How is it some teachers can give a lesson and make it so bloody boring and others can give the same lesson and make it sound simple and interesting just like this lady she explains things so clearly and keeps it interesting all the way through.
@rickyhoward100 Well that's why teaching is a whole subject and career in itself. You can be a highly intelligent biologist or composer but be a lousy teacher of your talent. I had a music theory teacher who was amazingly dry too and I just got completely lost in the forest that is music theory but this lady explained chord progression amazingly well and simple. There's alot more too it though like using augmentation, inversions, etc. but great lesson.
mam, 'm just an starting guitarist...... i saw ur video how to relate to chords of the major.....hw do i do dat for a minor scale....hw do i create it.....?
@richardjpugh Hello, isn't it because a 5(7th) chord would lead nicely back to 1 because there's a 'ti-do' sound like it's going home. i.e. If the tonic is C, then G7 would have a B, hence it would have a B - C sound (ti-do). Does this make sense? :D
She explains it really well. I wish she was my teacher haha.
And you may not know all the rules to music to play music, but it certainly helps to know what your doing even if you playing off of purely feelings. I think Bob Dylan would even agree with me there ;)
I have a question, would the same principle be applied the exact same way in the Minor Scale? Basically let's say put A at 12 O Clock, still left to right?
@NaztyNayt the circle of fourths/fifths is exactly the same in minor or major modes. Still, you might want to make a little change. In a minor scale, the fourth and fifth degree are minor, so if you want A minor or any other minor chord as your tonic (at 12 o'clock), you may want to change the chords to the right and to the left to be major instead, to get a proper dominant function and a stronger subdominant.
@NaztyNayt Yes, but there is less emphasis on the 2 chord (which is diminished in a minor key) and more emphasis on the 4 (which is almost always minor).
In this lecture she neglected to mention the fact that the 4 chord could be interchanged with the 2 and that the 7 could swap with the 5.
my god i was looking for this kind of info for like 8 years :O please send your thnx to the teacher from the netherlands..... here they wont teach you like that... i'm impressed... thank you for uploading and again...thank you for the teacher who explained...... with many kind regards.... from the netherlands....
It was meant to be pretty basic and strict. But do keep on looking at subsequent Boot Camps. #2 will talk about playing Five Foot Two, for three different levels of experience.
This is some pretty basic and very strict instruction. I was a little disappointed in the teaching until I saw the class is full of old people...so whatever...
I prefer composers that make this common chord progression look like beginners. I tend to find interesting chord progressions by selecting one chord such as E. Then I play an Eb, Eb minor, Eb7, 9, etc. Then I try doing the same thing as Eb only a half step up. Eventually I find a really cool variety of chords for a song.
@SaypheZonE / Hendrix understood all of this and then applied the extra noise. thats why it worked so well for him. Although many have tried to imitate his sound/style, very few even come close.
@SaypheZonE Yes you will if you'll ever want to be playing good music... Nobody wants yet another band mindlessly strumming power chords all damn day long.
@SaypheZonE I totally agree with you. You don't have to learn Theory in order to make great music. In fact, despite what other people say, most pop/rock musicians didn't/don't know (much less apply) the rules of Music Theory to their music because these guidelines are used to explain what composers of the Baroque Period were doing and are very limiting. We wouldn't have the modern 6-4-1-5 chord progression if the artists stuck to these rules.
Wow what an excellent lesson! I'm learning to walk my bass to the jazz standard "Autumn Leaves" and this tutorial totally demistifies the chordal progressions! The whole song is a circle of fourths/fifths progression! Thanks!
Please Help me, Does anybody knows a good chord transcription software also known as chord finder. I have a song but I want to find out the chord progression or the harmony to remix it.
Karen. I played solo trombone with a band for 40 years until my teeth caused problems. I have started teaching myself piano/keyboard and regularly trawl youtube and other sources for learning material.
I had a basic understanding about the circle of fifths/fourths, but didn't fully understand how to use the concept in a melody. Yours is by far the best explanation and after watching this video, I am now totally enlightened. Well done for putting it across in such a fun and interesting way
hi karen, this is Sam from Bangalore India. You are the best Piano Teacher on the internet. Your classes are so lively, informative and easy to remember and practice.
I also like the excercises you give for practice.
God bless you for being so generous in sharing your knowledge free on the internet. Ive spent thousands of dollars on classes but I can say your classes are the best. they are worth more than a million dollars. Thank you a million times from my heart.
