Why is it that animes always seem to contain completely nonsensical catchphrases in impossibly bad english? This "poem" makes no sense at all. Since when does a sword have a bone in it, for a start?

And Hellsing ( the manga, not the anime, but no doubt the OVA also when it comes out) has "The Bird of Hermes is my name" etc etc... which ALSO makes no bloody sense. There's no way Vlad Tepes would have said that. Why would ANYONE say that?

The bad English is a really cool thing in Japan, don't ask why they think it's cool, it just is for them. But the ''poem'' here actually makes sense if you read the novel. Archers body(this is only learned in heavans feel) turns his body into swords to compensate for injuries he receives, thus he is the ''bone'' of his sword. His body is made of steel because it turns his flesh into swords, his blood is fire from the immense pain and mental winds that he must endure.

If you take the movie as a standalone (meaning without playing the game) then its natural that you're gonna be disappointed. There's just no way they gonna be able to put 50+ hours of text into a 2 hour movie. You're only suppose to watch the movie to see the action scenes animated but sadly some of the battles were more exciting in the game.

All in all, I'd say that the movie will use about the third of actual playtime, which taken into account the roughly 18 to 21 hours a ROUTE, and you have what, six to seven hours to compress into the 'reel'.

Hence, the reason why Shirou won was because Gilgy could not use projectile weaponry (his preferred mode of combat) to his advantage, because for every weapon he tried to fire at Shirou, Shirou would hurl the exact same weapon back at him. This reduced Shirou and Gilgy to a swordfight, in which Shirou has the upper hand (as Shirou's pure swordsmanship exceeds Gilgy's. This was not explained in the movie; instead the movie cut straight to the swordfight. Is this clear enough for you?

@sisterlynnmarie Pretty much all correct except you left out why Shirou's swordsmanship exceeds Gilgamesh which is because when he projects a sword he copies all of the heroes techniques related to that sword as well as the speed and strength needed to use those techniques. Gilgamesh knows jack all about most the weapons in GoB and certainly can't use the majority of their abilities which is why Shirou's weapons are "superior" to his despite being statistically inferior.

Also, after Shirou unleashes UBW, he does not engage in a pure swordfight with Gilgy. Instead, Gilgy summons a sword from his Gate and Shirou summons the exact same sword and they hurl the swords at each other, causing both to explode. This happens for quite some time before Shirou closes in on Gilgy.

@Skiddou You don't need to watch the anime to understand the film, in fact the anime was a pretty poor adaptation of the VN. Reading the VN is extremely important if you want to actually understand the film. Simply watching the anime won't make you understand UBW. UBW is actually a very deep story far deeper than the Fate route which the anime is mostly based on. Almost every section of shirou's character has symbolism in it and Shirou;s fight with Archer transcends that of a physical battle.

@Darkrise714 Actually the movie is already out, and I'd say its something of a failure. Its probably completely awful if you haven't watched the TV show or played the V.N., but even if you have it changes things that didn't need changing, and it removes 95% of the plot in order to fit in every single fight scene. Hell even Shiro vs. Archer was handled badly compared to its discription in the V.N. That said, most of the action is enjoyable, and Saber is awesome every time she gets to fight.

@bakura0 Gilgamesh is the historical king of Babylon, and basically the first "hero" in the history. I can't remember his exact legend, but I know it involves him fighting a god, befriending his own arch rival, and discovering immortality...but lost it at the last second.

Archer is Shiro Emiya. He eventually became a hero due to his ideal of saving everyone, but it went horribly wrong and all he ever does is kill people (the fewest possible). If you want a better info dump check wikipedia.

No mentions of how he hates his master, all the teasing towards Rin about how he wants her to be his master, and no poking at Saber and Shirou and they're ideals.

That said, I'll say more anyway. It's the only one where Shirou really becomes a bona fide badass. In Heaven's Feel and Fate he's just using other people's power, but goddamn if he doesn't just radiate awesome in UBW.

I mean seriously, there was like no Archer in HF and very little in Fate. I mean, Fate had a beautiful and tragic story, and Heaven's Feel had enough Rider to please me, but you just can't beat UBW!
