It's really a dreadful shame this beautiful instruement isn't played mroe often. They use the band more than the organ. I remember walking into Clavary at 5 yrs old and just crying thinking of hof how it might be in heaven :)
I agree - the church we attend is struggling with the "contemporary vs traditional" issue. The most important thing which should be considered but often is not is "does the music regardless of genre speak a message proclaiming/teaching Jesus Christ?". With that said, I do like to hear a pipe organ such as our 60 rank Austin or another church's 70 rank Shantz / Colby hybrid in the hands of a talented organist playing with spirit and energy.
I wish I could download this song... bishfan, do you have an account for Contre Bombarde? My user name is pipeorganmaster. I think I have seen you on there once or twice.
@BH061595 I do have a Contre Bombarde account. The only thing is, I would be reluctant to post a non-Hauptwerk recording on that site. This piece is available on CD played by Diane. I'll post the link in the info bar.
She kicks ass!...I caught her while channel surfing awhile back...........I stop on that channel everytime if I see her........Amazing footwork...How do you do that?
Oh my gosh... such a powerful arrangement! when she broke out into a variation of Bach in the middle, it almost brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing!
what a filthy solo reed there. Love it. Although I do feel that the whole hymn melody is played far too fast in relation to how it is sung normally. Would have been more effective to have elongated the choral melody there.

There's the great Bach inside..."O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" from the Crucifying Scene of Bach's "Matthew Passion). Bach is unbeatable, Diane Bish should never "juggle" with his music.
Actually, she's not "juggling" with his music, but rather tying in the crucifixion with the resurrection. This was written as a choral anthem that she adapted to organ solo as well, but you should listen to the choral piece. It might tie everything together for you.
I will agree with the happy clappy contemporary worship. It's not my taste, a rock bank in church is unacceptable. The one church, the Episcopal church, has done a marvelous job at preserving the traditional Anglican music. At least one church still holds sacred music sacred
It a congregation prefer rock music that's up to them............there are a lot of similarities to Bach , especially when its played on a big loud organ!
In today's diminishing congregations anything that gets them through the doors has to be a good thing. As my nan used to tell me, there are too many church goers who put their religion away with their suits!!!
If my memory serves me correctly Diane didn't dedicate this organ. It was actually dedicated by Dan Miller the former organist at Calvary. I was there the night he did it. The organ was actually designed by a good friend of mine.
@ncguy207 The organ was actually featured in a series of "Dedication" recitals. I happened to be there for a dreadful recital by a world renowned organist that will remain nameless. We knew we were in for a real "treat" when he stopped midway through the Sowerby "Pageant", hopped off the bench and announced "I have on the wrong shoes", disappeared into the greenery and returned to "finish up". We lovingly call this "The Organ that Ate Charlotte" in "The Mary Kay Cathedral".
They've just recently spent thousands of dollars adding to the Ruffatti at Coral Ridge and revoicing it, so if they do abandon the organ, it would be an incredible waste of their money.
Are you talking about using the organ at Coral ridge or at Calvary church? Because a few months ago i went to an organ concert and the organist was the organist from Coral ridge, My organist knows him and i was under the impression that they still use it. But if your talking about the Calvary church organ... they are wasting that amazing organ
Coral Ridge IS using their organ. They are changing their service times. They are now calling the Traditional service The Classical Service, which will be a 9am. Sunday School will be in the middle and the Blended service is being moving to the Sanctuary so that the organ can be used for that service also along with what ever contemporary music they use.
i was just checking calvary church's website and it is quoted "The worship music is a blend of traditional and contemporary compositions incorporating choir, orchestra, and organ."
It's more like 95% contemporary and I wouldn't quite call it an orchestra. It's really "happy-clappy." Not everyone would agree on music for worship, but when you have a 4 million dollar pipe organ you would expect it to be used - a lot! It's rarely featured alone in service, but up until now, at least there were monthly recitals given by Mr. Cleaveland. There was a time several years ago when you couldn't even visit to play/practice; that time is probably coming again.
Ahhhh, how beautiful.

Yes. Now many have gone to keyboards. To me, keyboards are an insult to pianos and organs.

In her other programs, when the choir sings along with this piece, it's played at about the same speed and they seem to be able to keep up with it.

Gotta admit I love that filthy solo reed! haha
but its just the 16' added to it which probably makes it so horrid

if you have a church with a pipe organ, use it! The more an organ is used, the better. If you let it sit there, it will eventually go out of tune.

My organ teacher always told me playing the organ will help keep the dust from settling in the pipes.
