Not going to lie, this scene scared me shitless when I was a child. The headless Horseman's laugh, the music, and the fact that I was like 6. Now that I see it again, its not so bad. But still, this thing haunted my nightmares for years.
Words of wisdom: Never travel alone at night, especially if it's in a dark, creepy forest and some jerk told a scary story to frighten the crap out of you and your imagination is running wild because of it.
You have to be patient with the elderly sometimes with their banning this and banning that .This litle "cutie eith the bangs at the barn dance cracks me up every time I see it. Like all classics by Disney Bings' voice will endure just as the" Song of the South " finally surpassed all the so called racial nonsense of Uncle Remus.I am well in my 70s and cut my teeth on Bambi,Pinocchio, etc and now am passing these entertaining VCRs to my great grandchildren
@Fiddlercrab35 This is NOT banned. It has been available on DVD in its original format ("Ichabod And Mr. Toad") for over a decade now and there's also a DVD with just the Ichabod short.
Even Song Of The South is not really banned, Disney has just chosen not to release it on home video in the US. In fact, it's readily available in Europe and is even shown on TV there. People often use the word "banned" without knowing what the word really means.
god that horse! the first time i saw it it was soo frustrating! i was thinking: "RUN HORSE RUN! DONT JUST HANG YOUR HEAD AND WALK SLOWLY! THIS ISNT A DEATH WALK! OR IT COULD BE IF YOU DONT WALK FASTER!" I mean, even when he heard the horseman screech in the background, he just lay down to nap! but when he saw the horse man and ran away terrified, i was like: "Wow! I didn't think this horse COULD be scared!" \/.\/
I am looking to get a better copy of the Irving Washington documentary at the begining of part 1. Does anyone know where it can be had? I've downloaded a torrent copy, but its the same as this one, and the quality is quite poor. Does anyone have this on VHS perhaps?
Thanks for posting this at the right moment in the film, not during the halloween party, or right when he is being spooked already. Some people will never get an award for editing.
the horsemen always have fasincated me because i like it when he the laugh and way how he is just like the headless knight unless the headless knight and horsemen are the samething and so i have always wondered if the legend is true but i been doing research on the interent and i did found out that there is a sleepy hollow in new york so maybe one day i go there and see for myself
I mean the cartoon, you can find it even here. In that Disney Short there is the scariest wolf ever existed in the toon realm (He's kinda like the brother of the one from "Peter and the Wolf"), many people had nightmares about that wolf when the were kids; just as me.
@preswiz: It was shot off his neck by an enemy cannon ball. Afterwards, the missing cranium was never found. It was suspected that one of the old crones in Sleepy Hollow who dabbled in black magic had the spectre's missing part in some stories. Otherwise, in other versions, the Horseman was just Brom in disguise.
OMG!!! Thank you for posting this!!! I remeber watching this as a kid and it scared the crap out of me!! Now I see it for the first time in about 10 years (I'm 18) and I love it!!!!! Disney needs to go back to making cartoons like this, not the crap that they're making now!
This scene, including Brom's song used to creep me out as a child (which is what made Halloween great). Disney should go back to making these cartoons instead of the teen crap no one cares about. And I think the Headless Horseman is one of the greatest Disney villains in history. This was made at a time when Disney wasn't afraid of making anything too scary or anything. They were opening new doors to storytelling.
i agree. now disney as a trademark is just to show smiles and fun instead of what it really should be, like it used to. scaring the shit out of kids but leaving dear memories of the films =)
Uh, I never said that the horseman was Disney. I meant to say Disney's version of Irvin's character was fabulous and well created just like Chernabog and Maleficent.
@Disneyfan82 I completely agree with you. Disney should go back to the old classic cartoons that were actually funny instead of this Miley Cyrus crap we see more often than not. Thankfully, they do actually have something occasionally called "Have A Laugh" where they show some old disney cartoons. Man, I honestly don't know what came over disney...do they think all this teen crap will make Disney more popular?
@iknownothing34 The cartoons shown on "Have A Laugh" are re-edited and dubbed over with new voices, which to me is way more disrespectful to the legacy of the company than not showing the classic shorts in the first place.
@Disneyfan82 the headless horseman wasn't created by disney it was created by Washington Irving which is what this cartoon is based off the novel by Washington
thank you for posting. made an impression on me as a child and i look for it every halloween. i second everything said by thetinfit. top notch storytelling and still still surprisingly spooky. one of my all time favorites.
I don't know if anybody has said all of this yet, but thank you for uploading! This terrified me as a kid, so much that I would ask my parents to stop the tape when Brom's song started because I was that easily scared.
Looking back on this now, this is amazing--top notch animation, great atmosphere, buildup and storytelling, and all done at a time when Disney dared to be scary and care about the story and animation. I'll just end this now before I go into another crazy rant. Thank you again!
I love this version of the story the best.

So Bram won and got Katrina and Ichabod married someone else and had like eight kids? Weird ending.

@raerae1281 It doesn't actually say that's what became of Ichabod...merely that "rumors persisted" that he wasn't killed.
