  • Do you have the whole show somewhere? This is outstanding.

  • i wouldn't call ss j a legend..lol

  • Was that the fabulous, one and only, Al Berger on bass?

  • Billy Rush!

  • Fri 21st Oct Southside will be playing a gig in Shepherds Bush London . Be there or miss one of he unsung greats!

  • stan helsing!!!

  • Sorry Bruce..

Johnny is the 'BOSS" in this song!

    His vocals are far superior!

  • Only you, and maybe Simon Cowle.... could make that once in a lifetime experience a judging contest.

They were both smokin'... without Bruce, it would just be Southside having another great night.

I have seen him a few times, he is always great. But the two of them together, takes a flawless Southside performance to another level. And I'm sure it would be the same in reverse, Southside coming out onstage at a Springsteen show. Pure magic.

  • this brings me to the "whatever happened to" Alan Berg on Bass, Steve Becker on Drums Billy Rush lead guitar, Rick Gazda trumpet...

  • Southside REALLY DIDN"T want to go home!

  • No not a Coffee Break Concert. It was a late Agora show. Bruce played earlier (8 p.m. show) at The Richfield Coliseum, 40 min. south of Cleveland. Southside joined him for The Fever at his show. I left the Bruce show during the last encore and raced to Cleveland to see Southside. We parked and ran to The Agora, Bruce and Steve were just getting out of a car in front of The Agora! Southside started about 11:30 p.m., Bruce joined in for 3 songs late. Fantastic! Fever twice in one night!

  • Was This a WMMS Coffee Break Concert...

  • why is there no video available of the springsteen show that took place earlier this evening :(....same venue (Agora) and a show for the ages

  • Southside is very gracious taking the back seat - love them both - love Southside more!

  • Bruce and Southside Johnny both are amazing here ! I wish I could live this concert ! Thanks for uploading and sharing. ;)

  • I was at this concert too! What a surprise, when Bruce came on stage. Definitely the most memorable Agora concert for me. What's truly bizarre now, however, is that I think I even caught a glimpse of myself in the audience, at the end! Thanks for posting!

  • Man, how could we let hollywood-stuff take over...

  • The best version ever

  • Thats a shame that back in the late 70s, the Jersey Shore was known for awesome music but now its known for fake tanned trashy guidos

  • @DominoRyder LOL...it's all over it seems...

  • rip kevin kavanaugh who passed away today...:+(...another musical talent gone way too soon.

  • Oh God, how I remember being in clubs when Southside Johnny performed ... but I was never fortunate enough to be there when Bruce showed up. Southside is still such an amazing band. Geez, I must be old. I remember seeing them play at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, NJ in the 70's. I don't remember too much of that night (it was the 70's, after all), but I do remember having a fantastic time, dancing on the bleachers of the gymnasium with all my stoned out friends. Pure bliss.

  • Sweet!

  • I was at this show! In fact, on the cover of a book, "Rock and Roll Memories in Cleveland" there is a picture of my friends and I waiting in line to get in that evening! We had decided to see Southside because we'd seen Bruce a few months earlier. What no one knew was that Springsteen had his limo bring him to the Agora after his Cleveland Coliseum show ended. WE WENT NUTS when Bruce walked onstage. Absolutely nuts. What a great evening that turned out to be. Classic!!!

  • Where are the drum machines, synthesizers and sequencers? Oh, I get it. This is real music.

  • could you imagine being there... that concert didnt start till 11 pm after bruces show in cleveland ended... he drives over along with god knows how many fans to get on stage and keep on going... wow what amazing shows those would have been to see

  • could you only imagine being there... bruce gets off stage in cleveland and drives over to the agora to get on stage with southside johnny... wow had to be amazing

  • Freekin' 70's were great, weren't they? "Whatever happened to you and I?" (Baby, baby, baby ....)

  • I was at this show -AMAZING!! Those Jersey boys sure can perform!!

  • I saw SSJ and the Asbury Jukes at the Lawrence Opera House in Lawrence Kansas in the fall of 1979. It's still one of the five best shows of all time. I've seen shows all over th US and Europe.

  • It was the best of times; it was the... friggin' best of times.

  • Steve Van Zandt's a musical genius here, beautiful song

  • Rock On Southside! Still the best song ever!!!!

  • Fab - just fab :)

  • Damn, this brings back memories. I used to go down the the old Agora all the time back in the day. Hell, I might be in this crowd somewhere. Thanks for posting...awesome!!

  • Just a few words: great rock!

