The story grew and the journey took on meaning as the characters found themselves and each other. As we performed with each other we found that we were modeling for ourselves new ways of being and transforming those challenged places within us. It became a rite of passage, witnessed by the community/audience, to the next stage of our journey:
The characters in this performance formed as we explored the secret, sacred, and amazingly diverse environments of Settler's park. They grew when we brought in the deepest, most challenged, parts of ourselves. We acknowledged those parts, inhabited the characters, and then and began to move with them.
The idea grew when we realized that the journey to the top was an important part of the experience. That we could bring in elements of the hero's journey: the guides; trolls; animals; maidens; and wise ones. And that it could have elements of a sacred journey: the portals (the tunnel, tree, and notch); natural beauty; silent walking; entry into another world (the blindfolds).
Damian of the Monkey Monks and Aerial Ariels here: Thanks so much for watching the video of our performance in Boulder's Settler's park on Friday Oct 26th 2011.
The Monkey Monks and Aerail Ariels is a collaborative ritual dance production group. We entered the process of creating this performance with the idea of creating an aerial dance among the red rocks and a trust of each other, and without a script.
This was one of the coolest, and most "magical," performances that I've ever had the privilege to be a part of. 6 glorious late summer evenings - fun, talented cast-mates, delightful, attentive audiences. Divine. I did the mime piece (starts at 14:42). It's called "The Rose of Life." "Aaaaahhhh!!!!

- The impotent troll: finding power as the guardian of the gateway.
- The faceless businessman: hiding the frightened animal finding trust and humanity.
- The maiden: without a stable base, reaching for the heavens and collapsing, but then finding earthly, feminine support and taking flight.
