Not necessarily. This town/village is famous for its symbiotic relationship with local hyena packs, including regularly feeding them (search for "hyena men"). They've been doing this for generations, and by this point they consider the village their "hunting grounds," to the point of guarding it against other predators. It's possible this hyena was just bored, and decided to go for a mid-day stroll. :)

@machicniii No they are not. Hyenas are more feline than canine. For many years scientists were puzzle what hyenas really were. Then, it was discovered that they are not dogs, nor cats, but have feline genes in them. But they are not canines and not related to dogs.
There are many very powerful dog breeds very capable of killing a hyena....Have you seen a 200+ agressive Mastiff....It will tear apart anything...2 or 3 would kill a male lion.....so when you make a statemend about dog vs a hyena it really depends on which dog.

@b16sol94 I don't think so. I have a German Shepherd, properly trained as a police/military dog with bite training, even they wouldn't be a match. A regular mastiff would get his ass kicked. Now if you're talking a group of mastiffs, or a group of German Shepherds against one hyena, then sure, but even then some of the dogs would get killed.
@BlackATTAX It's not all jaw strength. Hyenas are selected to survive in their environment. Mastiffs were selected to grab and hold down larger animals, such as bears, or bulls. Or they were used for fighting other dogs. They had to be strong, yet nimble for their size. If they didn't get out of the way then they died. They've been bred to fight.
So don't automatically assume you're right and call the guy dumb. These dogs were selected over time to fight other animals.

I'm sure Mastiffs are tough for a dog breed, but I find a dog taking down a full grown hyena inconceivable, even laughable. But I guess we'll never actually know until a mastiff gets it's faced ripped off by the jaws of a hyena.

it's very difficult. i had a rottweiler, sadly it died at the ripe age of 14 years old. when he was about 6 or 7, he was strong, about 125 pounds. it is very difficult for an unarmed human to fight with this type of dog. an angry rottweiler has the strongest jaws of domestic canines (328 PSI).
the only chance you have of warding off the dog will be to poke its eyes, which will be hard as well- it will be jerking its head around as it bites. you will not come out of it uninjured.
compared to hyenas??? no. no domestic dog comes even close to the jaw strength of a hyena. hyenas have stronger jaws than lions and tigers by about 300 psi. (600-700 for lions, tigers respectively, 900-1000 psi for hyenas). rottweilers measured at 328 psi. even if the gulldog has a stronger jaw than the rottie, it wouldn't be near 400 psi, based on skull size, body weight, muscle composition, etc.

@SAMAND33 Not really the 'only dogs' that can challenge those predators. Karelian bear dogs are used everyday in places like Alaska against polar bears, grizzly bears, and blackbears. There are many very powerful dog breeds very capable of killing a hyena....Have you seen a 200+ agressive Mastiff....It will tear apart anything...2 or 3 would kill a male lion.....so when you make a statemend about dog vs a hyena it really depends on which dog.

@2010anyway no.. even this here small male spotted Hyena would tear appart any dog... a dog has a biting force of 100-300 lbs of pressure... a Hyena has 1000 lbs of pressure... 2nd strongest in the world... you throw a dog at a Hyena and it will make only LUNCH out of it... not to mention Hyenas have a much better build, cardio & pain tolerance.....
Now think a Female Spotted Hyena would do against a dog, they are the most agressive and they are the biggest and strongest of all....

Hyena weighs in at 150 to 170 pounds and has a bone crunching bite.They are both strong but hyena's very rarley attack another predator larger than its self. I love Hyena's but if there's only one than its going to lose.

@legocastle23 i can not give you any evidence,but its just plain obvious a wild hyena is the superiour animal to any domesticaited dog(including war dogs) they are a wild apex predator ffs,ive seen clips of them being mauled by lionesses and just getting up and running off,that hyena on this clip is a small one,go watch the clip hyena man and you will see the sheer size of there neck mouth and teeth,their mouths are like fuckin bear trap and they absorb damage like tanks.

@b16sol94 I don't think so. I have a German Shepherd, properly trained as a police/military dog with bite training, even they wouldn't be a match. A regular mastiff would get his ass kicked. Now if you're talking a group of mastiffs, or a group of German Shepherds against one hyena, then sure, but even then some of the dogs would get killed.

@BlackATTAX It's not all jaw strength. Hyenas are selected to survive in their environment. Mastiffs were selected to grab and hold down larger animals, such as bears, or bulls. Or they were used for fighting other dogs. They had to be strong, yet nimble for their size. If they didn't get out of the way then they died. They've been bred to fight.
So don't automatically assume you're right and call the guy dumb. These dogs were selected over time to fight other animals.

@FeralTyneMan Show me one example of a dog taking down a bull or a bear lmao. I can show you plenty examples of a single heyena taking down a full grown wildebeest bull well over twice it's size. I'm sure Mastiffs are tough for a dog breed, but I find a dog taking down a full grown hyena inconceivable, even laughable. But I guess we'll never actually know until a mastiff gets it's faced ripped off by the jaws of a hyena.

Also, have you never heard of bear baiting or bull baiting? Dogs were bred for centuries, including the Mastiff for this specifically so it's quite relevant. Wildebeast are prey.

Mastiffs are pretty big dogs, again, it's not all jaw strengh. A hyena might have a stronger bit than a lion, still I've seen plenty of lions kill Hyenas.
Also, your example can be mirrored by a single Canadian wolf taking down a buffalo. The recent attenborough documentary showed.

Whereas a mastiff dog doesn't have either advantage over a spotted hyena. It's not all jaw strength? So what advantage does the Mastiff hold over the Hyena? Speed? no. Muscle mass? no. Intelligence? debatable i suppose but I'd say no. I cant think of 1 advantage a mastiff holds over a spotted hyena. but I guess it's not all about advantages either? lulz

@EdudLufetips plenty of dogs have a bite force of over 400 the kangal has the bite force of 700 pounds, that's the bite of an African lion... There are even videos of it. Some dogs were used to HUNT lion bear and bull, not bait. And German sheps. Could fend off mountain lion bears and wolves, look up German shepherd and click on the breed all about it... The English mastiff has a bite of 501 that was on nat geo. There is also a vid wi military dogs, that can. Have 700 psi.

Watch from 0:21 on and you'll see the hyena make a sudden movement that startles all the dogs quite violently. Despite the apparent harmony amongst the hyena and dogs, the latter are very, very wary of it and know exactly what's it capable of.

it's very difficult. i had a rottweiler, sadly it died at the ripe age of 14 years old. when he was about 6 or 7, he was strong, about 125 pounds. it is very difficult for an unarmed human to fight with this type of dog. an angry rottweiler has the strongest jaws of domestic canines (328 PSI).
the only chance you have of warding off the dog will be to poke its eyes, which will be hard as well- it will be jerking its head around as it bites. you will not come out of it uninjured.

compared to hyenas??? no. no domestic dog comes even close to the jaw strength of a hyena. hyenas have stronger jaws than lions and tigers by about 300 psi. (600-700 for lions, tigers respectively, 900-1000 psi for hyenas). rottweilers measured at 328 psi. even if the gulldog has a stronger jaw than the rottie, it wouldn't be near 400 psi, based on skull size, body weight, muscle composition, etc.

@SAMAND33 Not really the 'only dogs' that can challenge those predators. Karelian bear dogs are used everyday in places like Alaska against polar bears, grizzly bears, and blackbears. Various shepherd breeds protect against wolves and other predators as well and have so far a long time (which is what they were bred for). EdudLufetips is correct about the bite strength as well.
