  • You "run" an exercise lab?

Have a "background" in sports science?

    Interned with a D1 program?

Have a high bodyweight to strength ratio?

You are not a numbers guy?

    Speed is not everything?

Doing something once is creative, but twice is idiotic, yet you'll revisit this every 2-3 months or maybe put up some PR attempts?

-But you have no goals for this exercise?

    Ok, got it. Thx.

  • Yep that about sums it up! Taken in that context, everyone would sound stupid. You can't just pick and choose my statements, jumble them together and make a point. Really original.

  • Never go full retard

  • Who would really want to anyways? Come on. Now you're just commenting to say something idiotic. This is reminiscent of Chappelle's Show and the Player Haters Ball. hate, hate, hate, hate...not to sound a downer but I find it all kind of comical.

  • You're weak like a kitten and slow like a snail. Why, instead of inventing your own stupid exercises, not man up and start working out? Ya know, oly lifts, pulls ups, .... And I don't mean that cultfit shit, real weight, low number of reps, no cheating (yourself). Like the big guys do, of which you always wanted to be one before you started to invent your own sport like a kid suffering from Asperger. Get back to us in a few years when you've progress and leave the cam well alone in the meantime.

  • P.S.: "Jumping" is when you propell yourself from the ground so that for a moment you're higher up than you were. Like in high jump. In your case the box is lower than your knees, you're basically just falling down onto it with a barbell above your head. A very flexible person could do this "exercise" without any jump movement included.

  • Well I'm glad to know then that I'm flexible and I know how to fall down. Gravity is a bitch!

  • Ouch. I happen to like kittens, I find them cuddly and cute. Now snails....not so much.

Asperger? I hope you don't plan to have kids, because you might have a kid just like me! Then what? You gonna belittle him to make yourself feel better? I hope not, but if that's how you operate, I'm sorry to hear that then. A good positive now and again would do you well.

  • Because it's only a 20" box you're trying to jump on to and it's only ~30kg you're trying to snatch/clean, which you're really just pulling to your shoulders or overhead with your arms while doing a box jump. It's sorta reminisce of a weighted box jump.

Also, wearing lifting shoes is day and night with any kind of load.

  • I suppose it's similar to a weighted box jump, yes. The thing you may need to realize though is that I didn't have the thought of: "I'm gonna reinvent the weighted box jump!" No, my idea was to combine two movements to make something a little different. It may be similar to a weighted box jump; but it isn't one. That's the point. It never was created to become a sensation. It's a freedom of expression and movement. Period. I think you're looking into it too much.

  • For christs sake put on some shoes dude. You're a staph infection waiting to happen.

  • Perhaps you are right. That kind of advice is hard to pass up, but something feels just right not wearing shoes. Try it a few times, you may be the next convert to not wear shoes. Thanks.

  • Not only is that ineffective. you are slow as hell doing it. I don't think you can move slower and still jump.

  • Who said power and speed gains was my goal? I appreciate the feedback man, I do, but when you do something for the first time (as you're seeing here) you often times aren't the fastest MF out there. Think of it this way: if I'm that "slow" then how do I manage to develop enough power in that split second to jump up onto the box with a bar and a small load? Speed isn't everything. Thanks though for your thoughts.

  • Let me rephrase that: You did the exercise just because it was different. You didn't have any goals or improvements in mind (which is good, because by doing this exercise you'll only improve your chance to hurt yourself).

What I don't get is: You know that this is a crap exercise, why do you get all defensive if people agree with you and also write that the exercise is crap and has a good injury potential?

  • The thoughts you shared are actually pretty vindicated and I agree; to a point. Why do something that is crap? Why do something that could injure yourself? Why wake up and leave your house in the morning? You could get hit by a car, die in a plane crash, have a heart attack at any moment and can't do shit to stop it. The big idea is to do something life-like. To be outside the same old routine. Excuse my "defensive" nature, but why do most people gotta hate up on this?

  • If you don't like it, great! If you do like it, great as well. It was my idea, and I just thought I'd share it with whoever. I'm not out to reinvent the sport or the wheel. Thanks though.

  • I didn't state anything one way or the other. Simply cut to the meat of your comments & replies. Enjoy the koolaid.

  • But I still don't see how this will improve your [box] jumping or Olympic lifting, and I'm sure there are a million different ways to more effectively do either of those (like more squats and snatches and cleans) than this. This sorta reminds me of the BOSU ball.

  • Dude. I'm not trying to improve either of those. I'm merely taking two things I enjoy and combining them...for fun. If it ain't fun in some way, it ain't worth doing.

  • That's pretty sweet. I'd love to see a max effort on that. Man I would be so stoked to do that with 225 on the bar.

  • Ya I think anybody would be stoked to do that much with this movement! I'd be happy to do 135 lbs. It all depends on what are your goals. Mine are to have fun doing new things with my workouts, as well as find new ways to wake up the next morning and go "damn, that workout kicked my ass!" See what you can do just to start. Keep me up to date if you make some progress man. Thanks.

  • Yeah I really need to see what this looks like with a decent amount of weight on the bar. I could see this being very good and am going to be doing the snatch jump at my box tonight with 225 lbs.

Can you post a vid of one of these weighted (the snatch jump)? I want to make absolutely sure I have the form down. I'm about your size, and you seem to be in much better shape than me. I think that 225 would be a good weight for me to do this with.

    What are you maxing at?

  • Shit dude...225...hot damn. haha. I'll admit, I'm not a huge numbers guy. I appreciate the value of movements such as these, and like to push myself, but logistically, I do not know if 225 is a possibility...at least for me. I'd start with a PVC pipe, get the form down and then progress to the 45 lb. bar. From there, feel free to add load. It's a little awkward jumping with a bar and snatching or cleaning it. 225 is a goal, but in my opinion, start a little more reasonable. Thanks man though!

