perlman its awesome, also john williams... but that its very distorted tango.. i dont know why they made it so hispanic/mediterranean... in hollywood th best example of tango is in moulin rouge
@bettuxx How is it distorted? 1! 2 3 4, 1! 2 3 4.... >> The composer is french, which is quite near Spain and the mediterrenian. The composer also died in Columbia which is... hispanic. It is no stretch of the immagination to play a tango, in a hispanic style... The tango itself is hispanic in origin(Argentina). What else would you make them have it be? Klezmer?
Anyone who thinks that Lee Che-Yi did a better job is insane. Lee Che-Yi did a good job, but it's not better than Perlman's. Itzhak's had more musicality. Lee sounded rushed at times and off-balance in certain passages.
@histfanatic at 1:53 I guess its more of a tone then an actual note. But the jump before that was pretty ugly... It sounded as if Perlman was trying to cover his previous mistake...

John Williams refers Carlos Garden to make no hater says he is taking ownership... sorry for my poor Spanish...
Perlman does not overcomplicate this piece, but - in your opinion - Williams did. The piece played has everything to do with the composer. The artist, in this case, Perlman, just performs it.
@xaviervandepoll I think Williams made a very good job by arranging this piece. The way he composes for violin is just wonderful and amazing. He has made so many good pieces for violin (the two concerti, Schindler's list, Memoirs of a Geisha etc.).
That is very true, but the discussion here was about Williams overcomplicating this piece, and I partly agree. This piece was meant with a simple melody, and Williams took away the simplicity and exanged it for brilliant and technically not easy stuff, which takes away the magic a bit, in my opinion.
Of course, he's a brilliant composer, bust in my opinion, he's overdone this piece.
Of course you can't "[k]now him", Williams! Carlos Gardel died in a plane crash, along with three (3) of his guitarists, on June 24,1935. and, yes, He was called "The King of Tango" or "The Magician" by his contemporaries.

@diemattadam Merci beaucoup! I liked very much. I actually followed Sori1004jy throughout youtube upon your suggestion. I commented too. Whenever an asian person playing strings, or piano, or anything really, I am enchanted. American performances too often, not all but a lot, seem forced and pressured. Asian performances seem appreciative and respectful. Russian, European, and South American performances seem passionate.Hillary Hahn being the exception, to me at least. I started a war here! LOL!
@diemattadam Yes she is awesome! Funny looking electric violin though! Do you listen to Bond? Another of my favorite in strings music groups, and they are beautiful women too, which ain't bad!
@diemattadam I am TRYING to learn violin. Amazing I feel that I have learned skills in languages, science, history, archaeology, but have NO talent or skill whatsoever in music! I guess because i am left handed (making excuses now, LOL!) I will never learn violin. Even piano increasing octave scale and Bass note ranges are opposite to my brain as lefty. But, I cherish and love music, all types and kind, as evidenced by my channel!
@MagnetoMasterOfEvil haha i suppose it should be easier for u to play because you will have more control of your left hand and play the notes more accurately
@diemattadam Well I definitely appreciate your confidence in my ability! ( Cough, laugh!), But a lefty always has a coordination, or syncopation problem with the other hand. I wish I could do it. It requires a brain concentration that causes a skip when playing. Does that make sense? If I eat with my left hand it is fine. If I eat with my right hand, I wear the food on my shirt! LOL!
fantastic! i saw perlman play in peoria a few years ago and he was absolutly amazing. He is really an inspiration for me. This tango shows Williams' the length of composing, rather than just for the movie themes we know him for. Even though William didnt write this piece, and the arrangment is still great.
It is very difficult to take Gene Shalit seriously with the Jerry Colona look a like get up and the mustache that overwhems one with a hysterical laughing fit ....man I am glad they took him off the air.....
How can people NOT like this? I guess they just pressed the wrong button! This is perfection! (not talking about the mustach, that mustach really sucked!)
@dslmse john williams ooooo i love your stupidity, you must be a brave man to claim your foolness in public.... hoho that was so many years before john williams... however the song en español es una mierda!!! but this song souds so well played instrumental.
@fdvirtudes i can't understand how he direct the orquest, and plays Carlos Gardel tango without knowing nothing about him! Thats just ridiculus.! _(Srry for my engl)
@desapariciones You are ridiculus... If you don't know the composer, you cannot conduct one of his piece ?? In that case, nobody would conduct Beethoven Saint-Saëns, Tchaïkovsky etc...
I enjoyed this piece but not as much the version I first heard. Always was a fan of John Williams and I was shocked that we liked the same music piece enough for him to conduct it. I wish I knew the significance of the expression "For A Head." My Spanish teacher always did tell us when it comes to music not to take it so literally.
@TheEmissaryofCheese Wikipedia: "The lyrics of the song talk about a compulsive horse-track gambler who compares his addiction for horses with his attraction to women. [...] It translates to "by a head [of a horse]".
@TheEmissaryofCheese: For A Head signifique "for a while" becase the man who sing loose all his money (and all the proyects about many) in a horse ride, but diferece betwen first horse and second whas just a head....
Hi: for a head is "hardly " because singer man bets all his money in a horse ride, and loose all, but diference betwen first horse and second is minim, just a head.
@TheEmissaryofCheese Im from Argentina. I don't know really what is the pure meaning of the song, but "for a head" sometines we used that for say "We loose the match for only a head!" Anyway, is like a very old expression here, we don't really use it to much.
Horse races are very popular in Argentina. In the 1930´s jockeys were popular heroes as today´s football (soccer for americans and elsewhere extraterrestrials).
This Tango tells the sad story of a man who bets and loose at the horsetrack. He promises himself not to bet again; but admittes that if he has a good tip of a winning horse for the next race, he will bet all again...
The same old Williamsian flamboyance.

Who can't love this song especially when it is done so well as this!!!
It is a truly timeless piece of music that will be as fresh and beautiful 100 years from now as it was when Carlos Gardel wrote it 75 years ago...

Does John Williams say "Carlos Gardel, I don't know him"?... Williams was 3 when Gardel died in an plane crash, in 1935...

@fdvirtudes i can't understand how he direct the orquest, and plays Carlos Gardel tango without knowing nothing about him! Thats just ridiculus.! _(Srry for my engl)
desapariciones 1 year ago
@desapariciones You are ridiculus... If you don't know the composer, you cannot conduct one of his piece ?? In that case, nobody would conduct Beethoven Saint-Saëns, Tchaïkovsky etc...
GGbreizh 11 months ago
@GGbreizh no, im not saing that, i think if you wanna understand better his music, you have to know a little of the composser. bye
desapariciones 11 months ago
@desapariciones This video proof that you're wrong. John Williams has more than perfectly conducted this piece.
