  • The song is amazing! The deep voice...oh, it's amazing. I haven't seen much of the Brig, but this makes me want to.

  • That scene with Sara Jane is really sad...

  • @joelburgos69 I know :/

  • @TheEddiejones15 The SJA scene at 1:20 really touches all DW fans. The TERROR OF THE ZYGONS Sarah/Brig clip at 2:21 also touches. TOTZ was the final appearance of the Classic WHO UNIT team of Brig, Benton & Co, a team that had existed since the 2nd Doctor era. TOTZ is one of UNIT's best stories, too.

Love the Hinchcliffe-Holmes era, but they made a mistake in writing UNIT out of WHO. Holmes objected. Hinchcliffe insisted, but now regrets the unplanned way it was done.

  • Whoa whoa whoa. Where's 2:12 from? I've watched the classic series all the way through and I don't recall Six and the Brig ever meeting.

  • @MaskOfFlame That was the chlidren in need special, Dimensions in time

  • This video always brings a tear to my eye! One year gone and Nicholas Courtney still remains in my heart as if that tragic day was only yesterday! He will never be forgotten!

  • One sad year down, many more to go. Goodbye Brigadier.

  • Forever in our memories you will live on. A Doctor Who man without equal.

  • R.I.P Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart/Nicholas Courtney.

Can’t believe it has been a whole year already since you went to the great TARDIS in the sky.

We still miss you, splendid chap.

  • I cannot believe that it has been a whole year already! This video always makes me well up as the song and every single clip is slotted together in a collage of absolute perfection. I was lucky enough to meet Nick twice before he died and both times he was, the loveliest, most wonderful man I had ever met, and now I can no longer meet him it pains me when I hear his name, see him in an episode, see his face. Babelcolour, this is such a beautiful video and a perfect tribute to this wonderful man.

  • This wonderful Babelcolour video to the "Brig" is both a tribute and a celebration of the life of Nick Courtney. It has been a year since Nick passed away....WHERE does the time go?

Nick was a major part of a genuine "WHO Golden Age" Seasons 7-14. I urge all New Series fans to watch that era or you will miss some of the finest stories EVER.

Immense sadness in watching Nick go from vigorous young man to older man with a cane. A reminder to all to cherish each moment, as time waits on no one.

  • Excellent

  • one whole year since brigadier Alistair Gordon lethbridge Stewart/ Nicholas Courtney died R I P <3

  • @plink0988 It's shocking how fast that year passed.

  • Comment removed

  • @BabelColour exactly what i was thinking how quick time fly's by without our hero nicholas courtney was dearly missed and still is

  • This might be a dumb question, but why didn't you use the reference From the 11th Doctor?

  • @aFallenWolf I think this was made before that epsiode

  • who ever disliked this need to be shot!

  • One year later nearly, I still get choked up by this. Your image choices are perfect, and your editing flawless. You perfectly capture that friendship. The good times, the hard decisions. And most importantly, in a beautiful crescendo, the unflinching soldier, the character at his core. The reverence shown is a great tribute to the man behind that character.

  • @84Summers - A lovely post. Thank you.

  • wat ep is 3:20

  • @xEVILXMASTERx Enemy of the bane, its from SJA

  • @TheEddiejones15 no where he get into the car it looks 1980s 3:22is

  • 3:30 what ep

  • @xEVILXMASTERx If you mean when he shoots the big blue demon that's from the Seventh Doctor story Battlefield

  • You'll always give chaps with wings five rounds rapid, Brigadier! We miss you, Nicholas.

  • He is a cool character

  • I can't stop watching this. it is beatiful. This version of the song fits perfectly (i assume you just changed the pitch). it makes it sound like opera tenors are singing this. You are....this should...there are no words to describe how thankful we are for you making this tribute to an awesome character/actor

  • I think he may have been one of the few or only people in the world to have ever met or could have met all eleven Doctors.

  • Me: I'm not gonna cry. I'm not going to cry.

  • There will never be another Brig. like him.

  • Its been a year since nick courtney passed away, its gone so quick! I met him twice and he remembered the welsh mining town that i grew up in that was called ' llanfairfach' in the green death.

  • I saluted this tribute. Good Sir I thank you for this

  • 4 people.........are DUNDERHEADS!!

