@dacoolest1 kevin i didnt mean to disrespect you i was letting people know when they could see the welding thanks for uploading the video i did enjoy it
When butting two plates you really should leave a gap just wider than the filler wire then root weld into the gap. Then you weld a cap into the prepared V as a second or more passes. As he says he is not been trained as a welder but he is still good with a tig torch.
@kevincaron Great idea with the mask bib. Don't want to sound like some 'know it all', but you need to be protecting your arms from those UV rays as well. They can be nasty, those rays, especially if you're welding on a fairly regular basis.Long sleeves, good idea. Short sleeves, not a good idea. Nice videos, though. Take care.

@hiOctane400 My first time with a welder was in high school. Way back in 1975 or 76 so I was 15 or 16. . I had a whole two weeks of welding class. I didn't get to use a welder again until 1978 in the Navy. That lasted maybe 2 or 3 hours. I made my own car (lots of welding for the frame and body) in the mid to late 80s. I picked up the welder again around 2004 for my art work and went pro. January 1 of 2006. I taught myself MIG and TIG welding.

@Breannasue1012 Keeping in mind that I am not certified at any type of welding, here is the advice I can offer you. Practice, practice and more practice. The more helmet time you get the better you become. Slow down and pay attention to your welding. Keep asking questions. If you don't understand how to make "that" weld, find someone who does and ask.
Oh yeah, and watch the rest of my videos. If I can't answer your question I am sure someone else here can.
how does tig welding compare to stick welding (like using the 6011 electrodes) is it easier or harder. I am asking cause ive never doone it before but i am very good at stick welding makes mig welding a breeze.
@memodedonachuy Personally I think that TIG is easier than stick welding. It is cleaner, more versatile, less smoke and quieter than stick. It is the first machine I will reach for when I have any type of welding to do. There are two drawbacks to TIG over stick. One, it likes only CLEAN metal to weld, where stick really does not care. Two, TIG hates the wind, it like to be inside, where stick is at home anywhere.
thanks kevin i getting the hang of the TIG welder now - this metal fusing is by far the best glue i ever used! I understand why welders cover up with such substantial clothes (I got a little sunburnt on the first day oops ) - i'll be covering up too from now on. Thanks for uploading these vids brother, i made enough money to pay for my machine on the last job.
@woodrat123 Congrats on getting a pay check for your work. It's always great to have some new toys/tools to work with. Have fun with your work and check back when you can.
Don't forget to stop by my site and check out the rest of my work.
@overr8ted2 You should check the specs. on your welder for proper gas flow for the work you are doing, and yes it does matter how hot the welder is set or the thickness of the metal. That will change from one piece of steel to the next.
backtobasics- um the "engineers" that built the colapsable freeway in California were profetional trained. The IDIOTS in the FBI are profetionaly trained. Now we know what happened to the freeway, with cars on it, and that type of structure is no good in eathquake prone areas. And we know what happened in 2001 when the FBI was on the job. So tell me bonehead what does a piece of paper meen?? It's a bunch of BS. Keep it coming Kevin.
I just read a couple of negative comments on here so I had to take the time to say thank you for making these videos. I have not welded anything since ag class 25 yrs ago, but I am building a small shop on my place and have been looking for tips and videos on welding. Just want to say thank you for taking the time to do this.
@stellbo You are welcome Sir. I have fun making these videos. Just keep in mind that I am self-taught and not certified. Everything I talk about works for me, be it right or wrong. Check back often, I update about once a week. If you get the chance stop by my website and check out the rest of my work. Lots more to see over there.
One of my most useful tools is a set of 4 45/90 magnets, LOL it is amazing to see what a magnetic field will do to an arc too, everyone should try it some time just for a laugh.
@mozzmann First time I saw the arc bend like that I could not believe it. I stopped and tried to figure out what I was doing wrong. Checked the machine settings and everything. Finally dawned on me what was going on so I had to play with it for a little while just to get used to the effect. Fun to watch but sure makes a mess of the weld.
good demonstration, but for welding that steel i would use arc welding, because it's a lot cheaper and if you use correct electrodes also very strong. I use tig welding only for thin metal.
@backtobasics200 I am sure everyone here is waiting for your videos. Please let us know when we can come to your site and learn from all your years of experience.
@woodrat123 Oh Right!! Welcome to the club. Now comes the fun part, learning all the different ways that new toy/tool will work. As for the thickest plate you can do.. in my untrained and not certified opinion you should be able to do 1/4 to 3/8th plate in one pass. (Yes, I am guessing here) Any thicker you will need two or more passes for a good weld.
What say the rest of you on that? 1/4 to 3/8 sound about right?
Congrats my friend.. now get to work and make me something!
@backtobasics200 As soon as some of the "Experts" step up and post some helpful videos I will gladly crush my camera and sit in the back of the class. I do not do this for money or ego. I do this because I have been asked by people just like you. I do not pretend to have all the answers or even understand the questions.
I am sure everyone else here understands that I am learning as I go just like they are.
how can you see that the bottom of the root pass is melting when the rod is sitting on top? I have always struck an arc, formed a puddle that starts to recess and penetrate, then feed wire into the puddle until you reach the desired bead height. Have you ever cut these apart or purposely broken any? I don"t mean to be on your back but i've learned differently. it appears to be a nice bead. if you push the wire then you could easily weld this in a single pass.
@thedirtymammal Well, like I said in the video. I am self-taught and not certified. If you were lucky enough to get some classes on this you are one up on me. I just read it online and took at stab at doing it. I am sure I would never pass a test on anything I do here.
To answer the other part, no I have never done any destruction test on my welds. I do not build bridges just art.
@wildcat666777 These are just magnets from Harbor Freight. They cost all of about $5.00 each. I used the TIG to tack it because that was the machine I was going to weld with. The MIG was still in the tool room taking a nap.
Well, I'm sure I could put something together about that. Give me a few days and I will give it a shot. Just remember, I am not certified and I am self-taught. If you are looking for "real" tech help I am not your best bet.
G 3 or a 3 G lol. Its 3 G. Any strucural plate test would be ran with stick or flux core. It would also be open root or have a backing plate. None of which you have. I dont know of any plate tests that allow you to run a pass up the back side. I wont slag you too much, at the end you do state you're self taught and not a certified welder. Oh BTW learn to walk the cup you wont dip your tungsten as much then....
hi kevin.... i am venu from India i would like to thank u becauseyour posting such a good videos those really helped me a lot can you able to post some videos about how to control finger tips in tig weldin any valuable information about understanding drawings

