  • Reminds me of saying im going to the loo at the cinema, and doing a bus run home

  • Hey, you guys should check out Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins 'This is it', amazing song!

  • She be wipp'en sweat and still kick'en as on the drums.

  • Who is the lady playing drums? She is absolutely fabulous.

  • @alancheryl1 Yvette "Baby Girl" Preyer

  • He seems so tamed in the verses, like he's focusing hard not to just "soul out" the song.

  • Sweet Freedom ~ dancing is free ~

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE ~

    Peace,

    V

  • The Lady On The Drums Was Really Killing It. Fantastic.

  • Is that William H. Macy from Wild Hogs? at 01:03?

  • @tntexplosivo haha it's ned flanders!

  • @tntexplosivo looks like a scruffy Jerry Springer to me!!

  • I am going to see him tonight!!!

  • Such a tight groove 00:19 - 00:51. Love how the guitar, bass guitar and bass drum are playing the same pattern (starting at 00:36)... oh yeah.

  • I love the 80's

  • i was there (=

  • the woman on the drums, is outstanding......

  • I like the whole thing but that backing vocalist on the the left...whew...nice!

  • The guy on the guitar singing back up looks like actor William Macy (@ 1:03)

  • That's Yevette 'Baby Girl" Preyer on the drums great!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is the organ player on a Hammond?...Is it a B-3?...It has a wooden frame....They don't make them anymore.....

  • @catzdogs1 The organ is a Yamaha,

  • @Smidget711 Thanks! It sounds so righteous. We have a similar organ in church, they tell me they don't make them anymore. I"m convinced they sound better that the high tech versions.

  • @catzdogs1 O.K. I just noticed...I realized Michael is playing the Yamaha....What about the organ encased in the wooden frame? Is that a Hammond B-3? They are valuable and obsolete.

  • yevette preyer best drummer !

  • i what have his baby

  • As a drummer of over 35 years experience - watch Yvette at the 1:26 mark. She maintains the beat and wipes her head without losing time.... That's talent - god given talent.

Guitar/keyboard/sax' player - Vocals and both hands (pedal perhaps?).

Backing singer - Vocals and move in time to the music

DRUMMER - BOTH hands...BOTH feet... AND vocals.

Listen to this again and pick out the work Yvette puts into the hi-hat and bass drum alone and try to copy her... Your legs will get tired!

  • Spectacular !!!!!!

  • actually better than the studio version!!! yevette preyer is the bomb!!

  • Michael and Steely Dan had the finger on the pulse of great American music....way before it was mainstream

  • @whoof1 fucking great comment

  • for all the annoying critics YOU TUBE has graciously offered to delete all future song titles and credits so that the average music lovers may be allowed to recognize good music for what it is.

  • I love listening to this cut, It rocks so hard. So damn smoooth.

  • Yvette Preyer is on my short list of favorite drummers. So overlooked.

  • I believe he also did back up vocals for Christpher Cross' "Ride Like the Wind"

  • great armoni! this song is hope!

  • Love this song, this guy has an amazing voice.

  • great song.I don't know why but it makes me feel happy and optimistic...

    I like it.x

  • Drummer Yvette Preyer really took this to another level with her fine playing. Guys, get on my back !! In the pocket !!

  • Who knew William H Macy could play bass so well ?

  • great song.....!

  • Best blue-eyed soul on the planet..a true genius with an incredible voice..

  • This song was written byRod Temperton, who is responsible for Michael Jackon hits and Heatwave hits.

  • Jerry Springer on bass...

  • This is a great song. I agree with everyone else's comments-- Michael McDonald has a great voice. However, we should not forget that this song was COMPOSED by the one and only Rod Temperton, also responsible for "Thriller," "Off the Wall," and "Rock With You" for Michael Jackson; "Give Me The Night" for George Benson; "Stomp" for the Brothers Johnson, "Grooveline" for Heat Wave; and countless others. Great performers deserve recognition, but so do great composers!

