I was a cop in Wandsworth when this kicked off in 1981. The trouble then was the police did not speak to the black community, and the black community did not want to acknowledge the (black) youth was responsible for some nasty and violent crimes.
Today, Operation Trident etc. has a much harder approach to 'black' crime than in 1981. The difference now is the police TALK to the black community and the Black Community want to deal with their disaffected youth.

There was nothing wrong with SUS. Under the current PACE provisions and "stop and QUESTION" legislation are totally inadequate. I'm all for police being able to check people out if they might be up to no good. If they aren't, they won't get in trouble, so what's the problem?
More blacks were searched than whites, true, but there weren't many whites in these areas and it is a point of FACT that most criminals in Brixton happened to be black.

InTheRainstorm: Do you get search much? Answer, no. Are you white? Answer, most likely. You seem to think its a good idea for the police to go looking for 'criminals', just as long as they dont see you as SUS, right? After all your white youve done nothing wrong, right? I would remind you that non-whites are in a minority in the UK however we make the large majority of S&Ss. If the police were being even handed how could this be possible? Do white people not commit crime?

Are you saying that the whole (black or white) population should be treated like criminals, stopped and searched etc, in the search for the criminal minority?!

The police checked me and a friend out once when we were mucking around because they thought we might have been doing drugs (or each other). As it turned out neither was the case, so I didn't particularly give a fuck. I'd be quite happy to be Searched Under Suspicion because I think the police should follow their noses and, crucially, I don't flagrantly break the law.
Searches ARE disproportionately of minorities. Minorities commit a disproportionate AMOUNT of crime though. Makes sense.

you dont know anything in those days the police in brixton would drag any teenager black or white and beat them up in the backs of their vans
