Actually, I'd beg to say that he is rather intelligent. He was a philosophy major before he started his dream. That doesn't make him a genius but it makes him more intelligent, than a just a philosopher, if you ask me. To GDarkstar 74, you, plain and simple, are just not experienced.
It doesn't matter what he majored in. The characteristics and predisposition of being a genius are more something genetic that you are born with than something which you attain through time and gaining knowledge. And by the way you're statement that I am "just not experienced" makes absolutely no sense and is neither a valid, nor sound point. Also, I'm quite sure that I know much more about making music, and music in general, than you do, just by the greatness that you attribute to Trey.
I would literally have to write a page worth of comments to express how ignorant you just made yourself sound. Your punctuation was on point though, great job! You obviously know nothing of music composition or the music theory involved to create a piece like one of Trey's originally composed pieces. He generates ideas used in classical music, arguably the most intelligent means of music. Just by looking at your name GDarkstar proves you are just here to flame.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the dead....but lets face it...as musicians they proved no feat that any person who likes the blues and experimented with hallucinogens could not have accomplished. Their movement is what made them, not their music. So for you to say to me, an adamant musician for 13+ years, that you know more about music based on things you don't directly know... is just false. Tell me... What is a Genius in your mind?
@Druss1586 i can't beleive you just said the dead "proved no feat that any person who likes the blues and experimented with hallucinogens could not have accomplished." Without the dead we would not have half of the music you listen to and love today, including phish. they were brilliant musicians and easily rank as high as phish in the quality of musicianship from all of the band members.
I am a musician and I've taken classes in music and jazz theory and also taught myself a lot. I can tell by the way that Trey is exalted in every one of your statements that you are not as well informed as you think.
I consider The GD and Phish to be equal in their musical skill and compositions, but Zappa is well above both of them, and he was a true genius. The amount of material that Trey has written in his life, Zappa would probably write in a year or two, and he was a much better guitarist than Trey is.
Judging people on the internet by their name? I created this account at least a few years ago and my musical preferences have changed a bit since then. Obviously I was into The Dead, and before that I was more into Phish. What the hell do you have to say about that? Oh do you mean I only commented to start shit with Phish fans? Well that's ridiculous, but thanks for assuming the worst in a person who you don't know.
Right on Druss......Trey has also collaborated with Paul, and made righteously a roughly 2 inch thick true hollow body famous....he designed his own guitar really.....like nothing commonly known! and guitarist are always put into pigeon holes "ohh he has a strat" "Ohh a les paul" ect....treys rig is state of the art, the music is complex, and the ideas are simple and fun.....bless the music, mean posts just make the true Phan only love them more.
hahaha, Some of them sure are. "it's a way of life." That is the most meaningless expression. And Phish is not the greatest band in the world, but they're pretty damn good.
phish embodies the true spirit of music... No labels can be put on it... just pure energy and passion. Trey Mike Paige and Jon have been an inspiration to my music since I was 12 years old... They will always be a true inspiration to musicians all over the world
probably one of the saddest vids of Phish on youtube. Thank goodness it wasn't the end, and possibly just the end of the beginning as Winston Churchill said which that dude tried to quote.
the curtain (with) came first then around the late 80's the dropped the with part and the same lick at the end of the curtain with is the same as the main rift lick
To the person who said that Drugs werent a problem then you obviously dont know that Trey got arrested in NY for driving under the influence and having several drugs on him.
WOW what a great video! Thank you for sharing it! IT brought back so many memories from tour, very uplifting! It was cool seeing Eliza dance around during such an emotional song. Maybe some day...
coventry was not the best musically becasue Phish music isn't supposed to be planned or full of expectation. The best Phish gigs wre the ones where nobody showed up in a small no named town.
even Jerry admitted that the Dead played horribly when big shows came around.
Just becasue it was the last show, doesn't mean it had to be the best musically...have you ever played an instrument? You try and play a tight, flawless show with all that emotion running through you.
Why don't you tell me how you REALLY feel. Are you trying to say that drugs ruined Phish???? Before you call me names you might want to clarify your statement a little. Maybe you just didn't understand me. Drugs had NOTHING to do with Phish's breaking up. They've all been doing their own thing for decades, and drugs are a huge part of their culture and lifestyle. Don't call someone an idiot without backing it up with some sort of good reason.
Again, you are an idiot. I can not find the article, but an interview with Trey back in 2005 from the Albany Times Union, Trey flat out says that drugs broke the band up. Get your fucking facts straight.
If you can't find the article then don't waste my time. Besides, why are you obsessing over whether or not drugs broke Phish up? Their music is here to stay, and they created hundreds and hundreds of songs that most musicians could never hope to touch. ---even if drugs broke up Phish, they have a legacy that few bands can reach.
The article is not online anymore, but here is your proof:
Headline from phish(dot)net:
11/17/05 - Trey admits drugs broke up Phish
In a story in the Times Unioin, Trey says, among other things: "I thought it went without saying how deep into our scene hard drugs had gone. ... I always thought our scene was so transparent, that everybody knew everything. ... Once we let our guard down around 1998, the scene started to eat itself and there was a massive loss of perspective."
Drugs did bring phish down, but nowhere do they say it is THEIR drug use. it was the phans. people were dying at their shows and heroin was a HUGE problem on lots. it was no longer a nice friendly scene, and it was because of the majority (not all) phans lack of self control, tact, and lack of ability to NOT HURT OTHER PEOPLE OVER DRUGS!!!
Maybe I just happened to be on the side of the lot that never saw any heroin, but I never saw anything but tons of chronic, fungus and doses. X was definitely around, but I never saw much else. How could anyone even truly enjoy a Phish show on junk???? Psychedelics are made for Phish's music, and vice versa. When the hell did heroin even come into play????
Long live Phish....who cares about drugs....that's not what brought them down...drugs have been a part of their lives for years, and tons of other musical groups over the years. Sometimes drugs play a huge part in the success of musical groups..and sometimes it plays a part in the demise.
I am also from Seattle, so the goings on of Phish were not exactly headline news in the Pacific Northwest when I was a teenager; I did not even know who Phish was until I saw Trey do a show with Dave Matthews and Friends in early 2004.
I am bitter over the fact that my last chance to have ever seen them (Gorge 2003) had passed seven months prior.
I'm not. I saw Trey a while back and it was borderline life-changing. God only knows how much I would give to see Phish all together.
Fox2, I also heard, and subsequently fell in love with Phish in my late teenage years... although, I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was the drugs that dragged them down. I was lucky enough to see them 17 or 18 times, including Big Cypress and IT. Certainly the best live music I've ever heard. (Since then Radiohead is the only real challenge) Anyway, I don't think you can pin one reason for the end of such a monumental band.
I'm not saying that drugs were the only reason, although anyone who has listened to the Coventry tapes will probably agree that it was a big part of it. For Trey, anyway.
Of all the Phish members, I would say that Mike is the least likely to be a "cokehead". It's hard to know those details about anybody. Trey is the only member of the group that I could even hope to pin that on, though.......and I don't hope to pin it on him. Weed and some hallucinogens seem to be a big part of the music.......even if Trey supposedly got caught with heroin.
