@ 2:19, that is one of the Valente brothers. It's either Pedro or Guilherme. They are not related to the Gracies, but are so close to them, they were like sons to Helio. They began their training in Rio under Helio, Royler, and Rolker. They opened The Gracie Miami Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
The hilarious thing is that judo has been popular in the continental U.S. since the late 40's. Yet people viewed judo as strictly sport rather than an effective method for self-defense. In those days, there were (and still are) many judo clubs offering free judo instruction in community centers across the country, yet people chose instead to pay a lot of money to take karate or kung fu, because that's what they saw in the movies, so that's what they believed was effective.
Oh how I wish I had been born sooner so I could have attended this seminar. Even if I got my ass whooped, it would have been whooped by a Gracie. A privilege very few people get.
I love the fact that GM Helio was all smiles. Even when the students were practicing their RNC on him he was smiling. He was truly a man who LOVED to teach.
What took my attention is that the Gracies show here on this video an armbar counter ON A OPPONENT THAT STRETCHES THE ARMS BUT.. i don't know.. a fighter with a little bit groundskills NEVER WILL stretch his both arms.. (that is giving a present to your opponent like "here are my arms.. do a armbar with them".. :s:s:s).
I don't think it's Rener? Rener would be about 6 or 7 if this is actually 1990. I thought it actually looked like Rockson for a second but I think he was even younger then Rener?! It does look like a Gracie though doesn't it? Then again, with the way that family breeds it might be some long lost kid we've never heard of! LOL

How many of you would go back in time just to say you were at this historical event before it all blew up in the US and the rest of the world?

I started Jiu-jitsu in 1992, it was a revelation, like magic. And still love it and train/teach everyday!

I'm always amazed by Helio's movement and grace. He's must be 70+ y.o in this video, look at the way he moves! the strength, the energy...
I wanna be like him when I grow up.
May he RIP. A true master.