  • It's been nearly a year... can you guys believe that??? I certainly don't I still watch this and it feels like only yesterday we lost him.... Miss you Nicholas.. always.. xx

  • Another great one gone to the Great Liberty Hall in the sky. 8-(

  • If I remember correctly, the only living main cast members of Pertwee-era UNIT are Katy Manning, Richard Franklin and John Levene.

I HOPE that all of them are pulled together for a DVD commentary AND a solid documentary about the Pertwee era of WHO.

The Hinchcliffe-Holmes era, while considered WHO's finest, could not have existed without the solid foundation established by Barry Letts & Terrance Dicks during the Pertwee era.

  • There is still time to get this video (and Sarah's) onto the Zygon DVD release. Everyone must make their best effort to get the message out. GallifreyBase, Email, Telephone, Twitter, Facebook. Just get the DVD guys to recognise that video MUST be put on the DVD release of Zygons which comes out NEXT YEAR. There is still time to get this officially approved. Make it happen people!

  • Nicholas Courtney is currently 'stranded' in Peru.

  • Nicholas Courtney is currently 'stranded' in Peru.

  • An absolutely beautiful tribute to a wonderful man

  • Speechless. This is a stunning tribute to a marvellous man.

  • Lovely tribute!

  • You were amazing to the very end. We will never forget you. Rest in peace Brigadier Left-bridge Stuart, Nicholas Courtney

  • I only met him once. :(

  • @borgduck really? What was he like?

  • @eastwing329 Such a decent chap! I remember grabbing one of only a few pictures with his autograph already on it, some lucky sod had beaten me to a better picture, minus autograph. I was upset, like some pathetic baby. But, Nick insisted on signing this "young lads" picture, anyway! Splendid chap, without wings!

  • I was fortunate to meet Nick many times and he was always the most charming and truly nice guy you could hope to meet. I'll miss him.

  • Wonderful chap.

  • Hey Stu, this video still gets me, as does the Sarah-Jane one. Would you ever consider doing a version with the Brigadier's death in it from The Wedding of River Song, or would that be too much would you reckon?

  • Yeah Alistair you were never such a dunderhead as they seemed to think. You were a swinger.

  • what is the name of this song?

  • @eastwing329 never mind

  • @eastwing329 My Immortal

  • Thank you for such a great tribute to a wonderful character and a great man.

  • The Brigadier, typical British stiff upper lip, cool under fire & a good friend of the Doctor. Sadly missed.

  • Wonderfully done old chap! This is in my favorites forever...

  • How could 3 people dislike this :/

  • What is Croma?

  • @TheEddiejones15

Cromer is a place. I think place on coast of England popular for family holidays

  • @macsprock1 Ok, thanks :)

  • In tears again watching this.

  • What can be said that hasn't already been said, Stuart? This makes me shed a tear, laugh fondly, and punch the air in exaltation. The Brig was and is a great creation, and Nick Courtney was and is the ultimate splendid chap. Just beautiful. Many thanks!

  • i love how it goes from sad scenes of the brig to the brig kicking some ass :) Rip

  • he was not just a man but a sweet loving man R.I.P nicholas courtney he will be missed and doctor who and shackferth were big part in his live

  • Loved the phone call in the season finale. The thing is, I could actually see the ol' man sitting with a brandy by an empty seat while talikng to the nurse about the Doctor, hoping he would drop by. This too is an excellent tribute. I'm not sure how many of those views are mine, but there are quite a few. R.I.P.Mr. Courtney.

  • Destoyer: Can this world do no better than you as their champion?

Brigadier: Probably. I just do the best I can

  • @melina001a "Probably. I just do the best I can." That's the line that always gives me chills. THAT sums up the character of The Brigadier far better than any other line could. :)

  • Greyhound to trap one, I think it's time to head out,....

    R.I.P Nicholas Courtney

Thanks for all the great entertainment!

  • The Brig was more then a companion, more then a best friend. I'd go so far as to say he was the Doctor's brother. He will be missed but he will never be forgotten.

