Steven Wilson has a reputation for "taking" things from other people. Some people have a hard time admitting that. And because of that history, I don't see Time Flies as a "tribute". Not only does it sound completely like the Animals album, but he gives absolutely no credit to Pink Floyd. Steven Wilson is not a creative person.
@Ecrusix your hilarious. honestly. fuck off. he has more ceativity in his pinkie toe than you have in your entire body. EVERYONE without knowing it, steals melodic ideas from music they've heard, and they build upon it, thats how music EVOLVES.
@ben10sk8r I'm sorry to have offended you (I obviously have) Ben10 skater. I have removed the comment of my opinion on Time Flies for I only see more incoming useless hate speech from offended youtubers. Steven WIlson HAS made many good pieces. And your comment on the evolution of music I very much agree with (but not in this case).
@legendofzelda101 Trust me. When you write, record, produce, mix, and perform the same songs over and over again, it gets to seem meaningless quicker than you might think. I do the same. I've yet to upload it, but my song Hindsight is nearly as emotional as Time Flies. The emotion lasted the first week of writing/recording. It's pretty much nothing but a good song now.
I absolutely feel where Steven is coming from in here. When we are children, we are mostly unaware of our mortality and as a consequence, life seems like absolute paradise and risks are alot easier to take. As we age, however, the grim reality of life sets in and the moment we learn that someday we are going to die is the moment time starts flying by significantly faster than when we were younger.
he is totally writing a new song in his mind as he talks...as he talks about summer you can just see the gears turning and him going "hmmm childhood memories...i can write about that..."
What I really think is that this song is inspired from DOGS of PINIK FLOYD, in the scepticism and emotion feelingless of some notes, and even in some parts of the solo....
For lots of entertaining videos, claymations, and good original music, please check out The Rupert Selection's channel at RupertTV! We're a progressive rock band from Massachusetts.
This is such a wonderful song. I saw them live in Monterrey, Mexico a month ago. I was a little late to the concert because I had to rush out of my job, but when I walked into the venue, just 15, 20 minutes into the concert, they were playing this song. It was fucking magical, I tell you! And the video art behind the Willson and gang was fantastic!
Hahaha, my mom walked in on my when I was watching this and thought it was a webcam conversation. She looked at me and said "Do you know this boy?" lol
It sounds like sheep, the rhytm guitar and also the solo, but it's a great song. The live version is more dark, especially the second part, this makes the song more interesting. The lyric is about the time, a main theme of dark side of the moon. I love PT, pink floyd roots, modern sound and lyrics.
Wow. what a tribute to the Animals album. I can hear strains of all the 3 epics: Dogs, Pigs and Sheep, but it's so originally treated. I live in India and I've never had the privilege of seeing my favourite band, Pink Floyd, live. And missing Roger Waters, when he played in Mumbai is probably the greatest regret of my life. I hope to see porcupine tree in December, when they come here, and it just might be the closest I'm ever going to get to my idols. Steven is the true heir to Roger's throne.
I can't tell you how literally pissed off some people were when I pointed out the obvious 'Animals' inspiration to them. I'm glad somebody else embraces it as a good thing. People acted as if I were trying to belittle PT because I noticed the influence. It wasn't that at all.
Animals is one of my favourite albums. I do see some similarities. But I don't really think it cheapens the PT song. Just look at RATM's "Wake Up" > Its a direct lift from Led Zeppelin's Kashmir but it is in fact a different song. And it rocks.
My best friend turned me on to PT and I thank him all the time for it! Seen them 3 times so far. Just saw The Incident Concert in Philly Sept. 26th. This album, the first disc especially, kicks ass!! I can`t stop listening to it. Some of the greatest music ever...
Once again another genius writes a remarkable peice on the subject of time and the human struggle to figure out harness time. PT follow in the footsteps of the previus masters like Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, and other greats.
must be sad to never want to hear your music again.. when so many others really enjoy it. I understand the worthwhile experience of laying something down over and over and it becoming "stale" .. in a sense.. Steven is a martyr to his music right?
when we are children we live in the "now". when we live in the "now" time ceases to exist, as we grow older the concept of time starts to run our lives as we look to the future. learn to live "now" and time will once again cease.
we already are living now, the future is our imagination 'in' the now. Time just doesnt exist full stop, even when we arent in the now, we actually are.
but if time doesnt exist, what makes half an hour and an hour different? i better stop tryin to understand this
This is going to be one fantastic weekend up in LA: PTree @ Club Nokia Saturday night, and then my electronic music idol BRIAN ENO Sunday night @ the Richard & Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center. Life just doesn't get much sweeter than this.

I hate listening to him, because I start loving him. I don't wanna love him. Only his music. But I can't do anything about this... I'm so unhappy lady :)))))))))))))))) (joke)
This almost seems deliberate... that is, it almost fools you into thinking you are back listening to the animals release, but then you realize, again, that it's something new, because time flies
It's brilliant how little he speaks of his work, as if it's nothing for him to write, whereas the rest of us tear our hair out to write anything even moderately close to as incredible :) haha
Time Flies modern version of Dogs from Pink Floyd's Animals. Time Flies is an amazing track.
