Merlin was only one of the greatest sounds in history unless you were a german in world war 2 then the only sound you heard was death knocking at your door

That's because your from england.The 109 has a distintive scream in a dive and the merlin does not.Just happens to be my opinion....................

in that deep purr. Like a cat you want to keep your distance from.
Best of the best of WWII for performance & endurance. Besides, beautiful little bird.

Yup. My bad. Rashly assumed that USAAF's extreme fondness of turbocharging would carry over to RR design. Not.
Still, low exhaust sound level from both Merlin and Allison at low elevations is surprising, given blower boost and very low compression-ratio.
