look on the Scientific 1880's 2-6-0, behind the pilot truck is a big space, big enough for a 4 wheel pilot truck, do you think it's possible to bash it into a 4-6-0?
I have 4 scientific 1880's style 2-6-0s, they are great to run and easy to modify. I'm modifying a Rio Grande one with detailing and new parts, they always come up on ebay and there not cheesy.. well, its my opinion. The only thing wrong with these are their not really based on a prototype (i've found 3 locomotives which look like this bt they are 4-6-0s) and they always have guady paint schemes (some are okay but most have flashy colors).
The only problem I can see, with these locos, is the leading truck has a tendency to derail. If you look closely at my video, you can see that the leading truck is not on the rails. Otherwise I agree with you that alot can be done with them.
@pennyf9 Hey, it's cool to hear somebody modifies G-scale stuff! In the literature, you always hear everything above HO called "toy," whereas the term "model" is generally reserved for HO- and smaller. I'm glad G-scale is getting some attention.
I haven't "played with trains" (read: worked on models!) since almost middle school, and I miss it. Broke my old pike down years ago :-( Hope y'all are having fun with these!
These trains have a following. Just as LGB, LIONEL and others became more popular after the demise of the company that originally manufactured them, so do these battery operated trains have a die hard fan base. I agree, the cars are rather light in weight, and will tend to leave the rails once in awhile.
These trains like New Bright and Scientific Toys can be great if you know what you're getting into and know how to care for them properly like me-They make up my whole g scale railroad roster. I've noticed that most Bachmann and LGB fans frown upon them.
They are unique trains, and can be very enjoyable, as you mentioned. Collecting and or operating TOY trains, whether cast iron models of the 19th century, or the most sophisticated electronic models of today are the choice of the collector/operator, and should not be frowned upon by one another. This hobby is meant to be fun, and I believe that we can all learn from each and every type of railway modelling there is. Post some videos of your trains if you can. I would enjoy seeing them.
You're right in what you say. I would enjoy showing you my trains, I have a lot. Would you like to see my kitbashed Scientific Toys 2-6-0 mogul, A New Bright 2-6-2 prairie, a New Bright 2-6-0 mogul, or a N ew Bright 4-4-0 American?
Okay, I'll see if I get some time this weekend to upload a video of my New Bright 4-4-0 American, the #4 Roy O. Disney with its consist the blue 400 series coaches. I'll let you know when I upload it.
The sounds that I have on my Scientific Toys engine are similar to this one, but I think the whistle on mine is more high-pitched because it's an 1800s Western- styled 2-6-0 mogul. The whistle on this one is kind of low-pitched, right?

I do not believe that Scientific Trains made any passenger cars. However, have you looked at some of the other manufacturers like New Bright? Check out Ebay. Look under G scale trains. Keep a close eye on the type of couplers that are on the cars you look at. Most of these type of trains have the same inverted hook and loop couplers, that will match one another.
New Bright made passenger cars in two types. One is an open end coach made with a simulated snow covered roof or regular roof. They also made an open sided coach for a Disneyland set. Also I believe a number of years ago Con Cor made an open end car.
The open sided coach was made for the Walt Disney World Railroad set in 1988. The first and oldest G scale battery operated train that New Bright produced was the Silver Rail Express in 1986.
You may not consider it true "G". However, placed beside any of the "G" gauge trains manufactured today, it sizes up to all of them. What is considered "G"? The various manufacturers make anything from 1:32 to 1:20. And scratch builders have been building 1:18. I believe anything larger than that is considered"F" gauge.

@pennyf9 I don't see why not. Alittle thought might have to go into it, but I'm sure it can be done.

It sounds more like a large steam engine whistle.
GG1man 2 years ago
Yes, I know, but in your opinion, does the whistle tend to sound more high or low in pitchness?

I would say it is on the low side.

No, these trains are battery operated, with the on/off switch being located on the loco.

Ok, I just wanted to know since brass track is more abundant than the track for scientific trains.

You can buy these at Publix. They have a lot of them there.
