  • I brought new lens but it sayes I have to remove the anti-static protection point... how do I do that???

  • I replaced my laser lens, now the disk drive won;'t spin, and I know I plugged everything back in, it accepts the game but does nto spin?

  • I tried this but it was hard and I broke one of the wires on accident so I had to buy a whole other wii And I"m not much of a handy man either.

  • Thank the Wii is fixed just in time for Christmas... the boys are VERY happy... Good Video

  • Is there a way to remove the solder without a soldering iron?

  • I found out the answer to my own question about removing the solder. The new Laser comes with two solder points, which prevent an electric charge (such as static electricity) from flowing through the cable. That protects the laser during shipping. But if you don't remove the solder, electricity is still blocked, so obviously the laser won't work until you remove the solder.

  • Very good, detailed tutorial, but WHY do you have to remove the solder points? You mention that they protect the laser from static, but then say to remove them. WHY? And why don't you add new solder once you remove the old?

And don't you risk damaging the ribbon cable this way?

  • @ChuckMcLaughlin1 did, he ever reply to that, because I was wondering the same thing?

  • @ChuckMcLaughlin1 I was wondering the same thing, did he ever answer you?

  • thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I hope this works. It seems a bit risky but im gonna try it out. ; )

  • @arjpat23 I did it and now the disk drive wont spin disk, and I know I plugged everything back, in, it accepts but does not spin.

  • Thumbs up if ur from charlie bit me!

  • thank you for this excellent video!!

  • works! 10$ worth of parts (amazon, laser sold by HDE). Tricky part is the soldering iron step, be careful. (i used a low wattage iron, as soon as it melted used a kleenex and tooth pick to wipe off the solder.

Disappointed it wouldn't work still! GOt read error. Was gonna trash it but decided to pop it open, open just the top of DVD Drive off using the 5 screws on top - gently moved the laser beam arm assy back and forth (seemed stuck or stiff). Anyway, that did the trick!! YAY!!!!

  • That was great all up till the point the screw on the white laser bracked stripped out. Bastards at Nintendo using shit screws. This is why Torx are used in real electronics. Have fun finding a replacement bracket, took me an hours of searching, 8 bucks shipped for this stupid thing.

  • IMMA CHARGIN MAH LAZER

  • yeeiii, this worked great for mee. now my wii works, and i can play black ops again. Thank you very much.

  • If you'd rather have a step-by-step tutorial with photos showing how to disassemble your Wii and how to replace your lens all in one tutorial, then check out ifixit.com.

  • @lighttrustx

To answer your question on the wii laser, yes my wii worked perfectly after replacing the laser!! Black ops and all my other games worked fine, and to this day they still do.

However, I would recommened copying black ops to a usb drive and playing the game that way. you wont need your laser anymore so no worries if it happens again! I did that, and I love it more than the disk!

  • Many thanks for this easy to follow video. I've just successfully replaced my Wii laser.

  • Yeah.... my wii laser burned out on me a week ago... still waiting on the parts to come. Happened during call of duty black ops, it gave me an error message said to turn wii of and remove disk. Anyway, this video was a big help thanks.

  • @H3ROBigG i was wondering, as my old wii broke from fail ops also, did your wii start working again after you added in the new laser? i want to fix it but im wondering if it'll be a waste of time or now

  • will the laser work even if you not solder the points?

  • Really helpfull vid ima do this in a couple of days but when u use the soldering iron do u have to put anything on the tip or you just heat the tip up and wipe it on those little metal things on the ribbon plz msg back

  • u can get a wii laser from amozon.com for as low as $13

  • the wires broke off!! and i don`t know what to do. can you help me

  • If you guys who are watching this video and need someone else to do it, then I can do it. I'm around the region of Memphis and Oxford, MS. It'll be cheaper for me to do if you already have the brand new laser on hand. Order your lasers off of ebay for like 12-15 bux from the USA sellers.

  • I found the tri wing screwdriver at nintendoscrewdriver(dot)com

They've got a couple to choose from and their shipping was really fast.

  • Its working fine now but i broke the little plastic piece that holds the top bar in, which holds the lens in place. Is this a problem?

  • That's scary to do...

  • The Real Question is, WILL IT BLEND?

  • hey do i really need to buy a new laser and if yes does it has to be a wii laser or can i use a dvd laser

  • Very helpful, I was able to replace my wii laser using this vid.

One tip for others - I found that it was easier to put the ribbon for the laser in when reassembling before you put the tape back on.

  • Its important when you desolder that point AFTER you have put and wired that laser in reader. I think thats why my first laser did broke.... Second one with careful installing worked like a new. Thanks for video!

  • Nice video dude! My Wii works but channels won't load. They throw up an "An error has occured" message and sometimes just give a black screen. They sometimes work and sometimes do not. Usually if I leave my Wii alone a couple months the channels start working again. Will replacing my laser fix my channel problem?

