what this lion is actually doing is a short grunt which can be heard up to 1 km away from each other in the wild, this is the mating call which can lead to death if heard by an angry male who leads a pride, for those who dont care hes just growling =)

@quickfinish97 that there my friend is a roar. All these movies and stuff have misled people. That call is very very loud when you actually hear the real thing from tens of meters away. On a still night, that call can carry 8 km or more. It;s frequency is 160 Hz on average.

Just for clarification, this isn't a roar. Lions make a variety of noises but a true "roar" is the sound made when a lion is attacking, threatened or engaged in aggressive behavior.

If you can find an actual video of a true "roar", you can tell a big difference from what this lion is doing. :)

to communicate.... its like asking why humans talk. if you mean why dont they meow its because lions tigers jaguars and leopards (or the Panthera family) have all evolved a different type of larynx and so they cant meow anymore. They roar as Mating Calls, Territorial Threats, Warnings, "Keep-Off my land" Roars, Angry, Annoyed, Sad. pretty much most emotions have thier own roar. which other lions would understand.

@fumala420 If that lion was raised in captivity, it would not survive in the wild. It would be suicidal to release it back into a natural habitat. It is used to zoo life and it helps educate people and encourge people to raise awareness about them. Zoos arent really a bad thing.