It is the first machine I will reach for when I have any type of welding to do. There are two drawbacks to TIG over stick. One, it likes only CLEAN metal to weld, where stick really does not care. Two, TIG hates the wind, it like to be inside, where stick is at home anywhere.
Thanks for posting.

thanks kevin i getting the hang of the TIG welder now - this metal fusing is by far the best glue i ever used! I understand why welders cover up with such substantial clothes (I got a little sunburnt on the first day oops ) - i'll be covering up too from now on. Thanks for uploading these vids brother, i made enough money to pay for my machine on the last job.
Best wishes from the UK

how much gas should you be using does it matter how thick the metal or how hot you have the welder?
overr8ted2 1 year ago

Just want to say thank you for taking the time to do this.
stellbo 1 year ago
@stellbo You are welcome Sir. I have fun making these videos. Just keep in mind that I am self-taught and not certified. Everything I talk about works for me, be it right or wrong. Check back often, I update about once a week. If you get the chance stop by my website and check out the rest of my work. Lots more to see over there.

One of my most useful tools is a set of 4 45/90 magnets, LOL it is amazing to see what a magnetic field will do to an arc too, everyone should try it some time just for a laugh.
mozzmann 1 year ago
@mozzmann First time I saw the arc bend like that I could not believe it. I stopped and tried to figure out what I was doing wrong. Checked the machine settings and everything. Finally dawned on me what was going on so I had to play with it for a little while just to get used to the effect. Fun to watch but sure makes a mess of the weld.
kevincaron 1 year ago
@kevincaron
Those magnets are supposed to be used only to make your tack welds. Trying to make a complete weld while it is sitting on the magnets is ridiculous.
backtobasics200 1 year ago
good demonstration, but for welding that steel i would use arc welding, because it's a lot cheaper and if you use correct electrodes also very strong. I use tig welding only for thin metal.
partyboy93 1 year ago
@partyboy93 Thanks for posting. Always nice to get another point of view.
kevincaron 1 year ago
@partyboy93
TIG welding IS arc welding. What do you think is coming off of the tungsten?
What you meant to say was to suggest GMAW/FCAW or SMAW.
backtobasics200 1 year ago
@backtobasics200 I am sure everyone here is waiting for your videos. Please let us know when we can come to your site and learn from all your years of experience.
kevincaron 1 year ago
@backtobasics200
SMAW is also known as MMA and ARC welding (at least in europe).

