@12elpida Mostly younger Germans just learn english in school from, erm, I think from the beginning in 1st class. I don't really understood your question, but I think you wanna know, if germans have to proof, that they can english. No. They have to speak german and understand it in germany, not other languages are needed, but everyone with "Abitur" (the education to qualify for studying in the university), surely can speak english. But not everyone had such an awesome "german" accent like Lena.

@12elpida I am studying on myself and I have to say, yes. But I study a science, so I just need it (Most Books are just wrote in english). But it depends on what you study. For example, If you study german Law, you only need the german language. But if you study things like engineering, you need english (I think it is in every university of the world, that you'll need an international language like english). But you don't even need german to study in a german University. English is enough^^

@12elpida ^^ Surely, Some of my friends are chinese and speak the german language very, erm, bad ;-). But they study here without big problems and get their marks (with english). I think, it could help, but I also think, that it is possible to study in germany (and maybe in other "international" counties like Japan), when you can speak english, and not the native language. Germans, for example, just understand it and normally everyone can communicate with english speaking people.

So, if it sounds kinda weird, it's because she is trying to speak with her best British accent, not an American one. And i think she does it very well. The problem that some people have with Lena is the rather pronounced accent when she sings which comes across as contrived and false. The debate is where the accent comes from. It's not American or Canadian, could be Australian. Personally, I think she's been listening to Damon Albarn and Blur too much! But she's not on her own.
