In poker those bad beats happen, both in your favor and against you.
Good players accept this and know that if they're 80%/20% favorite, they will occasionally lose one of those every 5 times.
Bad players don't, they consider being 80%/20% as being 100%, and cannot accept it when the 20% wins. They blame bad luck as the reason for being a moderate loser, thinking that they'd be a winner if they weren't so unlucky. Just like Mike.
@kalorication hi you asked about insurance in poker. Insurance could have been where both players could run the turn and river 2x 3x 4x to give both players the chance to chop the pot. if the ran it 2x and the 10 8 held up the 2nd time the insurance was there and both would of chopped the pot.

@Leslie217 Insurance in a poker hand works like this. Matusow has top two pair. Seidel has AA - an over pair. Matusow is about a 75 to 25% favorite to win the hand. Mike thinks about getting insurance from Tony G. If they did it, Tony G would insure Mike's hand as protection from getting beat on the turn and river. The insurance negotiation would be based on the 75% chance that Mike has to win the pot, plus they decide upon a fee Tony G would get for providing the insurance.
insurance is when an outside guy put some of his own money on a "side bet" on the leading hand. In this case, the pot is about 150k and mattusow is leading on the flop, so if tony g take insurance on mike hand let's say he does it for half the money mike did put in the pot (75k/2 = 37k5). If Mike hold the best hand he owes 37k5 of the 150k pot to tony g so he will only win a 112k5 pot if he get the suck out (like here) he will take the 37k5 of tony g so he will only loose half his money

They do this in exchange for a portion of the winnings if your hand succeeds, which they call "juice". If your hand loses (i.e., you get unlucky) then the player that provided insurance covers your losses.

By insuring his hand he knows that no matter what happens in the hand he can keep playing. Of course he will also make less when he wins. With 75% equity in a $154k pot, Mike's hand is worth $115.5k, or a +$40.5k from his initial $75k stack. If he gives up $9k in long term equity to buy insurance his hand is now +$31.5k.

I can totally agree with Mike. How does this fuck push with one pair against about the tightest player or second tightest player at the table. I guess he can never put him on a set or 2 pair with a lead out and re raise on the flop can he? Mikes never re raising with a flush draw there.

Do you guys not realize that they have played thousands of hands with each other, and have way more information then we do just by watching them? If you trueley think you can come too the correct conclusion for the most optimal play, just based on how they played this hand, then your missing about 6 other equally as important factors in descsion making

@Disney312 Basically Tony G has a lot more money than Matusow. He can afford to insure Matusow's hand, and Matusow might have come to the table with enough for a single buy in. By insuring his hand he knows that no matter what happens in the hand he can keep playing. Of course he will also make less when he wins. With 75% equity in a $154k pot, Mike's hand is worth $115.5k, or a +$40.5k from his initial $75k stack. If he gives up $9k in long term equity to buy insurance his hand is now +$31.5k.

So Matusow might insure his $75k stack with Tony G for say $28k. 75% of the time Mike will win $154k and pay Tony G $28,000, leaving Mike with $126k. 25% of the time Mike will lose and Tony G will pay Mike back his $75k. So for Tony G it is a good investment since 3 out of 4 times he gets $28k. $28k x 3 = $84k. For the 1 in 4 times Mike loses Tony G pays him $75k. Long term it is $9k for G
