Nice dude. Glad to see western mountaineering make an apperance on one of these UL vids. I checked out golite and looks like a good trap! Check out big agnes clearview for a summer pad its a little lighter. and You should check out steripen, it uses uv light to purify water. I use a MSR hyper flow just because I don't trust anything electronic on LONG trips but I like steripens concept for short ones. Good vid man! Have fun out there!
man my setup is so heavy it sucks i got a alice pack with a walmart sleeping bag, im bout to get a eureka solitaire. But im broke and dont have money for nice gear like that
I'm amazed how much more comfortable I am with a pack thats under twenty pounds with fuel and four quarts of water. It puts my ancient style of backpacking to shame. I used to haul eighty lbs of gear, but slowly I began to lighten the lode and life on the go began to change. Now, ten years later, life on the trail is a wonderful experience. We gotta keep spreading the word. I'm amazed at how resistant people are to change, though, but I keep trying. When someone asks, 'That's your whole pack?'.
Nice kit. Very light. What I don't take with me now are the trekking poles. After wearing out three sets and about to purchase a fourth I decided to put off buying them. I don't use 'em at all, now. My hiking speed and enjoyment is more variable and quickly adjusts to conditions without them. I now like it that my hands are free. I'll never go back, probably. I also use a homemade alcohol stove. It's lighter and easier to find fuel and way cheaper. Tekking poles have their place, but not for me.
@Hawkgts I put my food in a stuff sack strug up in a tree. and the bivy i sleep in completely encloses me. Ive only had one problem with a bat one time. flew into my tarp and fluttered around for a minuet and flew back out.
I am not sure I would feel comfortable going ultralight. There would be many important items I would have to leave out. I like having backup items. I currently EDC 4 flashlights and 4 knives. It's also good to have 5 different ways to make fire. The fire kit in my bug out bag has: 2 bic lighters, a small butane torch, storm matches, a fire steel, a Fresnel lens, and some tinder made from dryer lint and wax. It's also good to have 550 paracord. I have some in my BOB and my EDC.
i think you are over doing it a bit. 4 flashlights and 4 knives? how many months do you plan on being out there? Why 5 ways to make fire? Take cotton balls and soak up some petroleum jelly melted in the microwave, they burn for 5+ minutes and are waterproof.
I know everyone does it different, but it seems as if you are going overboard on these things.
@mjhall1812 I like to have backups. If something happens to my main flashlight, I don't want to be stuck in the dark. Also, different items have different functions. My multi-tool has tools my swiss army knife doesn't. As for the fire, again, I like backups. Disposable lights can fail or run out of fuel. Bic lighters wont work well in the wind, a butane torch will. The storm matches will work when it's windy and wet. I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
You should check out my kit. Made almost evey thing myself, that a lie. Made some of the stuff but it wieghs 14.5 pounds. I'm mainly looking for tips on what i can do to go even lighter for less. I'm working on making my own sleeping bag. I'm a cold sleep so i gotta have a good one and i don't have 240 bucks to spend. Thanks
I like the idea of the sock for the "filter" over the bottle. I have a Katadyn Hiker Pro, but just purchased some Aqua Mira to lighten my load a little. I also carry the Powerade / Gatorade bottle. Thanks for the tip.
My wife nudged me at your comment about the SPOT. Good point man.
How do you like the MLD bivy? Is it the bug bivy, or one of the other ones? I heard you say it had mesh on it. I am actually going to make my own MLD Bug Bivy knock off soon, all my materials came in the other day.
Nice kit!

dont use a windscreen with a pocket rocket. it turns it into a bomb because the windscreen traps heat by the fuel canister turning it into a bomb!

@purplemutantas Definetely overdoing it. One flashlight, one knife, and flint and steel is all you need. Get some Wetfire fuel too