  • Lastly, I perhaps might get a video up next week of some more weight and/or progressions. We'll see...

  • Hey man. This seems pretty cool. You should post some max effort lifts of this. It looks pretty useful but I think it'd have to be heavier for it to do what you want it to do. Keep it up!

  • Ya man. I'd agree. Heavier weight would definitely cause greater muscle strain and therefore gains. Though, as some have pointed out, you couldn't do this all the time, less your form on standard O-lifts may become shabby. I'm interested in pushing it a little further then 10 lbs. a side though no doubt! In time...Thanks for the comment...appreciate it!

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I'm just gonna do what I already said.

And I don't push limits, I break them. You are such a soggy cunt, it's incredible to behold. If I were you I would put down the barbell and shoot myself. Fuck you.

But all kidding aside, solid work and good idea.

  • Thanks man. Good to hear the positive side of things. Make a video sometime dude...I'd love to check it out. Peace man.

  • OkayWhateverStupid: wow, I literally was laughing out loud. thanks for the compliments, I'll be sure to tell my mother. Anyways, on a "serious" note. If you are truly interested in doing this movement, or a combination thereof, may I suggest doin 21/15/9 of an O-Lift, followed by box jumps (perhaps one-legged box jumps, 20 inch box) finished by the 800m. Sounds to me like you've got a knack for pushing limits-obvious in the way you "complimented" me. be cool to hear back a positive. thanks man!

  • BrianDegennaro08: thanks for calling me out on my vagueness. my apologies. I cannot state I have an exact "purpose." you are correct though in stating that there should be a purpose for exercise/movement, otherwise what's the point. I was accomplishing a challenging warm-up; combining things I really enjoy: box jumps (sometimes in the starting form of a burpee), and Olympic lifts, of a light weight sort. I have no permanent plans for this movement. just to share and keep my workouts interesting!

  • Haha, you're so stupid. I wish I could go back in time and lend your mama the money to abort you. You're such a fucking dick in the dirt, you loser piece of shit.

But seriously, if I wanted to program these into my training, how many sets / reps? I was thinking of doing a 21/15/9 rotation of Power Jump Oly lifts, mixed with 800m sprints.

  • I don't think you answered any of the questions: what are you trying to accomplish with this exercise?

I do all my Olympic lifting with D1 teams, and there is a purpose to every "out of the box" exercise they are doing. What is your purpose?

  • AKeyboardWarrior: the goals of this exercise are to do something different. it has been stated widely that learning something new every few days or weeks helps keep the mind and body sharp. this is my attempt at creating something a little bit different. I cannot say this will make you x faster, y stronger, or z more powerful; all i can say is thinking outside the box (or in this case: on top) will help you push boundaries and surpass them! thanks for the comment.

  • Oh, ok. In that case goal accomplished. You should try a squat-sit-up next. Will also be very different.

  • Very true. Who knows what I'll try next.

  • cscsatc: i appreciate the comment. I have never PR'd this movement. safely dumping the weight would be highly similar to dumping it had you not jumped up on a box. If you would like to actually try this movement, I would suggest starting off with a PVC pipe. what you saw in the video was the first time I ever attempted this with weight; hence the failure on my first weighted jump snatch. thanks for your comments. let me know if I can help you in any other ways!

  • I am puzzled. What are the goals of this exercise?

  • Would you do a video to show how to properly miss this lift? Like when the weight is too heavy or when the jump doesn't clear the box?

What is your record on weight lifted on this? Would you video some PR attempts?

  • keckks: I hear what you are saying. This was a one-time thing that I will probably visit once every 2 or 3 months. I definitely don't want to fudge with my form good point about hitting one's self in the head...it may be creative once, but twice is idiotic. I get that. appreciate the feedback.

  • thanks for the feedback GrapeSuperChill...i appreciate it! i'm a positive person...feel like you are too

  • ...seriously... this will make you worse at any type of oly movement (encourages jumping forward; always bad idea in a snatch or clean), and to improve your vertical jump can be done way easier and safer (!).- it's "creative", that's true, but that can be said about someone hitting his head with a hammer, too.

  • Nice! Can't wait to see a 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 WOD on the main page!

  • Lastly. If you were to create your own video or something of the sort, then I'd be the first one to gladly see it and praise/critique you. Please don't sit here and throw stones electronically until you have tried what I did.

I look forward to your response and hope that it has a positive vibe about it. We could all use a little more positives in our lives; not negatives. Thanks again.

  • Secondly. I did an extensive internship in Olympic sports with a Division 1 program . I have seen what is out there and the beauty of living in America is the ability to do whatever the heck I please. My choice to share this innovative, yet "dangerous" movement is mine alone. As I said, I appreciate the comments but do not see how I am out of line. It really comes down to a difference of opinion. I like not wearing shoes, eating less, and having a high body weight to strength ratio.

  • grambo22. thanks for the comments. while I wouldn't consider them highly helpful, I will consider them a valid opinion: yours more specifically. Being that my background is in exercise and sport science and that I run an exercise lab, I would say I have an idea about what is going on with box jumps and weightlifting. The art of being creative doesn't grace everyone I realize; however, sometimes you just can't help thinking of something new and exciting to change up the routine.

  • 1) Why would you combine a box jump and weightlifting? If you understand the mechanics of these movements it makes zero sense and is going to ruin your WL technique (if you have any), plus it's dangerous if you used a real load.

    2) If you want to develop max power, snatch and clean heavy weight, do max height box jumps.

    3) You are very skinny, squat and eat more, you will get stronger and more powerful

    4) Get some damn shoes
