Well … with so many microphones and cameras all over the place (covert and public), I'm surprised they haven't sent bills to everyone who's ever played music for any and every congregation of two or more individuals.
BTW, I researched Fair Use more closely, and noticed something: Fair Use only applies to certain uses, such as parody, educational purposes, and commentary.
However, it ONLY allows the use of PORTIONS of the copyrighted work. I've seen videos (such as the 2nd part of the Toasty 2 video - yeah, that's a great video, but it uses the entire "Eye of the Tiger" song, which as I understand, goes against fair use policy.
I can't post my source here (YouTube doesn't allow posting URLs in the
comments), but it's easily searchable on Google. You type in Fair Use, and you get a site from Stanford University.
Now I'm wondering - what's the fuss REALLY about, because these videos that contain entire songs can't really claim Fair Use protection (as I understand it.) Is it more because the entire audio clip is erased as a result?
And if I'm wrong about this, please enlighten me as well. :)
If WMG is so worried about making a few extra bucks, why not sell songs for internet use? I would be happy if I could buy a song and use it on youtube, even if I have to pay, say, 3$ for it? This is ridiculous.
Youtube was originally meant for fun. This copyright crap is getting out of hand.
It's actually been getting worse lately, which leads me to think that YT is reaching its boiling point. We're not going to stop using the songs we want to use, and they can't get rid of us, there's too many. Eventually they'll have to cave.
Also I can't stand how Sony is making money off my videos. One of them even got a chance to make money for me, but I was rejected. What I find a month later? An ad for very low quality music I recorded from my camera 2 years ago. That and about 10 other videos out of 63. People arn't watching my videos becuase of the copyrighted music, but for the story. The comments on some of my videos say, great story, not music.
I think that eventually people will stop uploading any videos with songs in which means that people will actually buy less songs because they have never heard of the artist or whatever and wmg will lose a lot of money because they being too strict with copyright laws now
I agree that people uploading albums on there own is copyright but making a funny cat slideshow with "stray cat strut" over the top and having it removed a week later is pointless.

Music by ASCAP, and some other major labels is covered by existing agreements, and bands can play their music in clubs, but the club owner has to pay a flat royalty fee. That system only applies to certain labels who agreed to it. (It's weird that the band doesn't have to pay, but the owner is the one who is liable).

Personally there is a lot of music that i find and buy from seeing/heaing it on youtube, many of whom i would have never heard of if NOT for youtube. I do not listen to the radio andI do not have cable TV. If not for Internet I would never find most of the stuff I buy. I find it so STUPID these companies do this, I for one refuse to buy any music from companies that I find have muted/removed all their artist's music from youtube. So, their "plan" has the opposite effect than what they intend.

WMG/Viacom or whatever should just post an AD next to the video saying that the music belongs to them and the add includes a link to itunes so you can get it. Works out for both parties.

The people who post music and videos on YouTube, 90% of the time, do so without the permission of the band, and this counts as COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. You aren't going to be sued for singing "Happy Birthday", but you can be if you sing a song that is copyrighted - without owning the media first or having permission from the song's owners, in this case, it is WMG.
i got my other accounts closed so i lost tons of videos. yeah, legally wmg can take the vids away, but they dont get it. if you like a song thats on a movie, you might write it down, add it on playlist, buy the cd, etc. youtube is a better music search engine than playlist to be honest. and if you like the music, you might buy it, and they make money. theyre stupid.
WMG has every right to request that their music be removed from Youtube's videos, and they have every right to sue Youtube if they don't get removed. Would you rather have a couple videos lose their audio, or would you rather have Youtube be shut down because they can't pay to fight lawsuits?

BTW, I researched Fair Use more closely, and noticed something: Fair Use only applies to certain uses, such as parody, educational purposes, and commentary.
However, it ONLY allows the use of PORTIONS of the copyrighted work. I've seen videos (such as the 2nd part of the Toasty 2 video - yeah, that's a great video, but it uses the entire "Eye of the Tiger" song, which as I understand, goes against fair use policy.

Now I'm wondering - what's the fuss REALLY about, because these videos that contain entire songs can't really claim Fair Use protection (as I understand it.) Is it more because the entire audio clip is erased as a result?
And if I'm wrong about this, please enlighten me as well. :)

Also I can't stand how Sony is making money off my videos. One of them even got a chance to make money for me, but I was rejected. What I find a month later? An ad for very low quality music I recorded from my camera 2 years ago. That and about 10 other videos out of 63. People arn't watching my videos becuase of the copyrighted music, but for the story. The comments on some of my videos say, great story, not music.

If I wrote an original song and someone used it in public without my permission, then I'd sue them for a copyright violation and make them pay me.
This belief in entitlement 'merely' because someone wants something makes no sense. I, for one, believe that intellectual property law in the U.S. makes sense. Not all artists are signed with record companies, and careers can be ruined when an artist has to take a day job because they're starving because nobody pay them for what THEY created.

Music by ASCAP, and some other major labels is covered by existing agreements, and bands can play their music in clubs, but the club owner has to pay a flat royalty fee. That system only applies to certain labels who agreed to it. (It's weird that the band doesn't have to pay, but the owner is the one who is liable).

Another interesting fact is that in the early 80s, a group of talented young people made a couple of very short animations for a convention in Osaka, Japan called Daicon. The animations showed a huge cast of sci-fi and comic characters ranging from Star Wars to Godzilla to Alien to Marvel super heros. Not only were many copyrighted characters shown in this animation, but one of these used the song Twilight by E.L.O. for it's music.

Personally there is a lot of music that i find and buy from seeing/heaing it on youtube, many of whom i would have never heard of if NOT for youtube. I do not listen to the radio andI do not have cable TV. If not for Internet I would never find most of the stuff I buy. I find it so STUPID these companies do this, I for one refuse to buy any music from companies that I find have muted/removed all their artist's music from youtube. So, their "plan" has the opposite effect than what they intend.

The people who post music and videos on YouTube, 90% of the time, do so without the permission of the band, and this counts as COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. You aren't going to be sued for singing "Happy Birthday", but you can be if you sing a song that is copyrighted - without owning the media first or having permission from the song's owners, in this case, it is WMG.
