  • But @conanima88,

this recording has been beloved and "popular" for 3 generations of musicians--including hundreds of cellists. It just throbs with energy, passion and instinctive artistry. While other recording will be forgotten, this is definitive. And not bad for a 77 year old!

  • Concpt is so important that whoever has the best concept on any worthwhile subject owns it. And so I would give that honour so far as cellos go in the last 100 years or so, to Pablo Casals.

  • I have only this year heard Pablo Casals for the first time.Until then the only cellist I had ever heard get the acoustic efficiency out of a cello that normally only violinists and sometimes viola players get out wasNZ celllist Ross Poples who must have been inspired by Casals. In turn I was inspired in 1972 to found my tenor saxohone tone on Pople's sound. So, more likely than not, I really owe even more to Pablo Casals, without knowing it until now. Casals like J S Bach are resonsible f/stop.

  • Casals + Schumann = :D

  • Does anyone notice that he is making audible moans in this recording?

  • @Tryceattack He does so in a lot of his recordings, in fact he's considered quite a grunting old man in his later recordings. I don't know whether it's involuntary or not, but he was getting very old by this point, he was born in 1876.

  • His grandmother was Puerto Rican.

  • Este concierto de violonchelo de Schumman, mañana en Tenerife con nuestra Sinfónica

  • He was a musician. Such people are born once in 50 years.

  • Everything about this is amazing.

  • The master of them all.

  • Try DuPre before you say that!

  • bello

  • Why does it say "Pablo" in the title? That's not his real name.

  • @doumuu he was known as Pablo.. or are you just being a know-all because you know his name was Pau?

  • @doumuu If that's not his name, how come my cello technique book from 1922 has a preface written by a famous cellist who's name is signed "Pablo Casals"? *Queue Jeopardy theme*

  • @skyd171 Because somebody didn't do their research and didn't find out that even though he was being called "Pablo Casals", that was a spanish translation of his real catalan name: Pau Casals i Defilló.

  • @doumuu No, HE wrote the preface and SIGNED his name as Pablo Casals. Are you daft? How do these people access the internet?!

  • best Cellist I've ever heard he said as he got older and older he found out how much better he was as a very old man.....which is why he practiced 3 hours a day until he died.

  • Schumann would have loved this.

  • dikaiosyne9 his mother was a really beautifoul girl that was exiliated from Puerto Rico with his family to fight for the black men rights. Of course she had catalan parents and speaking the two tongues (spanish and català) fluently.

  • master

  • does anyone know if there is actual video footage of him performing this? either live or produced..

  • My favorite performance of Schumann cello concerto since 1988 when I listened it first time. Many thanks ConAnima88

  • That's Casals moaning... ;)

  • @ConAnima88 unique et tellement bouleversant...

  • Yes I have just discovered I have this in the long player Vynyl in excellent condition - a precious recording indeed. It is a wonderful interpretation from Casals I feel.

  • Between Pablo Casals and the Schumann- there is something beyond just music. A truly special connection, almost spiritual, is achieved.

  • @funnygrudge I'm sorry but why you contributes with his enemiens, to call him pablo? His Name was: PAU (Peace) Pau Casals. At the same way that Schumann it doesn't Chuman.

  • @Free4Catalonia La seva firma personal era Pablo, no Pau, ni tan sols Paz.

  • Quin gran artista! Tot ho entén i Tot ho expressa amb la seva veu, sense excessos. Quin doll de so tant ple de vida, quin sentit del ritme. Meravellós!

  • He was a political exiliated artist; please, do not contribute to the triumph, because of his own name, of the cultural genocide he always comdemned and fought against. His real first name, in catalan Pau, also means peace; Pablo doesnt mean anything. Thank you very much. Please, see too in Youtube: El discurs de Pau Casals or Pau Casals, the catalan courier.

  • @dikaiosyne9 In the description of the video is stated as Pau Casals, which I find appropriate. Imagine referring to the famous composer as Ludovico van Beethoven?

  • The great master Pau Casals would have never wanted his first name to be changed in Pablo. He always defended the rights of his nation, Catalonia, and amongst these, the linguistic rights, and his mother tongue, catalan. Please, if you really love his music, respect his memory and restaure here his real catalan first name: Pau Casals. [To be continued

  • wonder who put 4 stars for that beauty - well, somebody who doesn't have ears or brains. this is absolutely unbeatable

  • amazing and delightful...no kidding...

  • Amazing, delightful, such an artist, thank you very much for posting.

  • The Best!