  • michael mcdonald is one of my all time favourite artists! he is great....sweet freedom is one of my all time favourite songs ever! often,in the daytime,i'll sing this song in my head....makes my day so much better! i love SWEET FREEDOM + THE GREAT MICHAEL MCDONALD.

  • I love the song! as well its meaning!! :D

  • I find myself throughout my days receiving random boners due to the fact that i am playing this exact and somewhat rad version of Sweet Freedom to myself on my mindPod as i stroll.

AND tell me that is not William H. Macy playing the bass and i will call you a liar and a tonk.

  • @rexxdangerman ...egads, I do believe that's Bill Macy...:)

  • @DoUWanna007 ......Lanice Morrison on bass

  • I always thought it was odd to have such an epic song for a run of the mill comedy... Amazingly soulful voice.

  • Thanks for posting this video

    Man what a voice

  • I LOVE the drummer in this video... She is jammin'... HELL YEAH!

  • Good vibes!

  • Bass player blows the first chorus but makes up for it on the second...

  • And THAT, my friends, is how a guitar solo should be played.

  • The Lady on the Drums, Yvette "Baby Girl' Preyer is great indeed!! So is Michael! The greatest sound in the world!!!!!

  • Great, great drummer. She's got bite. Really elevates this whole group of guys and gals. You can hear it on every tune in this show. There are weak drummers and then listen to this gal who has so much going on here. I'm telling you she has the real goods. SUPERB !!

  • "Milk and cookies, here's a chocolate chip!"

  • I've been listening to M. McD's music all night. I hate to turn it off to go to bed! Absolutely beautiful!

  • Silver fox

  • Sweet Freedom... What an awesome break up song... Especially played like this :)

  • hey Mr. McDonald when comes to Chile? I`m praying

  • Love this.

  • Great drums. Really kicks these guys up a notch. She's in the pocket. You need a good drummer who gets it. She does.

  • white man like a nigga voice.. whata combination..

  • I Love this song, incredible.

  • There are some singers whose CD's I'd buy without listening to a single song, just because the artist has so much talent. Besides Il Divo and Josh Groban I listened to just one Michael McDonald song and bought all of his CD's. Money well spent!

  • me too

  • Give the man and his band a hand!

  • 5/5 rate greatings from my mom =P

    lol and me to tbh

    tf-chris

  • Mr McDonald, we salute bro!!!

  • This guy has a great soul voice.

This tune reminds me of my school days. Such good memories of when I had no cares in the world.

And the film, Running Scared, is what put this dude in the spot light. Well deserved.

  • from Running Scared the movie

  • ...awesome!!

  • I LOVE YOU MIKE M!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sweet freedom., I like it......

  • Milk and cookies, here's a chocolate chip! Milk and cookies, I know that Steve likes oatmeal!

Look up "Camp Michael McDonald". One of the funniest things I've ever seen.

  • I WANT HIS VOICE!! xD He really is an amazing singer :P

  • Absolutely incredible! Love this 50 million times!

  • this song is one of those make you feel great songs one of my favorites

  • nice performance!

  • and all that hair!!! Amaizing

  • I love him too, but I am flipping through my channels the other night and he is on QVC promoting Obamacare, which had nothing to do with anything!

  • That's fair. But don't you think posting it once was enough.

  • I love his voice, he sounds like he's murmuring or being really moody!

  • ♫ shasta's free ♫

♫ shine the light and pee ♫

  • Great performance.

  • The Lady on the Drums is Great !

  • yeah she is.....Yvette Preyer....rock solid, grooves deep!

  • @KidKorrekt AND she sings too! Stunning

  • @KidKorrekt I like her bongos

  • @KidKorrekt Is she also the drummer for Kid Rock? That Sista is jammin.....

