My school's jazz band has been working on this tune for a while. It sounded great, and we were gonna perform it for a big public event. Day of performance, we cancel due to bad weather (outdoors event). I was like D: Then tornadoes came later that day all across my state (missed where I live). Then I was like 'okey dokey'.
@SatchmoSings Hi, very happy to see you again! A few months back I did reply to you but it would not go through. I don't know why that was. I guess at 87 new things sometimes just get lost in the dark area of my brains. Thanks for the vidio. Happy New year to you, stay well, keep in touch
This is truly great music! I grew up listening to this type of music but not in the 40s! Mom and Dad played it around the house while I was growing up in the 60s. I just can't get enough!
@347693333 Dude Max is sick from your school! He can play and solo on like every instrument! He is definitely a prodigy, though he probably works hard as well.
My high school jazz band played this song this year at the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival this past year. I posted it as a video response. Please check it out and let me know what you think. Great tune! Gotta love Benny Goodman.
Picture of the band looks like it was taken sometime around 1935. Front row Allan Reuss, gt; Bill Depew, Hymie Schertzer, Art Rollini, Dick Clark on reeds; and Harry Goodman on bass. In the extreme left in the back is Jess Stacy on piano. Trumpets Nate Kazebier, Pee Wee Irwin, Chris Griffin and bones Red Ballard and Murray McEachern make up the second row. At the top is drummer Gene Krupa and out front is Benny Goodman. I had the pleasure of meeting Stacy, Irwin and Griffin years later.
Jess Stacy on piano, Harry James on trumpet. If you really want to be blown away utterly, check out the aircheck recording of this arrangement, issued on Columbia CD. Benny and Harry steam their way through four choruses each. Amazing!
Played the solo clarinet part for this in my high school Jazz band my sophomore year, best piece we played! :)

@redshark618
This song is one of the Essentially Ellington pieces, so a lot of bands and musicians can relate through it.
chargerfighter1 11 months ago
@chargerfighter1 I thought Mary Lou Williams wrote it?

@SatchmoSings
I think it's still used, I'm not entirely sure. I do know, though, that it is common (and awesome) jazz repertoire.

@TheBernie2201 Good to see you again!
Happy New Year.
Oh, and by the way, there is a network radio broadcast version of this that's much better than this studio recording.
