No disrespect to those Alba brothers.. They cant skate like a Chris Miller can .. Very few could . Watch the guy for 5 seconds. But god damn .. He took a hit on that one!
I was there when it happend, and felt it from the background, but Chris was a bad ass grinder. I really miss the Pipeline. I was a member from 1980 to when they closed down to put in a bussniess park.
i tell you what.. the sheer beauty of the air is what strikes me.. if he fell, well, that'sunfortunate. but u can tell he had the confidence & he surely had no problem doing the trick.
I was there that day... insane. My opinion, Miller had better style.. and could get insanely more air than the Alba Bros. Alba Bros were classic old school.. carving around that pool tile, you could hear it from the parking lot... zzzzip... swoosh...
I have this contest on video. Tony Hawk won it and he couldn't even get over the coping. Actually, apart from Miller, Steadham rippped this pool as well. Lester was good but was injured and kept bailing.
BARRY.. first one on the scene yo... where is that dudes props.. he's the god dam skateboard doctor ya'll.. dam chris..shit man what the fuck.....and miller is king in that joint...
I remember watching him rip that place. I do remember how tight the tranny was. Damn, I miss that place. I wonder if people still cruise by there. I heard it's a housing development now.
i live right down the street from there, it's actually a industrial park now, the old skate shop building is still there, but no skate shop, oh and they took the pipe away too. dam i miss that place.
well theres a reason for him getting asked about that slam all the time. its the slam that set the tone for the future. at least a lot of people see it that way.
this contest was the NSA amateur final that pitted tony hawk vs chris miller in their last years as amateurs.
upland was chris' home park. he skated there weekly. he was a HUGE favorite to win the whole thing because of this.
So the way a lot of people see it, if he had not hung up the skate would would be a very diff place today
That pool wasn't that fun to skate, it was rough and big with small trannies... looking back on this slam it wasn't all that terrible... at the time we thought it would never be topped for a slam. Too bad, Miller would've won that contest, too.
It knocked him out for 1 second, & I wrote that it wasn't that fun for me. I forwarded this link to Chris and he said of course it was fun... And if you skated any of the other parks of the era then you'd know that Upland was bigger with smaller trannies than most. Primarily because it was built earlier and it was kept open longer than most. Pools like Winchester, Campbell, Marina, Whittier, Del Mar and others all had pools with bigger trannies, less vert, and were more fun to skate.
Uh, The "SLAM" wasnt fun ding dong. Of course the 'park' was fun.
The only parks I skated were Kona and Ocala. (Florida Boy). We did the backyard and motel searches in the winter for our pools. And of course built ramps.
Again, I wasnt saying Chris didnt think the park was fun, I was commenting on you insinuating the slam wasnt all that terrible. Id hate to see your terrible. Besides all the recent mega-ramp slams, this rates right up there. I broke my collar bone on a slam very similar.
Definitely the sickest slam of it's era. Some of the stuff happening on today's mega-ramps is pretty sick too, but this one was GNARLY. Chris was out for awhile.

Uh...it knocked him out. Id be willing to bet if you asked him, hed tell ya it wasnt fun.
And unfortunately, most pools I ever skated had tight trannys. Of course, most were made for swimming. Still.....VERY fun.
