Acting seems impossible to me..I often wondered if I'd be capable of doing it. I think the worst of it must be losing sight of who you really are, at the end of the day.

Given how you're describing it: a life of leisure and luxury for a fairly minimal amount of effort and millions of dollars, it sounds like an ideal job for everyone. Why aren't you doing it? Why aren't I doing it? Because not everyone can, and of those who can do it there are a handful that do it well.
@vickizspace Doesn't that make it a full time job then? The only work available to actors is work that forces them into 16 hour days for months at a time going from one location to the next. That can be fun, but it can also be arduous and isolating from family and friends. Once they're off set they have to deal with press junkets, answering dumb questions like these, and then avoiding paparazzi and tabloids. If they weren't getting paid millions of dollars, who in their right minds would do it?
Matt Damon has had a great career hasn't he? He's worked with amazing people which makes he think he treats them well. I would imagine he's a nice guy. Happy to watch his career flourish.
I'm an actor. It's really fucking hard and really scary. The real work is done before the cameras roll or the curtains open. You have to give yourself: (your mind, your body, all your time) into it. It's mentally, physically, emotionally exhausting. Also, the fear and insecurity you put yourself through can mess with you. It can effect your health. It's like a psychosis. THEN, there's no guarantees if you will get work. Most actors never become recognized or achieve financial success.

Well I think it is an amazing collabaration between money producers and maybe directors who when they see someone can act has a lot of audience appeal then they use that person more and more and when it works with that particular appealing person they make money and what makes it hard for other aspiring actors ,is they are loathe to chang e the formula and so they keep milking it to death,As long as it makes money rather than start again with a new face..When your on a good thing stick to it,

Not many people are brave enough to enter the movie business because the odds are against you. You can become a doctor or lawyer just by working hard and getting a degree. And acting isnt US thing only. Most of the biggest movie festivals are held in Europe. Bollywood is in fact much bigger then Hollywood. You also have to study for acting, just like any other job, where carrier depends of many aspects, not only talent or luck.

There cant be 20 first place winners in sports, same with acting. Today Angelina Jolie is at the top, in 5 years it may be yet unknown actress. Acting is difficult. Anyone who says it's "easy", you're wrong. If acting is easy, then what's the difference between Robert De Niro and Josh Hartnett? Meryl Streep and Miley Cyrus? Jessica Biel and Cate Blanchette? Acting "alright" is one thing, and creating depth and reality is another. Especially on set, under pressure, in front of 100 crew members. It's just as hard as anything else. Don't forget they work up to 16 hours on set sometimes, and it can be emotionally draining.

Um yeah I am an actor. When you've drilled the lines hard into your head, and then are forced to say them over and over and over again and make them sound real and genuine each time, sometimes with tears, or laughter, or screaming, it's difficult. I'm not devalueing any other profession at all--all I'm saying is don't devalue this one.
It's hard work as in difficult to achieve, and in the attempt to achieve it, you may be working very hard physically and emotionally. You have to research your role, try to understand it and then have to deliver when it counts. Plus the hours are often long. Anyone who thinks it's easy has no idea what they're talking about. good acting is an incredibly hard skill to master, not many people are able to display the same level of skill that say de niro did in the godfather pt 2. however lots of people are able to display the skill of working on a construction site.

