Jimmy is interesting because he was really Bread's country singer. I like his version of "It Don't Matter to Me" because I think of it as Bread's "Glen Campbell song" -- if you played that and "Wichita Lineman" back to back they would sound like the same writer wrote both. A good country singer sounds like he has the dust of the road in his voice. James has a little of that, it's kind of a country-pop voice, cleaned up a bit, but the gravel is still in his tenor. Nice harnomies here. Thanx!
This is just a copy - even of David's arrangement of his song. Jimmy had a good voice, but there is no emotion in his rendering. David's is far superior.
Perhaps that is true of this particular rendering, but Jimmy was capable of just as much or more emotion than Gates. I doubt that this casual version, in this setting, was intended to compete with the fully arranged, emotional original.
Couldn't agree with you more on this, LiteOfYourMind. Jimmy had an amazing, soulful and tender side to his vocals. David's voice was excellent - that goes without saying, of course. But Jimmy's voice was equally so, just a bit deeper, a tad less syrupy, but definitely, without question, equally as emotive and evocative, stirring and soulful.
Although I'm a huge Bread fan I have The Remingtons' recording of this song & actually like it better than Bread's. With Jimmy singing the lead, who wouldn't? He's was & will always be my main Bread man :-) Thanks k1fjh for posting all your videos from The Remingtons' concert, I love hearing their beautiful harmonies & wish I could have been there in person.
I love his versions on the CD he did of the Bread songs, which were mostly sung by David. He had great range and I always called him the "fire and ice" vocalist - he could do ballads or rockers with equal passion.
@Paducahdy - I totally agree with you. The evidence is there, when you listen to the various Bread songs Gates is great don't get me wrong, but Griffins singing is absolute perfection.
I read once that Griffin doing this song was an attempt to reconnect with Gates when they had become estranged..I've been looking for this version of the song for a long time..THANKS
I think Jimmy showed David the respect that he would wish for - their harmonies were great together - the sum being greater than the individual parts.
sounds good but the people need to shut the FUCK up!!! that's all : )

Great version, and in the original key! David Gates had dropped it down a whole step by this time, but James's voice had lost nothing to age.

Judging by the yelling beerheads in the audience, I guess all US rednecks are not l located in the south.

What a wonderful musician is James Griffin. In a nice little trio here too. Full marks!

Looks like Jimmy is playing without a capo on the usual 5th or 7th fret for this song - I bet he's playing A, E D.

If you like the country bent, listen to Bread do "Make It By Yourself" - it's a great song that has definite country overtones.

Jimmy was capable of just as much or more emotion than Gates? There's no question, in my opinion Jimmy was much more expressive than Gates.

Jimmy had such a beautiful voice. He sings so much better than Gates ever could or ever will.