thanks man, i got a tig today 130 amp what would be the max plate i should tackle with this? Any tips would be great.
Enjpying your video's thanks for uploading these your a star!

woodrat123 1 year ago

Thank you for posting your opinion.

@hangoutsumtime Harbor Fright?? No this is a Miller Syncrowave® 200. Really a fine machine. More than I will ever use.
Thanks for posting.

@kevincaron Why is TIG stronger?
weldhawk1 1 year ago
how can you see that the bottom of the root pass is melting when the rod is sitting on top? I have always struck an arc, formed a puddle that starts to recess and penetrate, then feed wire into the puddle until you reach the desired bead height. Have you ever cut these apart or purposely broken any? I don"t mean to be on your back but i've learned differently. it appears to be a nice bead. if you push the wire then you could easily weld this in a single pass.
thedirtymammal 1 year ago
@thedirtymammal Well, like I said in the video. I am self-taught and not certified. If you were lucky enough to get some classes on this you are one up on me. I just read it online and took at stab at doing it. I am sure I would never pass a test on anything I do here.
To answer the other part, no I have never done any destruction test on my welds. I do not build bridges just art.
Thanks for posting.

How can your magnets be so powerful? All the ones I have to use in my schools shop and weaker than a flat fridge magnet.
And, you tacked it with a TiG? why not the MiG?
wildcat666777 1 year ago
@wildcat666777 damn... nvm that last bit about tacking. Didn't read the description.
wildcat666777 1 year ago
@wildcat666777 These are just magnets from Harbor Freight. They cost all of about $5.00 each. I used the TIG to tack it because that was the machine I was going to weld with. The MIG was still in the tool room taking a nap.
kevincaron 1 year ago
@kevincaron Harbor Freight? I take it that it's not a Northern Ontario franchise.
And it's nice to know I am not the only one who gives their MIG a nap.
As well, if you have an GMAW machine, try the following.
2 6"x4"x3/8" Checker Plate with a 45degree angle on one of the 6"sides.
Make a root pass with an e6010.
Chip the slag, do not cool it.
Fill in the rest of the gap with an e7018.
Chip the slag, cool it off.
As well, make a video of this.
This is what I have to do to my welders ticket here.
wildcat666777 1 year ago
@wildcat666777 Stick welding??!! You still use stick up there??
I am joking!!!
Thanks for the tips! I will give it a try the next time I have a chance.
Thanks for posting.
kevincaron 1 year ago
@kevincaron Actually, it's more common in Canada, seems it's hotter or something, have no clue why.
I learned on a stick, using e6010..

Newfoundlander86 2 years ago
Would you please explain what you mean by "Walk the cup"? We are all trying to learn here.
kevincaron 2 years ago
@Newfoundlander86 any real welder like yourself must have better things to do than critisize self-taught people on youtube? :p
32mcs 1 year ago

Very good kevin; Half the thickness of the metal is what you want your gap to be.
I like that new helmet you got too, I got a new helmet as well, a Speedglass 9100x, and I love it.
james007ray 2 years ago
Yeah, I am not has dumb as I look. Also not as smart as I let on.
Good luck with the Speedglass. I had one and the cartridge died twice in a few months. They replaced it the first time and I took a hammer to it the second.
kevincaron 2 years ago
Nicely done. New helmet?
VisorBlue 2 years ago
Thanks! Yeah, had to get a new helmet. The head strap died and no one carries replacements for HF stuff.
Keep that in mind when buying anything there.
