Magellan is the best for me... particularly the model 4700. Garmin SUX! I have had MANY and have had numerous problems with them! I will say one thing, they have good tech support via phone... though you must have 45 minutes to wait to get that support. Crazy.

Mine couldn’t tell the difference between an access road and the freeway running in the same direction. It gets confused if roads are too close together. It couldn’t get satellites when I needed it the most and I couldn’t tell if it was saying 13 or 30.

Hey can anyone help me with something? Im thinking of getting a GPS, before i just use the good ol paper map, but since im moving to a new city, i thought i might get one to make things easier

Does the maps on the GPS come preloaded or do you have to download them yourself? And do you have to pay for them or are they free? Also is there some kind of monthly fee for the GPS service or is that free as well?

On Tomtom start 2 eu its much more compact. You dont have to carry that big thing behind the device. Look to Tomtom start 2 eu, and you will see what i mean.

I have a Garmin 1490T and the Navateq's Map is terrible. Navigator that I have on my Incredible is much much better, only that Google does not make maps on Garmin, they should. I can not use my phone for driving that is a safety issue. The best maps I ever seen was that of Street and Tips from Microsoft, every street was labled plus it looked like a map and not like a spider's web like with Navetaq. problem is that it is designed for a computer.

@Floyd005 The Navigation app has voice directions too. I use my Hero in a mount where my old GPS system use to be. There are also other application other than Google's: Navigation or Maps that can provide for navigational needs such as AndNav. To prevent my phone from turning off I use a usb charger and I also have a free internet whit my service provider( Meteor - Ireland)

I not live in USA, but I was here 2 weeks ago I bought one nuvi 265WT and tried driving in florida. all works ok. Now Im in my country and I loaded local maps and all works ok. If I bought magellan or tomtom I cant used these gps navigation system here. Theres more people working in Garmin compatible maps than any other, so Garmin is much better system for those than doesnt live in USA or Canada.

Garmin is the Best GPS built. if you are looking for a place or doing road trips and you go off the path no worries the Garmin will redirect your path and you can keep proceeding with out turning around and also more features have been added like food places and gas stations just about everything a driver would want to know the garmin offers it.

These are standard features available in GPS navigators for years. You can pick up an old used thing on craigslist which does all that.

Gripes about the map are a flaw of the map, not the device. Get a better map.

In Thailand where I live, the Garmin is unsurpassed. Their maps are simply the best, nothing else even comes close.

This (as with most) GPS reviews assumes everyone lives in the USA...

I am also looking to purchase this device for "out of the US" driving (Puerto Rico). There, the strreets are not always named or you may have the same name for ten diffent roads in one town.

My point is that this review assumes everyone lives in the USA which they don't. It could be said that the products best use would be in the USA as that's the intended target market, but compatibility and functionality in other markets could at least be referenced, even briefly. Or is that too much to ask?

Is it my job as consumer to find out where the manufacturer is based and choose my product (or review thereof) based on their locale?

With all the extra bells and whistles these gps are now including, photo viewing, mp3 ability, etc. Why are there so few that will accept a video input so I can have a backup camera? That is an actual "real" need where using it to do a "slide show" of my pics of Italy is NOT !

Garmin works great for normal long distance travel or multiple destination. Only problem I had was in the major cities like Chicago, because it can't distinguish lane well enough sometimes it gets me confused.(it has to do with GPS accuracy, I think more expansive model might have a better chip, my nuvi 260 cost 150 bucks) Plus in big cities with a lot of skyscraper, you GPS signal can get cut off sometimes. When you are in the cities, better walk get a cab, take the subway or bus.

Tom Tom = poor voice recognition, cartoon looking graphics that looks like a child drew with crayons, dim screen, poor text to speech qaulity, charges for traffic. Maybe we just preffer quality products.

actually garmin sells more units than tom tom if for no other reason than because they produce more than just automotive units (outdoor,fitness,marine,air,oe­m..). having the same map provider as google makes no difference if the software on the unit is inferior.

Actually they don't,world wide its TomTom ,Garminin in the USA for auto gps, thats what we are talking about... The processor for TomTom is 400MHz, Garmin 333MHz,I have compared the top models for myself and you can really notice when it calculates the route,