I am having trouble understanding one thing though - in the circle of 5ths, C moving down to G is exactly 5 notes when your finger lands on G, but if you move up from C to F in the circle of 4ths, it's also exactly 5 notes, F being the note you land on.
Thank you for posting this video. I play by ear and for years I just felt like I intuitively knew where to go when writing a song. Now I can finally see the logic in it. Funny how human minds can perceive so much beauty in math without realizing it.
It's a Dominant Seventh chord, meaning in this case a major triad (G-B-D) with a seventh (G-B-D-F) on top of it, creating a tension towards resolving in the tonic.
@lotrringereras it means the chord includes the seventh scale degree in the key of G which is F#....G Major 7....or G7.... not g7 as you wrote... I know its major because her 1 chord is a C Major chord look at her chart.... With Major 7 chords like G7 you lower the 7th note in the scale by 1 degree.. so the F# turns into a F natural.. so ultimatley the notes for a G7 chord are G (1) B (3) D (5) F natural (7) << Looks like G Major right??? all you do is add the 7th degree of and lowerer it 1/2
Thanks so much. This video really helped me understand the circle, which i have never really got before. You are a great teacher. Wish I could attend your classes. Please keep uploading your videos...... best ever!!!!
This is definitely the one thing I have been missing in all my years of playing guitar. I never really bothered to do "theory", but, after so many years and hitting a block, this has opened up that locked door in my mind, and, I may just pick up and start going at it more creatively. Thank you!
@Sh3lz123 but still, there is a way to do it and thats not the right way. GDAEBF#and C# are on the right and FBbEbAbDbGb and Cb is on the left. thats just like saying that it dont matter if you call a F# in the key of G a Gb, there is a right way of doing things
@rootvalue guess what??? i am insecure....and so what?? so are alot of people but what in the world does that have to do with this video? nothing, so hush and mind your own comments ok? the circle is going in the wrong direction. Did i learn something from this video?? yes i sure did, but that dont change the fact that the direction is going in the wrong way!
@Sh3lz123 Its the Circle of Fourths...Like she even says in the video. Most people learn the Circle of 5ths because the Fifth is the most common Resolution in music...I'm not old just a music major I can understand your confusion.
@xPlanetEarth78x no no no that is NOT the CYCLE of 4ths, that is the circle of 5ths but its the WRONG WAY, the flats are on the left of c major and the sharps on the right of c major, now look at that video again and tell me what direction the flats and the sharps are going in, thats right, THE WRONG WAY! you trolz make me sick smh

HAHAHAHA THAT CIRCLE OF 5TH IS THE WRONGE WAY
Sh3lz123 1 year ago
@Sh3lz123 It works either way you do it.
richardjpugh 1 year ago 21
@Sh3lz123 but still, there is a way to do it and thats not the right way. GDAEBF#and C# are on the right and FBbEbAbDbGb and Cb is on the left. thats just like saying that it dont matter if you call a F# in the key of G a Gb, there is a right way of doing things

@Sh3lz123 HAHAHAHAHA YOU ARE PROBABLY A VERY INSECURE PERSON IF YOU POINT OUT FLAWS INSTEAD OF THANKING PEOPLE FOR THEIR EFFORTS.
rootvalue 1 year ago
@rootvalue guess what??? i am insecure....and so what?? so are alot of people but what in the world does that have to do with this video? nothing, so hush and mind your own comments ok? the circle is going in the wrong direction. Did i learn something from this video?? yes i sure did, but that dont change the fact that the direction is going in the wrong way!
Sh3lz123 1 year ago
@Sh3lz123 Its the Circle of Fourths...Like she even says in the video. Most people learn the Circle of 5ths because the Fifth is the most common Resolution in music...I'm not old just a music major I can understand your confusion.
OnyxSunrise 1 year ago
@OnyxSunrise i am a music major aswel and i know what i am talking bout
any book you read, any teacher yiou go to, any circle of 5ths you see anywhere will have the sharps on the right side of c major NOT THE LEFT SIDE
and clearly she has them the WRONG WAY!
Sh3lz123 1 year ago
@Sh3lz123 That's because it is a circle of 4THs. You should learn to listen better.
xPlanetEarth78x 1 year ago
@xPlanetEarth78x no no no that is NOT the CYCLE of 4ths, that is the circle of 5ths but its the WRONG WAY, the flats are on the left of c major and the sharps on the right of c major, now look at that video again and tell me what direction the flats and the sharps are going in, thats right, THE WRONG WAY! you trolz make me sick smh
