Here's a different take, wouldn't it be more advantageous for the lioness to let the cheetah live, so she can snag his prey? Cheetahs are very good at running down prey, but they are too weak to defend it. Lions and Hyenas typically drive off cheetahs from their kills without any kind of fight. The cheetahs do all the hard work, so it makes it easier for the lion to get food.
