Only you, and maybe Simon Cowle.... could make that once in a lifetime experience a judging contest.
They were both smokin'... without Bruce, it would just be Southside having another great night.
I have seen him a few times, he is always great. But the two of them together, takes a flawless Southside performance to another level. And I'm sure it would be the same in reverse, Southside coming out onstage at a Springsteen show. Pure magic.
No not a Coffee Break Concert. It was a late Agora show. Bruce played earlier (8 p.m. show) at The Richfield Coliseum, 40 min. south of Cleveland. Southside joined him for The Fever at his show. I left the Bruce show during the last encore and raced to Cleveland to see Southside. We parked and ran to The Agora, Bruce and Steve were just getting out of a car in front of The Agora! Southside started about 11:30 p.m., Bruce joined in for 3 songs late. Fantastic! Fever twice in one night!
I was at this concert too! What a surprise, when Bruce came on stage. Definitely the most memorable Agora concert for me. What's truly bizarre now, however, is that I think I even caught a glimpse of myself in the audience, at the end! Thanks for posting!
Oh God, how I remember being in clubs when Southside Johnny performed ... but I was never fortunate enough to be there when Bruce showed up. Southside is still such an amazing band. Geez, I must be old. I remember seeing them play at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, NJ in the 70's. I don't remember too much of that night (it was the 70's, after all), but I do remember having a fantastic time, dancing on the bleachers of the gymnasium with all my stoned out friends. Pure bliss.

I was at this show! In fact, on the cover of a book, "Rock and Roll Memories in Cleveland" there is a picture of my friends and I waiting in line to get in that evening! We had decided to see Southside because we'd seen Bruce a few months earlier. What no one knew was that Springsteen had his limo bring him to the Agora after his Cleveland Coliseum show ended. WE WENT NUTS when Bruce walked onstage. Absolutely nuts. What a great evening that turned out to be. Classic!!!
could you imagine being there... that concert didnt start till 11 pm after bruces show in cleveland ended... he drives over along with god knows how many fans to get on stage and keep on going... wow what amazing shows those would have been to see
could you only imagine being there... bruce gets off stage in cleveland and drives over to the agora to get on stage with southside johnny... wow had to be amazing
I saw SSJ and the Asbury Jukes at the Lawrence Opera House in Lawrence Kansas in the fall of 1979. It's still one of the five best shows of all time. I've seen shows all over th US and Europe.
Damn, this brings back memories. I used to go down the the old Agora all the time back in the day. Hell, I might be in this crowd somewhere. Thanks for posting...awesome!!
The greatest part of this performance is that both Southside and Bruce are having more fun than anybody else in the room. Guitarist behind SSJ (Gary Tallent??) is loving the moment, too.
To be fair to the Boss here, Bruce had just come out to assist SS at the tail end of the show. Although I believe Little Steven wrote this one, Bruce wrote a majority of the material for SSJ first 3 albums. It was SSJ show and Bruce was going to be the perfect set up guy. Great stuff, great post.
Neither do I after seeing this...NEW JERSEY IS KNOWN FOR THE GREATEST TALENT...THE GREATS COME FROM NJ...SOME HATE IT HERE....WE LIVE FOR THESE PEOPLE TO ENTERTAIN US...

I looooove this. Its soooo funny. I remember being at his concerts. He's the best. This one is funny. You can tell he's drunk or something hahaha but still great
Saw Southside and the Jukes twice during the 1978 tour. They are just as awesome as I remember. Great to see Billy Rush and Michael Burger. Who is that other guy on guitar?
I love the Jersey Shore scene of music. I'm only 19 and can only hope to bring this style of music back. It reminds me a lot of Bruce's music. Just there style is alike, fun music.. JUst damn good rock. I love it!
Man ... I was lucky enough to hang out in Asbury Park in the late 70s ... back when Jon Bon Jovi was in the audience with me at the Stone Pony and the Fast Lane taking in Bruce and Southside ... what an incredible time.
Only discovered Johnny S. two years back and then lucky enough to be in the US in September 2006 when he played the Blues Club in Newport, Rhode Island on the day before Labor Monday. FANTASTIC concert and a night my wife and I will never forget cos' he rocked from 10pm until 1am....great memories!
Im 21 and grew up in Akron, OH. I have heard many bruce stories from my parents and finaly got to go this summer to see him at the Q. I would give anything to see him at this time though. Bruce's concert for wmms in 78 at the agora is one of the best things I have ever heard.

Yeah, I kind of thought Johnny was a little tipsy. Haha, that's alright though, he didn't forget any words! In the beginning Johnny is trying to get Bruce to do something...I can't lip read very well though. Anyway, really really cool video!
He was a great artist on a third curtain call in this video. Grow up. The Jukes were awesome and Johnny was the bandleader. Lyon always had a somewhat spastic physical style but his vocals were always world class.
I was at this show. It was awsome! I remember it like this: Johnny was scheduled to play the the Agora, Springsteen then gets his gig set up at the the same nighe half way to Akron, then Johnny changes the start time of his show to 11:00 PM. So we figure ah-ha. We go to the Springsteen show, hustle downtown to the Southside show and it was just great. Where the heck did you get the video? Great quality.
Back in teh day, if you didn'td play the Agora and get on rotation on WMMS, you couldn't break out east of the Mississippi. You are right about the Agora. Spent many a night there. Remember the Wednesday afternoon 'Coffee Break' concerts WMMS put on? I also saw Lou Reed, Dire Straits,& Peter Frampton there in addition to seeing the Rasberries on Sunday nights doing their Beatles rendition before they made it. JJ
While not a Jon Bon Jovi fan, you have to give him credit for surviving - but Southside is the real deal - you can have Spruce - nothing like the wall of sound and energy of a Southside show!
