one of the most beautiful sounds

  • I must admit that I'm usually not a big fan of Lang Lang's, but he plays this piece so beautifully. I think the reason is he doesn't let his ostentatious display of his impeccable technique get in the way of the music. The spirit of Chopin shines through quite well in this nocturne and Lang Lang performs it remarkably! Bravo!

  • actually as a huge skeptic of lang lang I completely agree. He is finally showing that he might grow to become a real pianist. The way he played this was quite beautiful.

  • beautiful creation by lan lang afterall he is the global brand ambassador of audi

  • javedxxxx: This nocturne obviosly is not from lang lang. its byFrederick Chopin.

  • hhahha 1: 48

  • This is so beautiful. Forget what he looks like. Just listen the beautiful music.

  • I feel as if I should offer him a cigarette, after that "performance" wow!

  • that is his unique methodology of winning freedoms from 'signifying chains'.

    Very smart person.

  • ...piano's are fcking sexy XD

  • At least he is not sitting there like a robot. Overreaction is better than no reaction at all.

  • I'd say that robot pianists have certain dignity, like Horowitz for example - and you can still clearly see they're deeply passionate about music. And their sound is just as good as overreacting pianist stereotypes like this one.

  • dont look at the guy just listen =)

  • i dont like the way he is turning his head

its over acting and irritable to see

    but the piano?

    its great

    nice musician

  • he is just putting on a show, he ruined this piece by making those facial expressions... awful gestures

  • I think when ur brain is creating such a phenomenon, you dont have the mind power to "make" faces. I would imagine they just happen as a by product.. I mean, when somethings funny, you dont have to "think" about laughing - its just a reaction.

  • not enough depth

  • i mean i can see why he makes those expressions, this is a very passionate song, i think i would act the same way

  • At 1:44 I was sure of it, this guy came for real.

  • LMAO thats so funny xDDDDD

  • I played this at a concert once when I was contemplating becoming a musician. I have to say, this is the best rendition I've heard of this piece so far. Perfection.

  • I really like listening to Lang Lang play, but what's up with him at 2:17?

  • Good stuff hey Vitali?

  • Who composed this piece? I would guess Liszt or Chopin, but I don't know for sure.

  • Obviously Chopin...It's so characteristic of him.

  • pure and heavenly with -- your eyes closed.. .

    soooo relaxing!

  • I am not a musician. But if I enjoy his music, then I don't care his face expression too much. Just use my ears. He is entitled to have his face expression.

  • This is true love. This is the epitome of beauty. I only hope to play it as beautifully as him. The music is equal parts devastating and beautiful...this is the most beautiful thing in the world. Best recording of this nocturne..no one, NO ONE on youtube plays this half as well as he does. Please don't make fun of him for his expressions...he is only feeling the music in his own way. The music is truly a piece of his soul.

  • ... Well said.

  • Gorgeous -- like rippling water....

  • such seamless fluidity....WOW.....

    Lang Lang is a beast.

  • If people want to complain about the faces he makes because he's passionate about playing, then they look at the faces people make when they are having sex. Im pretty sure they could care less what there faces look like. Or how about the faces we make when were passionate about anything. Some people stick out there tongue or fold there eyebrows when they concentrate. Its a little thing called having emotions and expressions. If you don't like it just open a new window, listen and shut up.

  • Brava, well said :3

  • Why thank you, thank you very much =3

  • well said. Rubinstein actually once admitted that playing piano is like having sex for him. lang lang's music has a sense of life which is the most precious.

  • For those who complaint him, just upload some of your master piece on youtube, and let's everyone judge you...

see how well you can play.

otherwise..... just shut up or go elsewhere!!!! OK ?

  • =] i agree...although i dont videos...but then again i didnt say he sucks lol

  • if you will buy me a steinway of 200.000 dollars, maybe I'll do it :)

  • really great! i was very happy to see his emotion so attached to his playing style. i am a singer but also play piano.

i can make emotional attachment to the arias i sing but when i play piano its not that easy as singing, but i do understand that music that is sincere and true to this level of experience, no one can stop one's passion of expressions, no matter how any audience would feel towards the piece played, everyone has their own style that they enjoy.

