I'm sure he went through a very rough patch earlier in life because that eats away at your self-esteem. If he had to go through the medication called Acutane to get rid of it, it's even worse because for a lot of people it has some very dangerous and life restrictive side effects.

I'm sure you meant no harm but I'm sure he wants that part of his life to be left in the past, so as a good advice when you see someone with facial scars possibly left by acne don't bother asking, it's not something anyone would want to talk about.