  • Best line, I'm pretty sure that's Cromer!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @johnhamilton08 Calling the Brig a "companion" of the Dr's would make the Brig an "assistant" to the Dr, & that just seems an inaccurate perspective. If anything, the Dr is an assistant to UNIT and the Brig. This is why it just seems wrong to call the Brig a "companion".

This viewpoint in no way diminishes the importance of UNIT & the Brig in DW. The Pertwee-era UNIT family years Seasons 7-to-13, rate as some of the finest, and most important seasons in DW history!

  • Amazing...always amazing.

  • such a fantastic moving tribute to the brig. he will be sorely missed indeed. what a perfect song choice.

  • Three people dislike this. THREE PEOPLE! No true Doctor Who fan young or old would dislike such a touching tribute to the greatest character in the shows history. And bravo to the Moff for his own touching tribute to the Brig. Although some of his work is complicated and confusing it was a moment that will live in Doctor Who history.

  • What episodes were 2:11-2:14?

  • I think SM handled the Brig's passing brilliantly, and I love the fact that it was that event that made the Doctor realize that he did, in fact, have to stop running and face his death.

    Rest in peace, Nicholas Courtney.

  • Brilliant tribute in Doctor Who last night...

"He made us pour another brandy in case you came round one of these days..."

  • I cried in the new episode where the doctor got a call about Brig, then i go on youtube and find out hes REALLY dead and now im in floods of tears. :'( Rip Brig<3

  • I got a bid sad in the last episode of doctor who when they mentioned Brig :(

  • I was glad that the Brigadier got mentioned in the latest episode. He was awesome.

  • So glad tonights episode is dedicated to The Brig.

  • I barely managed to hold it together during this video, but that final line of "Now I've hung up my uniform for good" got me bubbling.

A Magnificant tribute to a truly brilliant man. My compliments.

  • without characters like the brig and sarah jane there would be no dr who.Wheres he tribute on screen?

  • @unclechec They were saving the best for last.

  • The three people who disliked this video are not doctor who fans. RIP Nicholas

  • "I just do the best i can"

  • if this video doesnt bring tears to your eyes your not human :(

  • Loved This Video

  • Thumbs up if you think this and Tears for Sarah-Jane should be included on the DVD release of Terror of the Zygons

  • @seph1r0th400 They should put them on Invasion of the Dinosaurs in the UNIT Box

  • @BigDoctorWhoFan I said TotZ because that was their final story together in the classic series.

  • @seph1r0th400 Sorry, forgot about that.

  • @BigDoctorWhoFan

...Well not counting reprisals int 'The Five Doctors'...It was their last as regulars

  • @seph1r0th400 There aren't enough thumbs on the internet to express what a good idea this is.

  • @seph1r0th400 Doing a thumbs up is not enough. If you go to the right conventions, i.e. um... the DWAS showing of Pertwee's Dinosaur episode later this month at Riverside Studios in London, you could always speak to those working on the DVD releases to see what could be done.

  • @seph1r0th400 On a double DVD no less...

  • This video was wonderful. Thank you so much for making it, Babel. Nicholas Courtney was an amazing man and actor. He was THE Doctor Who companion. It was really hard NOT to love him. We'll never forget you, Brigadier.

  • "Now I've hung up my uniform-for good" combined with his date of death.... (sob)

  • The Brigadier was nowhere near perfect, but it's impossible not to love him.

Nicholas Courtney, as I hear, in person, was a true gentleman.

    Wonderful chap!

  • I have a lump in my throat, was listening to him on Zagreus and Minuet in Hell on Big Finish and he was brilliant on them. RIP dear Brigidier

  • @lilmissglentoran He is also in The Spectre of Lanyon Moor. And the warmth with which the Sixth Doctor greets him makes his passing all the more mournful.

  • Terror of The Zygons, is FINALLY due for DVD release in 2012. It is one of my favorite stories, albeit a bittersweet favorite, as it is the final appearance of the Pertwee-era Unit Team of the Brig, Benson & Company.

TOTZ is a very special story that successfully combines elements of the Letts-Dicks era with the Hinchcliffe-Holmes production team.

It is nice that the Brig is onscreen as the scene fades to credits. The genuine end of an era. The loss always hits, as much as I enjoy TOTZ.

  • You cannot not love the brig. The way he approached mordred.