  • Go home? They'd have to peel me off the.ceiling first...sure

  • The greatest part of this performance is that both Southside and Bruce are having more fun than anybody else in the room. Guitarist behind SSJ (Gary Tallent??) is loving the moment, too.

  • Does it get any better?!

  • Have a rockin' New Years Southside!!!!

  • you sure that isn't trent razor?

  • why don't they have that kind of footage of springsteen's concert from the agora club in 78' :(

  • @MJ2327 I think he does. Its in a vault somewhere in the swamps of Jersey.

  • What a stunning song

  • To be fair to the Boss here, Bruce had just come out to assist SS at the tail end of the show. Although I believe Little Steven wrote this one, Bruce wrote a majority of the material for SSJ first 3 albums. It was SSJ show and Bruce was going to be the perfect set up guy. Great stuff, great post.

  • Southside is more into the music than Bruce. Bruce is NOT sweating (dead give away) Therefore, I am more into Southside in this one.

  • Neither do I after seeing this...NEW JERSEY IS KNOWN FOR THE GREATEST TALENT...THE GREATS COME FROM NJ...SOME HATE IT HERE....WE LIVE FOR THESE PEOPLE TO ENTERTAIN US...

  • Wild!! Wild!!! Wild in the Streets!!!! Good rendition...Southside Johnny and Bruce Springsteen!!!!

    REACH FOR THE STARS!!!!

  • Reach Up AND Touch THE SKY!!

  • LOVE IT, This just took me back to Jersey and seeing Southside at Stone Pony, Capital Theater...GREAT TIMES< GREAT MUSIC!!!

  • excellent song, woo hoo :-)

  • amazing! great song, great singers...

  • southside is the better singer but bruce is still great

  • Comment removed

  • I love southside. I remember seeing him so this song. He's the best! This is so funny, he looks drunk. hahaha I love him.

  • I looooove this. Its soooo funny. I remember being at his concerts. He's the best. This one is funny. You can tell he's drunk or something hahaha but still great

  • Narkomani :D

  • Whole lotta sweat happenin' right there.

  • Johnny sounds better than Bruce..

    Thats life!

  • The Boss wishes he was Southside

  • Saw Southside and the Jukes twice during the 1978 tour. They are just as awesome as I remember. Great to see Billy Rush and Michael Burger. Who is that other guy on guitar?

  • Fantastic. Love to watch these two legends perform together. Thanks for the post.

  • fcukin brilliant excellent track

  • I love the Jersey Shore scene of music. I'm only 19 and can only hope to bring this style of music back. It reminds me a lot of Bruce's music. Just there style is alike, fun music.. JUst damn good rock. I love it!

  • same here man. I'm just 17 and can't stand any of this cookie-cutter crap that's out there today. We need more well thought out music.

  • @rloebe34

Bruce did write this song as well.

  • @rloebe34

Actually it is a Springsteen-inspired Van Zandt song

  • Man ... I was lucky enough to hang out in Asbury Park in the late 70s ... back when Jon Bon Jovi was in the audience with me at the Stone Pony and the Fast Lane taking in Bruce and Southside ... what an incredible time.

  • awesome - post to ncarolinaluv if you love bruce and southside together -- and know the lyrics to this -- thanks!!!

  • I've never seen /heard this beore but I'll keep it in my favourites. I'll grow on me.

  • Wonder if I can see them in Wisconsin.

  • cute Hockey Man!

  • hot hockey girl!

  • What a band!

This was during the late '70's disco saga and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes weren't going to be poisoned by that crap!

  • Great stuff.

Only discovered Johnny S. two years back and then lucky enough to be in the US in September 2006 when he played the Blues Club in Newport, Rhode Island on the day before Labor Monday. FANTASTIC concert and a night my wife and I will never forget cos' he rocked from 10pm until 1am....great memories!

  • I'll say it again, great band.

  • Excellent. Bruce, Johnny Lyon, Billy Rush, Labamba, Eddie Manion .. just excellent.

  • It would be nice if the max weinberg 7 went back to this instead of the pulp they play now.

  • haha, u can tell johnny is fucked up in this video, lol, but he still did a great job..

  • Nice to see these Jersey boys together. Wish I'd been there! Good Luck to all!

  • ooh.. they are good!!! im excited! on the sixteenth of feb. in like two weeks im playing violin in their concert!!!!

  • Im 21 and grew up in Akron, OH. I have heard many bruce stories from my parents and finaly got to go this summer to see him at the Q. I would give anything to see him at this time though. Bruce's concert for wmms in 78 at the agora is one of the best things I have ever heard.

