You know its a tall dude in a fur costume but your mind says "ok thats what a wookie looks like" and you believe it. in the new starwars movies all the creatures are CG and don't look as convincing and you know they are just CG.
movies like this really need to use more costumes and not CG, CG is getting to a the point where it looks pretty convincing but a really awesome costume just looks more 3D and real, because it is at least a real object. Like can you imagine if Chewbacca in the original star wars was a CG character it would have looked out of place and stupid.

I am hesitant about this movie. The visuals look great, and if done right, I think the story could be a very good one, but I think there is great danger of this becoming just another "elf" story.

I'm not a fan of the avatar series but I'm sure there ain't no blue people in the movie. I was wondering if Cameron and Mr. What-a-Twist guy were working together. Two minutes ago, I just found out that there two completely different movies. For the past year, I kept thinking Cameron is making a live-action movie based on a popular cartoon. Having two movies with a simlar title will lead to confusion.
Looks like great SFX, but not really a new story. In my opinion, it's just a retelling of the plight of the American Indian or on a wider scale, how 'evil' Earthmen can be to a poor, 'primitive' society. Too preachy. 'Yawn'. For that reason, even though it looks good, I will not see it. I'm sure there will be other good films out at the same time.
It isn't "preachy" if it's factual. Anyone with an average to thorough understanding of American history and it's 'interaction' with other countries and peoples know that most of the world see us as Imperialists and Invaders. And you are right, it isn't a "new story", it's a story that needs to be told and retold throughout all avenues. This truth shouldn't annoy you, it should move you.

What country IS the perfect example of the world? Finland? Australia? True, America was built on slavery. Americans were slaves to England and Spain to produce raw materials. I am hesitant about this movie. The visuals look great, and if done right, I think the story could be a very good one, but I think there is great danger of this becoming just another "elf" story.
Where there is a primitive, yet dangerous, morally superior foe to an amoral or evil humanity.
If the blue people aren't developed beyond, not aggressive if you leave them alone, hyperviolent when provoked, or don't have flaws or ugly cultural aspects, it will have fallen into that trap.

I'm not a fan of the avatar series but I'm sure there ain't no blue people in the movie. I was wondering if Cameron and Mr. What-a-Twist guy were working together. Two minutes ago, I just found out that there two completely different movies. For the past year, I kept thinking Cameron is making a live-action movie based on a popular cartoon. Having two movies with a simlar title will lead to confusion.

Looks like great SFX, but not really a new story. In my opinion, it's just a retelling of the plight of the American Indian or on a wider scale, how 'evil' Earthmen can be to a poor, 'primitive' society. Too preachy. 'Yawn'. For that reason, even though it looks good, I will not see it. I'm sure there will be other good films out at the same time.

It isn't "preachy" if it's factual. Anyone with an average to thorough understanding of American history and it's 'interaction' with other countries and peoples know that most of the world see us as Imperialists and Invaders. And you are right, it isn't a "new story", it's a story that needs to be told and retold throughout all avenues. This truth shouldn't annoy you, it should move you.

magikalme, my point is that I'm tired of 'anti-American' themes, although it may not be Cameron's intent. Yes, I am very familiar with American history and, yes, America has screwed on occasion, but....America has done many great things,as well. Why should they be ignored? Political correctness? Revisionist history? No thanks.

Not just American Indian my friend. Africans....Mexicans (native and expansion era).....Indians......Chinese....pretty much every native people on Earth can relate to this story. .......Its a story that has happened many times throughout history and continues to be a part of humanity. There is nothing new under the sun, so chances are if you are looking for a new story....you wont find it.

I agree completely darthracer. I find it depressing that with all the stories it could tell, Hollywood chooses to spend $500M just guilt trip Americans about their wealth and success. I'll skip Cameron's sermon as well, and hope lots of other do too.

And aliens was made like what, 20 years before halo came out? Even then I've seen aliens, starship troopers, star wars,star treck, played doom, system shock and marathon.
But these kids, man, all they can compare this is a sci fi video game Halo. Halo has to be the most overhyped, overtalked about. But people need to understand James Cameron started thinking of this since 1992 and he finished the project in 94 the ideas,you can tell some of Cameron ideas from this movie came from Aliens.
