Not like the actors, the real Gandalf and Aragorn were much better, but it was well thought out to make this film because it gives an idea of the pursuit of Smeagol. Yet there is no better than the trilogy.

I think they are trying to make Gollum seem scarier, because in the films were you scared of him? No, cuz you saw him openly to much, but in this film they are trying to make you use your imagination.

have you read the books ?

if so you may remember the part where stands that Gollum has an agreement with "the old lady" alias shelob, in which he has promised to get her food, if she let's him survive ;-)

i do remember reading that he was in awe of her evil. anyone that evil would never let anyone go. she cared about nothing but herself. it would be hard to figure how he talked to a spider but maybe being a ring bearer had something to do with it like it did for sam.any idea on my 2nd question?

he didnt have the ring when he met Shelob.thats for sure.but he still retained some of its side effect power ie. immortality.when Sam took the ring he understood the language of Mordor instantly without even trying.that is almost proof of how Golum may have been able to talk to spiders but who knows.

I did not know about this short film:it's freaking amazing! I actually like some of these colors/lighting a bit more than the TLOTR movies...It seems a bit more real, a couple of times. Amazing...I would love to see THE SILMARILLION made into a three part movie(including notes from other Tolkien writings). Wow, I love this movie. I hope they do more.