"You, extremely powerful knight from another dimension who's still in his prime. You're my bitch now."

    Then, later in the serial.

"You, extremely powerful monster from another dimension with magic far beyond my understanding. You're my bitch now."

Anything the doctor did not utterly own, the brigadier owned, just as epically.

    R.I.P Nicholas courtney

  • @otisshinigami Get off my world!

    Awesome :D

  • @otisshinigami Great Britan and The Untied States have not had good leadership for a very long time. If the U.K found a real life Brigadier Allistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart they could have a Prime Minister they could finally br proud of !

  • That was really nice.

  • A wonderful tribute to a truly wonderful man. He was beloved by fans across the world. Its a shame that he never appeared in Nu Who. I was once due to go to a convention he was speaking, but illness prevented me from going. I'll always regret never getting the chance to him.

    "Wonderful chap."

One question though. The clip at 03:20 - what is it from?

  • @CGren123 That is from the documentary "More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS." It wasproduced by the Beeb in observance of the Doctor's 30th anniversary. It was available on VHS through BBC Video but I am afraid it is out of print.

  • i was watching "planet of the spiders" the other day and it dawned on me that all 3 regulars have now passed away., so sad

  • @drwhotvwam As for UNIT itself there is still Sa'nt Benton and Cpt. Yates still going, i'd love to see them make a one off appearance before it too late...

  • @Badgerbitesback yeah that would be cool :)

  • Beautiful tribute. Wow, it's still hard for me to listen to this song without getting emotional. I first heard it (and played it over and over again) not long after I lost my dog and one of my cat's in the same month.

  • I have tears in my eyes.

  • A well deserved Tribute

  • Fantastic. Very moving

  • Oh Brigadier splendid chap you were. I guarantee you that the Doctor's two hearts have broken

  • This is an excellent, touching and emotional tribute. RIP Nick

  • i cant believe he's gone

  • I can't thank you enough for this special video Stuart. Beautiful.

  • Beautifully put together and deeply moving. I continue to be deeply impressed and touched by your work!

May i recommend An Hour With John Pertwee on the BBC Iplayer if you've not listened to it already.

It contains a wonderful little section about the John Pertwee's doctor, Patrick Troughton, and a wonderful little bit about the alternate (evil) brigadier scene.

  • That was truly a beautiful tribute to the man. There is something very piteous about seeing someone over a space of forty years, from a young man to an old man. I used to think the Brigidier was very beautiful when I was younger, especially in the Pertwee era... and I'd never seen the Sarah Jane episode with him in. He aged with such dignity. And to see my two child hood heroes together, after they both died so recently, was very moving. Thank you for this.

  • That is such a lovely tribute, brought back so many happy memories and does the Brigadier proud bless him. Thankyou so much for sharing very well done.

  • I am annoyed with the BBC, they didn't give the Brigadier a tribute like they did with Elisabeth Sladen, I know she deserved it, but what about the Brigadier, all the doctors he served with, he deserved a mention, shame on the BBC.

  • @heat000 I have to agree with you whole heartedly, tehy both were wonderful characters and deserved recognition....

  • @heat000

    Agreed.

  • ...But you still have...

    Brig: Sarah-Jane Smith

Once a happy note, now an aboslute tear-jerker

  • he's just like the normal man. But he isn't. Brigadier is alot better then most of the Doctor's companions.

  • If only the bbc had stopped explaining Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewarts absence as "stranded in peru" and just got the actor in for an episode of the new series. Now all we've got for recent appearances in character is one story from Sarah Jane Smith Adventures.

  • was watching inferno last night, was cryig my eyes out. hell be missed a lot :'(

  • that last scene wheich episode is it from, the one where he's stood all alone at the end?

  • 3:10 and 3:13 which episode?

  • @CYBERDOODY infero eps 5 -7 i think

  • @CYBERDOODY Actually "The Ambassadors of Death" Ep 1

  • I just realized...this video immortalizes the deaths of all three DW stars that have passed...Nicholas Courtney, Elisabeth Sladen (at 1:16) and Roy Skelton (at 1:30). Ironic since the latter two hadn't yet passed when this video was made. May they rest in peace. :'(

  • @FlowerGirl9016 correction: 1:37 for Roy Skelton, since he was the original voice of the Daleks...