  • @BowserN64 That has nothing to do with a laser...

  • The installation went great. No problems. But when I turned on my Wii the screen was completely black. What happened?

  • @digipalmatt Hmm, maybe you did something worng. Or you bricked your wii

  • the laser i have only has 1 solor point thingys o-o instead of2

  • Excellent! This tutorial helped me fix my Wii!!

  • Awesome! I can't believe that I was able to do this! I thought I would have to send the Wii in for repair or buy a new one, then I found this. For only $15 I was able to buy a laser, and this video made it relatively easy to do. The only problems I had were due to insufficient tools. The seller I bought the laser from supplied the needed tri-tool, but I had trouble finding a philips screwdriver small enough, and a magnetic screwdriver would have been really helpful. Thanks so much for this!

  • The Real Question is, Will It Blend??

  • Thanks so much! You turned an average mom into a superhero! I'm proud of myself and my kids are totally excited!

The only thing that would have made this easier would be if you had included a step-by-step for the re-assembly...somehow I ended up with an extra screw...oh well...it still works!

  • @TheBaseball554 same exact thing that happened to me lol im so mad.

  • @TheBaseball554

im pissed dude. i was on 5th prestige..

  • Thank you "Call of duty Black ops" for ruining my laser

  • This was a great tutorial for me because my Wii lens broke and I had no idea how to open a Wii disk drive. I was scared I was going to break something but thanks to the guidance of this video, no problems. Thanks!

  • i hate it when people put ads in their videos.......

  • why go through all this trouble, just pay the 90$ and get nintendo to fix it you get a year warranty with it

  • Why must the solder points need to be removed

  • @itachimaster645 to make sure its never been used before and to let the information run through the ribbon

the solders stop static when replacing lasers

  • great vid m8!

@welshboi13 nae luck, all you need is the ps3 to fail and you've had a hat trick off console problems, ma 360 has had its passport stamped a few times.

Got coins to take out a mates wii this weekend, not sure if they'll be in the front or actually in the drive?

  • where did you get that exact screw driver? i really like it!

  • @TintProsMobile amazon you or if your lucky you can get it form a computer store.

  • ive noticed that a sertian generation(2008 generation) of wiis r having problems with reading mario smash bros brawl i think it might b that that generation was made wrong like defected or something but i have heard that cleaning or replacing the lens fixes that problem

  • but what do u do if u dont have the soldering iron and u dont want to buy it could u just use a hot knife???????

  • @kat199725 i used a hot knife instead of a soldering iron. i just placed a knife over the stove and waited about 20 seconds and then scrapped off the metal thing. when i put it back together it worked!!! great tutorial

  • @phatkhmai ooh dont scrape it off unless its a butter knife you risk damaging the lasers data ribbon if ur gonna use a knife lput it infront of the stove for about 1min and then press the solder but ur knife is now screwed

  • i was playing zombies on black ops and i got a message that said error please eject disc and turn of console. i did so and i figured out that the lens was burnt from over heating so we started to look for a new lens.

I found one on amazon.com for $13 and it cones with the tri-wing screwdriver. if anyone else experienced this message i suggest you go on that site and buy the laser! It works! then use this awsome vid to put it into the wii!

  • i was playing zombies on black ops and i got a message that said error please eject disc and turn of console. i did so and i figured out that the lens was burnt from over heating so we started to look for a new lens.

  • Awesome video thank you so much. I hate teying this kind of think without a tutorial.

  • No problem! Be sure to have a soldering iron, some very narrow tweezers, and some tiny screw drivers. Be VERY careful of the black plastic tabs. They break easily, but don't affect the functionality. Good luck!

  • Dude, you rock!!! I am 13yo and was about to get a new Wii because my old one started having the same problem that was detailed at techdodo.com. But instead, I just fixed it myself for $13 by following your tutorial on replacing the laser. I am so psyched!!! Thanks a MILLION!!!

  • @peachymomof3 where did you buy a new laser im looking to buy one but there coming up to almost 40 bucks :/

  • @victorcastro19 I purchased my laser at thegamersfix. com. It was only $13 free shipping, prompt shipping and works great so far. I did have to buy a special star screwdriver (had soldering iron and exacto knife), but I got one at Frys for less than $8.

  • @peachymomof3 thanks man you really helped!!

  • @victorcastro19 Sorry, got the screwdriver at Microcenter for a few bucks. Be sure to also have a set of very pointy tweezers.

  • my wii laser actully shoots out a lasre but i keep getting dres do i need a new lasre?

  • I hope I 'll never have to do this to my wii xs

  • good work, i think even I (a 13 year old dude whos good at these stuff )could do that

this would'nt be my first hardware modification anyway

  • I must of messed up some where, I tried replacing the lens and it still doesn't work. I might as well get a new system this christmas, thinking a 360.

