Historically the British Army was an army of occupation with a terrible human rights track record - granted. But the boys who deployed from 1969 onwards were sent to support the police. PIRA didn't see it that way though - they viewed it as occupation once again. I wondered what had happened if they hadn't deployed? Perhaps we shouldn't of bothered and watched a little Serbia or Rwanda unfold across the Irish Sea. I wonder what pop group would of made of song about Irishmen killing Irishmen?
'And so as I patrol in the valley of tricolour'................. well someone had to patrol those valleys, to protect the peaceful law abiding folk from those nutter paddies who just loved killing and maiming!
@SunrayDown no disrespect sunraydown you talkin absolute shite ,the british where an army of occupation and as such they where fair game ,they came to ireland and colonised it and where responsible of the death many hundreds of thousands of people due to famine ,also the mass emigration due to colonisation ,what about bloody sunday, the guildford four ,the birmingham six ,or have you simply forgotten them ,you and your country have been responsible for some awful killings have you forgotten that
One of the best lyricists of our time. Yes, I know all about Bono but don't think he comes close, "who orders desecration, mutilatoin verbal m>>>> in the garden of beaurocratic wants" what a line...
Perfect!! - This is THE song for peace on earth! - Hope MY kids become as old than i am now (56) ....- still a great german fan of Marillion(with Fish!!) since 1982 - my kids too, growin´ up with Genesis, Pink Floyd, Stones, Jethro Tull, and so on...
THANK YOU for uploading!!! - it´s a journey to the past...., but still present!!
@koszmarnykarolek oh stupid me. i thought the troubles took place in NORTHERN IRELAND a part of the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland.
Wow!!! This version makes me flying out in outer space. Is it possible to make music good as this???? Fish ..... shoots himself in the end here....but puh...he stands up again....I love it.
I agree with the poster that says "he writes like Shakespeare". Amazing lyrics and performance. Does anybody know where/when this recording was made? Are there any other songs from this show on You Tube? Fish is at SUCH a high artistic level here, I would love to see more of this show.
marillion i know him from the first album "fugazi" and that was before the cd I whish that he is coming back to marillion bacause with the new man on vocal marillion is nothing
i got into Marillion back in the 80`s and the 1st time i heard this song it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck and gave me goose bumps....27 years later its still doing the same ......whatever war , whatever conflict there will always be `just another forgotten son`
I think you'll find it's an intentional pun on Isle/Aisle. What's sad is that 25 years later this song is still relevant with our boys being blown to pieces and killed in Afghanistan and Iraq - we never learn.......
Captainquark9, the sad thing is that it's not over, and won't be for another generation. As an Ulsterman friend said to me last night - "It won't be over while you still have Grandaddy's telling their Grandchildren how it was". I don't mean to be negative but that's how it is - This brilliant song is very emotive.
I agree. I'm 25 and I was brought up on this by my parents (now in their 40's). I will for sure be playing marillion to my kids when I have some. Marillion will go on in the hearts and minds of a couple more generations yet.
Forgotten sons, Chelsea monday and Script for a jesters tear have at least five times more listens on my ipod than any other songs. The album Script for a jesters tear is a masterpiece. The lyrics are amazing. Makes me feel sad when I hear the shit 'lyrics' of more modern artists, especially that r 'n' b bullshit that people are spoon fed nowadays.
I actually don't understand how people can listen to pop. It just doesn't add up in my mind. The most ridiculous part of it is the number of great bands who get ignored due to the influx of crap, which ruins their careers and serves only to help in the orchestrated retardification of the populace.
I even did a gig with my band @ Sopot Festival 1991 with Marillion as the star of the event [no Fish @that time :-( ]
About pop-throw-up "music": I think, those globalists & NWO fascist don't need thoughtful & wise generation but retarded one in order to manipulate them easily (giving'em games & bread)... so they promote any type of the "plastic food" in any area of the social life..
Fish always managed to make the crowd go completely silent. And then he would reply "friend". He would wait. Even if it took several minutes. But he would make his point. Is there ANY performer who could do this? Such a loss... such a loss that Fish left Marillion.
saw them live - the passion they put into performing this song nearly broke my heart. Still does even after a quarter of a century (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) since it release.
Amazing to see this again, Fish was marillion, have to say i lost interest when Fish left. Script for a jesters tear is one of the best albums ever, seen them so many times, great memories.
I guess you guys all miss the lyric "your death and a terrorists smile". This was not an anti UK song but rather a commentary on the hoplessness of the situation. War sucks but violence is usually the only thing that works against cowards/people who like to put nail bombs in baby carriages.
Would've been nice if the sentiments of this song were a thing of the past, but with Bush jr getting rimmed from Blair & now Brown there seems to be no end to the stupidity of modern-day war.
Fish ruled the stage then & it's sad that the other guys decided to carry on without. Taking Fish out of Marillion was like having a pint of beer with all the beer taken out of it beforehand. Not the same is it?
Anyway, a grave, timeless anti-war testimony. But let us think of our mobiles, diets and mortgages instead, it makes all this so much easier......... :-(
Seeing this after all these years I wonder if anything has changed at all ? Replace Emerald isleat 02:27 with any site of conflict of your choice and you're back in 2008, or Mother Brown at 04:30 with whatever name of GIs - it makes me feel sick, sick, sick, sick
Love this song always have! its timeless! But how many forgotton sons has there been since this song! Too many! If only mr blair had listened to this before lying to us and sendin more sons to die!
omg just seen this vid for the first time (thogh i know a shorter version) what an amazeing song, what a fantaastic stageshow, it's allmost disturbing but fascinateing, thanks for uploading this!
A critique that has come to fruition at last as the British government is at last going to honour those "Forgotten Sons" of the Forces who have died in service since WWII to the present day.
You're just another coffin on its way down the emerald aisle When your children's stony glances mourn your death in a terrorist's smile The bomber's arm placing fiery gifts on the supermarket shelves Alley sings with shrapnel detonate a temporary hell Forgotten Sons
Fantastic - coming from Belfast this song had such resonance - particularly at the time that all we had was U2 - Bloody Sunday - that did more to divide than anything else.
Not so foreign shores indeed!
This should bring us hope - look how far we have come in Northern Ireland - could not have imagined it when Fish penned this track
No matter how many times I hear this song, it still sends chills down my spine. What an amazing song...what an amazing band. H's material is decent as well = check out 'Brave' and 'Marbles'
Now blair is going, its about time the Labour government got out and the soldiers in iraq too..this song will always be relevant to all the wars that world has
