Bullshit. If you want real grip strength, buy yourself a "Captains of crush" or "Heavy Grip" hand grippers. Im using a HG 200 right now, and its made my grip excellent.
Technically you're not really "gripping" anything, but you are improving the strength of your fingers and overall hand strength which in turn can help your grip. However use caution with that exercise, it can be pretty brutal on your finger joints. Start on your knees then work up from there, as ayemonwin suggested below.