  • This is just wonderful. Such an excellent tribute. Spot on. It makes me sad each time. I hate saying goodbye to all these wonderful Doctor Who people. Thankyou BabelColour!!!

  • I may have only seen the Brigadier on television once (in 'The Sarah Jane Adventures') but I fell in love with him and this tribute just shows how much of a legend he was. He will be greatly missed. RIP Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart.

  • @MasterKasterborous As I've said to so many fans of the "new series" - there are piles of episodes of the old series available on Netflix, just waiting to be enjoyed and loved by the new generation of fans. Do yourself a favor, and watch them! See the old companions, back when they were young. Meet the Doctor in his earlier incarnations, and see why the series lasted for so long.

  • @harbqll I have seen a lot of the classic series episodes. I own at least 100 old episodes but as I was born in the 90's I never saw any of the Brigadier's episodes on television on its original broadcast. I love the Brig and it is so sad that such a legend has died and that he can't make one final appearance in Doctor Who. For me I still have loads of adventures still to see but I hope that one day 'The Web Of Fear' might be found and then for many people that would be a new episode.

  • @MasterKasterborous Hearing that gives me hope for today's youth. Some of my friend's kids will only watch the new show.

  • Moving tribute to a great man; My eyes are watering

  • Roy Skelton has gone now. Three Doctor Who greats have been lost. :`(

  • "Chap with the wings there, Five rounds Rapid!"

  • i watch this once a week and still it makes me cry yes a big strong man crying and proud of it!!! i said right at the start you will do great and u ain't proven me wrong 200 thumbs up for Mr Babel boys and girls

  • I loved the line, "I just do the best I can." That's all anyone can ask of you Brigadier and, considering the circumstances, you performed marvelously. Here's hoping the next life finds you and Doctors 2 and 3 fighting side by side once more. Five rounds rapid sir.

  • They should release a DVD Boxset of all the Brigadier episodes.

  • @CrimsonHawkArts That would cover seasons 7, 8, 9, 10, most of 11, 12, 13, and a few scattered episodes before and after the UNIT years.

  • could you please tell me the name of the song and artist

  • @jacker457 My Immortal by Gregorian.

  • Comment removed

  • I met this great man at Longleat many years ago as a small boy and I remember as he signed my autograph I said his immortal line "5 rounds rapid" to which he replied;

"Thats right! Five rounds rapid!" wonderfull man and the embodiment of Dr who companions and lovely man in real life. Fitting tribute Salute to Nick the Brigadier!

  • A truly excellent tribute, Sir. I was once due to go to a convention he was attending, but because of illness, I was forced to cancel. I was so disappointed, because he was the man I wanted to see. Now I'll forerver regret that I never got that chance.

As usual, brilliant closing line. My hat is off to you.

  • Good tribute thanks for sharing

  • An excellent tribute.

The Brigadier is one of the most memorable characters in Dr Who.

And I learnt from this video that my home town got mentioned (at 2:51).

  • I've said this before He'll be missed, and somewhere, out there, The Doctor just got lonelier... "Honours Up, Five Rounds Rapid * Salute* Dismissed"

  • Marvelous.

  • Come on people... Stiff upper lip and all that. For the Brig.

  • This may be a slightly morbid thought, but Katy Manning is the only major Pertwee-era actor left... R.I.P. Pertwee, Delgado, Courtney, and Sladen.

  • @bigfatcarp93 Erm.... no she's not. There's still Caroline John, who played the Third Doctor's first Companion, Elizabeth Shaw.

  • @CGren123 I know about her, I wasn't counting her as "major" enough. I also didn't count John Levene or the guy who played Cap. Yates.

  • @bigfatcarp93 I hope this doesn't come off as snobby or rude, but can I ask why? I can understand not counting Richard Franklin or John Levene, but Caroline John was his Companion.

  • @CGren123 Well, mainly number of stories. Caroline had four, Katy had fifteen, and Liz had... well, five with Pertwee, but numerous more after that. Plus, I think Liz Shaw just doesn't stick with people like Jo and Sarah did. No offence to the actress, of course. And no, you didn't come off as snobby or rude ;)