  • Hey bro,... I'm 21 also... u born in '86 right? Keep the love for the old music.. we are 1'in a million... that reminds me.. listen to Guns'N'Roses One Ín A Million... it will touch your heart... neways.. Stay with the classic rock.. it's the only music that will stand the test of time... ROCK ON BRO!!!!

  • WPLJ broadcast Southside Johnny from the Convention Hall in Asbury Park one night I think it was about the late 70`s.

That was a classic night that I wish we could see and hear again.

  • WMMS made Johny. On 30AUG78 at the Agora. Kid

  • The Agora. The Real Music. What great times! JJ

  • Yeah, I kind of thought Johnny was a little tipsy. Haha, that's alright though, he didn't forget any words! In the beginning Johnny is trying to get Bruce to do something...I can't lip read very well though. Anyway, really really cool video!

  • lol, he was prolly more then tipsy.. guys like him can get any chemical they want..its funny a posted a comment similar before I saw your..

  • He was a great artist on a third curtain call in this video. Grow up. The Jukes were awesome and Johnny was the bandleader. Lyon always had a somewhat spastic physical style but his vocals were always world class.

  • these guys could play all night

  • I was at this show. It was awsome! I remember it like this: Johnny was scheduled to play the the Agora, Springsteen then gets his gig set up at the the same nighe half way to Akron, then Johnny changes the start time of his show to 11:00 PM. So we figure ah-ha. We go to the Springsteen show, hustle downtown to the Southside show and it was just great. Where the heck did you get the video? Great quality.

  • Back in teh day, if you didn'td play the Agora and get on rotation on WMMS, you couldn't break out east of the Mississippi. We broke, Bowie, Cheap Trick, Meatloaf, Southside Johnny, Bruce and a lot more. I did a lot of shows, in that room, and that was what rock and roll was supposed to be like. Now, radio is a satellite pushing the same tripe over 1,000 cities and some guy who reads the forecast. You want rock and roll back? Support DeeJay programmed radio.

  • Philly broke Springsteen WMMR

  • yeah true, but wmms in the cleve did too....as you see on this video.

  • You are right about the Agora. Spent many a night there. Remember the Wednesday afternoon 'Coffee Break' concerts WMMS put on? I also saw Lou Reed, Dire Straits,& Peter Frampton there in addition to seeing the Rasberries on Sunday nights doing their Beatles rendition before they made it. JJ

  • Regardless of who learned what from who, these guys are awesome and SSJ(though slightly wasted here) and Bruce are rock icons-love the video.

  • SSJ is wasted here

  • While not a Jon Bon Jovi fan, you have to give him credit for surviving - but Southside is the real deal - you can have Spruce - nothing like the wall of sound and energy of a Southside show!

  • why you keep insulting Jon Bon Jovi? he always admire and tribute these 2 , especially Jonny...

and btw... whom of these wrote a lyric like "dry county" or "something to belive in"??

  • This is when the music scene was fun and innovative..

  • bon jovi is similar to the dump i just took a moment ago

  • ss johnny is good, but he can't hold a candle to Bruce

  • Listen, Boys and Girls ... I grew up with Jon Bon Jovi when he was cutting his teeth on Southside and Bruce ... he followed it like a road map ... if he doesn't say he owes his career to these guys he's lying ... or fooling himself.

    - Mike

  • You can see where didi JBJ steal his "tricks" from. :§)

And why is Bon Jovi the best band in the world.Cos they grew up listening to these two rock n roll heroes!

  • Jesus Christ. Don't even mention Jon Bon Jovi when you're talking about Southside Johnny. Johnny is the real deal. Bon Jovi is a half-talent wanna be.

  • Simply amazing!!!!!!

    Great performance......

  • Thank you to whoever cleaned up this video! Love it!

  • WHOO HOO! FIVE stars for THIS one! A a tip of the O'Toole hat to Ed Kaz for sending me here!!

  • Proud to be from New Jersey!

  • ONCE AGAIN... CLEVELAND ROCKED

  • Love it.

    They are so much fun!

Southside Johnny has a great voice.

  • Masterpiece. 2 of the greatest performers sharing the same stage. There is some magic in the air.

  • I agree--a great live performance in an intimate atmosphere. But if I were Johnny, I wouldn't do a duet with Bruce because he performs Johnny's song better than Johnny.

  • Got it on Altercation also Rockin'

  • Also got linked from Alterman...good stuff

  • Thanks for the link, Eric Alterman...this is awesome

  • This is what a good gig should be like. Hot, sweaty, no room, lot's of atmosphere. One of the best live performers ever, and I'm not talking about Bruce. Even nowadays, if you get the chance, put your soul shoes on and go and see Southside Johnny.