While I agree with you about De Niro,however, I think there are people who work on building sites that are great actors (and comedians) who just don't have the face that fits or get the breaks.
I have known many a frustrated but very very talented musician/actors on building sites.
There are many famous 'bad' actors as well.
Let's not forget that the director 'show's the actors what he/she wants and the actors follow.
With acting the hard work is getting the foot in the door and finding work.
Good post mate. I have no doubt that there are talented artists on building sites that may or may not have the 'face' for the screen. Whether we like it or not though, image/visuals are bigs part of film. At the end of the day though, it doesn't take away from the fact that those who are talented actors and do get to the top of the game are doing a hard job. Jordan was the greatest basketballer in history. I work with this stuff, and I think it is naive to discredit this work. You are constantly exposed and have people commenting every layer of you. At the same time it's part of your job to expose. This is an art profession and is hard on different merits. Besides you often have to work 10-12 hours a day without any day offs. Thinking mainly theater here.
Those top of the tree actors say it's hard because, after such a long period of doing it, that's all they now know. If they did a week a furniture removalist work, irrespective of the income derived from either, they'd be quick to tell you how hard the latter is.
Only the fewest actors are in a posistion like these. 99,9 % of all actors are unknown. Work two to three times as much for the same amount of money. Must always be present for rehearsels that last for 10 to 12 hours icluding weekends. They must always be present
when the plays are on. There are 50 or more showings of these. Sickness is no excuse, only you being dead is. Lost your father? Still have to perform for tonights show. You invest ur whole life into it, and still most fail. Destitute.
Also, I think you ever get to hear an interview with Kurt Russell, perhaps other than what's online of him, your mind might well be changed in respect to how difficult film acting is.
You have to walk a mile in someone else's shoes, and, very importantly, include remuneration into any critique. Top actors can retire young. A carpet layer can't.
Besides these people are an extreme minority, and is in the most ideal position possible. But remember out of 10.000 ppl that try to get that far, only 1 succeed. You need to be entirely commited, proffesional, endurant and passionate. Robert deniro sisn't start out famous and well paid. He had to risk everything , and was strong and lucky enough to finnaly pull it of, through years and years of trial and error. A carpet layer has a routine, when he knows the job, he knows his job. Acting is hard...just do the math people. How many hollywood actors are there in the world? How many doctors? engineers? lawyers? Not many people are brave enough to enter the movie business because the odds are against you. You can become a doctor or lawyer just by working hard and getting a degree. Can you get a degree that will guarantee you an acting job in a blockbuster movie? Acting is about talent and a HUGE amount of luck...

And acting isnt US thing only. Most of the biggest movie festivals are held in Europe. Bollywood is in fact much bigger then Hollywood. You also have to study for acting, just like any other job, where carrier depends of many aspects, not only talent or luck.

There cant be 20 first place winners in sports, same with acting. Today Angelina Jolie is at the top, in 5 years it may be yet unknown actress. Doing math here is kind of difficult, since actors just come and go, and you never know when they come or go. Come to think of it.... i never aspired to being an actor hehe :)

Acting is difficult. Anyone who says it's "easy", you're wrong. If acting is easy, then what's the difference between Robert De Niro and Josh Hartnett? Meryl Streep and Miley Cyrus? Jessica Biel and Cate Blanchette? Acting "alright" is one thing, and creating depth and reality is another. Especially on set, under pressure, in front of 100 crew members. It's just as hard as anything else. Don't forget they work up to 16 hours on set sometimes, and it can be emotionally draining.

It's hard work as in difficult to achieve, and in the attempt to achieve it, you may be working very hard physically and emotionally. You have to research your role, try to understand it and then have to deliver when it counts. Plus the hours are often long. Anyone who thinks it's easy has no idea what they're talking about. Its not HARD work like in working in a factory which can be exhausting because you dont want to be there.. If you love what you do its you can find the energy to work much more easily. good acting is an incredibly hard skill to master, not many people are able to display the same level of skill that say de niro did in the godfather pt 2. however lots of people are able to display the skill of working on a construction site.
however i agree that actors have a far easier life than say laborers who do put in a lot of hard work and physical grind.
there hard work as in how much you have to push yourself, and then theres hard work as in how difficult it is to demonstrate a skill

While I agree with you about De Niro,however, I think there are people who work on building sites that are great actors (and comedians) who just don't have the face that fits or get the breaks.
I have known many a frustrated but very very talented musician/actors on building sites.
There are many famous 'bad' actors as well.
Let's not forget that the director 'show's the actors what he/she wants and the actors follow.
With acting the hard work is getting the foot in the door and finding work.

Actually, no I don't. Many people work hard for the same hours on two jobs just to make ends meet. Actors may be on set for 16 hours but they aren't 'working' for 16 hours the crew are. Many actors manage to avoid publicity very well, like Matt damon,only the ones that look for publicity are hassled. Everybody has to make decisions to further their career. I think you'll find statistically that there are far more people from other jobs that resort to alcohol and drugs.

I work with this stuff, and I think it is naive to discredit this work. You are constantly exposed and have people commenting every layer of you. At the same time it's part of your job to expose. This is an art profession and is hard on different merits. Besides you often have to work 10-12 hours a day without any day offs. Thinking mainly theater here.