  • @KidKorrekt Oh yeah, she puts down that pulse! Sax is good but I did like the trumpets better on the original. Guitar does pretty good though. Good number!

  • this song STILL not on itunes.his version the best.i want it

  • Where did the original movie sound track go on this one? It was a great video.

fuckin bullshit! copyright infringement? fuck you this is u tube..I am getting very sick of all these changes to this fuckin website....lets fix it until its broke and sucks..

  • "Running Scared" with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines....its out there u can get it I swear ...

  • I think I might've already said I blew up a pair of speakers cranking this one up. I sure do miss Greg Hines, too.

  • isn't one of back up singers an american idol contestant from 2 or 3 seasons ago????

  • Desde Barcelona Increible lastima no poder disfrutar aqui de este momento.

  • written by Rod Temperton

  • Is that William H. Macy on bass? :-)

  • No, its Jerry Springer !!

  • Good song!

  • Impressive performance: all over the song, obviously drums, that make me jump with the rythm; but there's also a perfect bass, which is not so obvious. Guitar is just incredible. Backing vocals are very nice too. This video is worth watching again and again, of course using HQ. The whole group deserves 6 stars, but there are only 5.

  • that big girl was playing them drums!! lol

  • Yvette Preyer is amazing. She played with Issac Hayes prior to touring with McDonald

  • Can't believe the video from the movie isn't on youtube

  • That is some smooooooth music. Micheal is freaking awesome!

  • Excellent!!! I always loved watching michael perform!!!

  • ♫ chapstick free ♫

    ♫ shine a light on me ♫

    ♫ we'll keep the spirit alive! ♫

  • I want to kiss this man!

  • Bernie Chiaravalle 's guitar playing is nothing short of awesome! one of the most under rated guitarists in the big leagues as he shows in most videos he plays with Michael McDonald . the guy can play ! ....

oh and mike is truly a musical god and all the musicians that have played with him past and present are phenomenal musicians as well....

    peace ......

  • I can't believe they even took down the original Sweet Freedom music video. YouTube is becoming a total void as far as being able to view music videos goes.

  • yeah thats mad innit

  • This is so so good,

    damn his voice is wonderful

  • I never liked this song or michael mcdonald till i really listened to the words...that brought me to listen to more of his stuff and i realized he is great...i wshed i listened to more when i was a kid

  • I think Micheal Mcdonald dose not get the type of respect he sould get. he is a legend like luther, marvin, and Chicago. He is awsome, but sometimes i keep thinking of that time they had him on Family Guy and he was singing back up vocals for their coversation. LOL! many ppl didnt get it but if you know about him it is funny. He still is awsome.

  • Hes better than luther, marvin and chicago in my opinion.

  • So damn smooooth!

  • the best of Michael

  • He could just sing in my ear and that would be enoughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • it would be nice if we could download the song from i-tunes or some place and not have to settle for some lame ass live version!!!

  • I checked iTunes just now...

The karaoke version is up for download. 99 cent.

AND YOU KNOW YOU WANT THE KARAOKE VERSION.

    Admit it to yourself.

You want to be a karaoke star.

    "I want be karaoke-stahhh.

  • meh... i chekced i-tunes before i checked you tube. i dont like when artist refuse to release songs for sale. whatever the reason. and i've never liked live versions. don't know why.

  • Love this music :)

  • he is mine.

  • The soulful sound of Michael McDonald is second only to Michael Bolton. I celebrate the guy's entire catalog. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings 'When a Man Loves a Woman'.

  • Hahahahahaha! It's the classic "Bob" line from the movie Office Space - Hahahahahaha!

And if there's one ounce of truth to your quip we're gonna' have to GET A ROPE! Heh...

  • lol 0:25

  • That's Yvette Preyer on drums.

    Yvette is Rhythm Personified.

She lays it out, for the rest of the band to play it out.

  • Yeah definetly. Im glad another drummer recognized her solid playing. Shes very good and very at home with the instrument.