  • to those who keep on bashing him and his expression, i just have to say, it annoys me, too. sometimes even he's playing bothers me, but if he wasn't a great pianist, he would not have made it this far.

  • no it isn't

  • On what basis do you say this?

  • Can't stop listening again and again. Can't stand his facial displaying either just scroll down and read comment. So touched by the spirit of choping. Can't believe interpreated so excellent by this guy. Love it ! Heard Yun di Lee before, both are great. This guy? Hum, need scroll down and enjoy it. Again, I need Stand and give him a 5 Mins hands with eyes closing

  • hey, blankpianist...

have you ever seriously studied ego psychology before?

what the hell is 'true feeling'?

    hahahaha

  • I think he is referring to "true feeling" in contrast to artificial or manufactured expression. His contention is that Lang Lang's expressive actions are not accurately reflective of his relationship with the music, and that he employs these actions in an effort to artificially inflate the viewer's opinion of him as a pianist

One thing is for certain, only the Steinway piano permits this level of depth and dimension as far as musicianship goes.

  • "Pleyel's pianos are the last word in perfection" - F. Chopin, 12 December 1831. Worth hearing the difference, not that anyone can really play them well these days.

  • tel me more about pleyel pianos

  • Do any of you actually play the piano? I will tell you out of personal experience, that if you are truly performing from your heart, you are not concerned with how you look, or anyone else in the room. Whatever body movements and faces you make are purely from being so deep within the music. It is, in a sense, a visual representation of how the music affects the pianist. If you haven't achieved this level of depth, you can never understand the visuals of a true pianist, or Lang Lang.

  • Grandiose tout simplement

  • can't wait to go to one of his concerts

  • I am totally inspired to make my playing sound like this. (I can dream.)

  • He plays with so much emotion. What makes a true pianist is not playing the piece perfectly like a robot, but rather performing it from teh heart and from the soul. The way this musical genius has played this piece has truly brought Chopin back to life.

  • Pureté cristaline de l'interprète, magie de Chopin que l'on ne reconnait pas, hors-style, éternellement proche et humain

  • wish my version sounds so rich of emotion

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you!!!!! Very great sound and interpretation!

  • I admit his expressions bother me a little, but his interpretation is the best I've heard so far; so much feeling!

  • My Father who died this past Sat. July, 18 said the same thing about Andre Watt's. However, maybe the beauty in listening is closing the eyes. After all expressions lead to interpretation.

It is fun to 'see' music; though it may be really felt when there is nothing to see.

    Just listen

  • yes, you are the uneducated people who listen to people like lang lang and say "wow, that is true emotion and those actions are so much more fun to watch then someone who is serious." However, it is fake emotion, much like a good actor. What you should really be looking for is not acting in music, it is true feeling. Lang lang's entire life has been cushion after cushion, he will likely never understand any of the music he is playing.

  • I believe that for some people his expressions are funny but I think it's his style of getting involved into music which can be differnt from others. It's really harsh to comment that his expressions are fake or he is acting. I believe when such established artist performs on the stage he does not need to do acting and every expression of emotion comes from heart which may differ from person to person according to his/her emotional Intensity/Sensitivity level and interpretation...

  • Masterful!

I have heard other interpretations and none have communicated to me the sounds of this beautiful nocturne with such a love and sensitivity.

    A musical balm!

  • Sorprendente interpretación en todos los sentidos.

  • Such beauty in the music, such ugliness in the comments. Pearls before swine.

  • That is one heck of a beautiful nocturne.

  • Wow he's great!!

I'm going to see him tomorrow evining with Herbie Hancock at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam....

  • A monk escaped the temple and had a little fun to himself?? Agree, GREAT sound, but STRANGE looking. Too pretentious.