  • Many thanks for this. New laser installed and Wii up and running again.

One word of warning - the plastic clip retaining the rod that the head slides along is very delicate - only bend it very gently to release the rod.

Am I right in thinking the main reason that the laser fails is wear to the ribbon cable? Mine had distinct wear marks on it and I can't help thinking that is the weak point rather than the laser itself.

  • do you have to have a soldering iron cant you use something hot.

  • Thank you, this was very helpful.

  • if i do this will it fix the disc read error.also will i lose all my data cos i got the homebrew channel and stuff

  • @walcottisdaman no you won'tlost ANY data, the thing your replacing doesn't contain any

  • i have done everything in the video i have try two new laser and both have not fixed the problem can same one help to tell me if there is a another problem that could be wrong

  • @stewhalsall86 what is your problem?

  • what causes these lalers to not work properly anyways?isent the wii a well built system?

  • @dmoneyxd the laser wearing out(being overused) ex: making it read low quality discs ,that wears it out

  • great help so far, but im stuck on the part at 1:09 where you take off the second cable... plz help!

  • @zephan12

    never mind ^.^

brute force does it again :D i just pulled a bit and it came out. thanks

  • Unbelievable. I do all this and now I can't undo the goddamn final screw because it's too fucking small.

  • i tried and i failed, discs don't spin at all anymore! know a solution?

  • @mudassirul omg... i tried and replaced laser and the disc stops spinning right away =( =( did you solve it ? ANYONE HELP??

  • @Janezk7 I've given up trying an am trying to replace the whole drive but i'm having trouble getting one (don't buy it off clickshop!!), hopefully I'll be getting one next week

  • The plastic tab 3.46 in my drive had snapped off. Is this fixable or do I need to replace the whole drive?

  • why do the solder points need to be removed?

  • @mudassirul

    that's what i'd like to know. :/

  • OMG PLEASE HELP!! i followed your tutorial to replace my wii laser and now it's worse than it was before. now it doesn't read any disc at all and gives me the "unable to read disc error" what did i do wrong?!!?!

  • My wii laser is just out of place any idea on how to realign it?

  • what is the color of the laser when the wii is on

  • @andrewy23 since it's dvd, i'm pretty sure it's red

  • I should advise you that you should update your Wii replacement laser to repair compatibility with Super Smash Bros. Brawl for certain Wiis that couldn't play it. Do you agree?

  • Also, I replaced my Wii Laser because my old laser cannot play Super Smash Bros. Brawl. And once I replaced it, Brawl works again. Like Magic!

  • Maybe pay more attention or actually take a look at a Wii Drive. The plastic clips are PLASTIC CLIPS. The electronics tweezers that we use are METAL TWEEZERS that can also be referred to as FORCEPS.

  • Just finished repairing my kids' Wii, thanks to your video! This fixed the disk read errors!

  • I'm sure a lot of you destroyed your lasers pirating games. To save yourself the trouble, just get USB Loader GX working on your wii so you can load your games from your HDD. I just resurrected my old Wii using the Loader instead of the drive and bought a separate modded wii altogether so I don't have to worry about hurting it with mistakes.

  • Just get a new drive at ebay...

  • I replaced my wii laser following your guide (which was very informative!). I no longer get the "an error has occured. please eject the disc and reset" error. Unfortunately, now the wii makes clicking noises and says that it's unable to read any discs (though through the disc channel, instead of old error). Is the drive or laser out of alignment?

  • I opened up the Wii again to see better what was going on, and it looks like the disc is failing to even spin up. I can see a red spot where the laser is trying to read, but the disc never starts spinning. Hmm... bad motor? fuse? resistor? The saga continues...

  • do you have to use the solder?

  • Ive just replaced a wii's laser, and you NEED to use the solder.

If you dont (as i), the wii will receive the disk, spin it for about a second, and then throw an error.

I remember reading about that solder point, and came back to see the video. Used the solder to take it off... done. It is working.

    Greetings.

  • Crank that Solder Boy!

  • this tutorial could come in handy. my wii laser is broke and we going to buy a new laser and DIY it instead of sending 2 nintendo and paying £70

  • can we plz see it working again?

  • i need someone around LA to fix it for me cause i aint even gonna try. thats how i fucked up my 360 elite :(.

  • what error were yall gettin before u actually replaced the laser? was it the unable to read disc one?

  • urm well it was making some nasty noises and sometimes nothing would happen but the disc just wouldnt read and sometimes the screen went black and said there was an error reading the disc, i cant remember excactly what it said but it was along those lines hope i helped :)

  • yea thanks to this video im back playin call of duty again thank you so much

  • hey what error were u gettin before replacing the laser?

  • very good vid..thanks

  • thank you so much for this im going to fix my wii this weekend so i can play it while my xbox is gettin repaired :)