  • That's part of the reason to me why Mike and the band do draw you in because you don't see the big ego thing going on with any of them and I do think I read something in the past where he can still walk around wherever and not always be recognized so he's got the best of both worlds. He's a low key kind of guy in my opinion and from what I can tell, the rest of them are too. Makes them all the more attractive as a band.

  • dootsmasta

It's been a long time since I've been drawn to one voice and/or one band, but his voice drew me in and the band after that. True no one sounds like he does, but above all that, the band is made up of a group of great people that are very giving, kind and generous people. Don't ask how I know, I just do. Hope to see more of your videos in time.

  • I think it's fair to say Mike and the band are unpretentious. But consider this - Mike's stardom has always been in his music, per se. His Grizzly-esque appearance is a mere signature of that music. His image and personal life have never been idolized as a separate entity, so he has no reason to be a jackass like those whose popularity depends on an ever-present stream of celebrity madness. I don't think it's necessarily what the artists want, but it is what people want these days...

  • dootsmasta

Thanks for putting up all the McDonald related videos that you have in the past. Have enjoyed listening to them. I believe I read in the past that you're a musician also. Surely a musician of good taste.

  • Thanks for the kind remarks. I'm glad you have enjoyed the videos - there are more to add when I get around to it someday.

I am a musician at heart (and in the shower) more often than I actually play or perform at this point, but Mike's music always makes me want to do another gig. To call his flavor of soul "blue-eyed" really does it injustice. The energy he applies to his music transcends that category altogether, and he's in a class by himself. Nobody sounds like he does.

  • Age has caught up with Mike. Still pretty good, but not as good as he used to be.

  • Yeah. Maybe not so much in this particular concert, but it's been over five years since then. His performance at the DNC, though more symbolic than anything, was a clear indication of age in his voice. I wouldn't be surprised if he needs to have (or has had) nodules removed from his vocal cords.

  • I think this is a fantastic whole band performance. Love the smile on the bass player also. Mr. Chiaravalle has that guitar smokin' during his solo. As for Mike, his voice is still great, but when you figure how long he's used that voice the way he does, it's bound to take it's toll at least a little. He's still great in my book, heck the whole band is!

  • He can definitely still hold his own.

  • I don't think he has to hold his own.

He has a bunch of groupie chix who gladly hold it for him, in every city he shows up in

  • Actually I have never heard any bad stuff about him. Dont think he is a player so his missus would always hold him I hope !!

  • Yeah, Michael McDonald YOWZAH!

    He's is IT.

  • yeah, he sounds awful.

lmao! as if, he sounds f*cking amazing!

even if he's 'not as good as he used to be', give the guy a break? he's like, 56. and he sings better than 99% of people out there! :)

  • that was directed at RyuHayabusa06, btw!

  • Superb tune and backup musicians. The drummer Yvette Preyer is really kicking this band to a higher level as all great drummers do. Pretty impressive !!

  • WOW!!! he got one hell of a blues voice. Not being discriminating here, but he's amazing for white guy when it comes to blues/soul. He should be proud for the songs he sung. Top Artist he is. Brilliant singer!

  • Great feel good song..."you're right where I want to be...keep the spirit alive!"

  • Yeah Man! That was boiling especially at the end!

  • The bassist looks like William H. Macy. Drummer is kicking ass

  • I saw Michael and the Dallas Symphony last weekend here in Dallas. AWESOME! The band and especially the drummer rock.

  • That drummer gives me chills !!

  • sure

  • What do you mean by that gaspo? Good or bad?

  • Not good or bad. Great !!

  • is that kid rock's drummer?

  • fantastic

  • Fantastic...rock on Michael...

  • it make's me fell so good to be born in a tmie when we still have singer's like this .

  • God-like!

    Unbelievable voice!

  • this is music!

    I love this one;)

  • classic and timeless artist!!

  • LIVING LEGEND
