No the QE2 whistle starts at 0:33. The whistle you hear at 0:20 is from a smaller ship which saluted the QE2 as she arrived in port and wasn't in shot.
I wonder if they are right to retire QE2 in the present market. Where are the passengers going to come from for her large and less-than-good-looking new replacements?
Do you know if there are any large-scale QE2 plastic kits I could assemble?... the bigger the better. (I liked it best as built, with the slim-line funnel.)
You can get a Revell model kit 1:1200 scale or Airfix 1:600 scale. The Airfix kit shows a picture of the QE2 with the original funnel in white. These are the only two I am aware of. You may want to have a look on eBay as they are available on there regularly. Alternatively, you can search the net for a model kit at the right price.
Well the QE2 has now arrived in Dubai after making her final cruise to her retirement home.
Unfortunately, it has now been confirmed that her iconic red funnel will be removed and replaced with a 4 storey glass penthouse suite. Her engines will be replaced with a Theatre and her existing cabins will be ripped out and replaced with new ones.
Somehow her arrival in the rain soaked Dubai is more than just the end of her career but the end of her - she really won't be the same ever again!
I think I have watched this video every other day since you posted it. I still can't believe this old lady has now retired to the sun. Not long now until she sails into Dubai - greeted with a British Naval ship and Emirates Airbus A380 fly past - that would have been an amazing sight to see.
Fingers tightly crossed that the new owners will decide to retain the Red Funnel and not slice it off. I wonder how long it will be before we know either way???
The Emirates A380 fly past would be an amazing sight to see. The new with the old. I think it's nice that they are putting on a grand welcome for the QE2 she deserves at least one final honour.
It may be just a boat to you, but to many it's much more than that. Of course, you're entitled to your opinion as is anyone else. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Of course it's not just a boat. She represents the best of British engineering, the best of British luxury and the best of British traditions. She has such a huge and loyal following. She's definitely not just a boat.
Many thanks for posting this! We saw QE2 distantly from our bedroom window, as we thought going into Hythe might prove too much for our 2 kids. Fantastic video!!
The last Concorde landing was 3 years ago on a 26 November at Filton, her birth place. I lost my dear Delta ladies.
The last QE2 'landing' will happen this 26 November just 3 years later. This is no coincidence. Only they should have landed her in her own country, the UK, instead of Dubai where she will be ripped and torn and transformed into something she is not.
Concorde has died off on us. Now goes the QE2. I am so terribly sad and I will miss them all dearly.
It's another sad day for British engineering. QE2 really did rule the waves as Concorde ruled the skies. Concorde should never have been retired. She was so far ahead of her time and still is, but now she is sadly left to rust away.
I sure hope they treat the QE2 with better respect and dignity. She deserves that at the very least, such a beautiful ship.
Although I have a bit of a soft spot for the Queen Mary 2 the Queen Victoria is ghastly and the new Queen Elizabeth will be no better.
Thank you for posting this summary of the final send-off on Armistice day in Southampton.
I am going to Italy to see her and then I will travel to Dubai to see her for a last time while she is still the QE2.
I hate to think of what will be done to her. Carnival (who owned her) are greedy. They should have given her back to the UK as heritage ship. I am sure they would have found her a proper home.
I watched an interview with a crew member speaking about it. I think it is a very good possibility. BUT the new owners are very cautious about image and appearance. I suspect that anything they do will only enhance and improve this sea going marvel. That is my sincere hope. Luckily I sailed on her in 2001 (NYC to UK) so I know what she once was. Thank you again! I have been watching the Bridge Cam daily and lamenting this great loss. The next 2 weeks will be like a slow painful death.
Thank you so much for making this video and for posting it. There are those of us who love QE2 but live in the US and were unable to make it there for the final sail away. I even had a cabin booked, can you imagine, but had to give it up due to a job loss and the recession. A sad day for all indeed. Thank you!
Comments like these are what make posting videos like this all the more worthwhile. I'm really sorry that you weren't able to make the final sailing and had to cancel you're booking that is a real shame. I'm made up that the video goes some small way to making up for that. Thanks for posting. I'm glad you found the video.
PS. What is your opinion about the possibility that the ships red funnel could be sliced off to make way for a penthouse suite?
Further to my previous posting I too have heard that the idea of taking off her funnel is still up in the air. We should all petition the new owners. Why buy such a famous British icon and then take away one the things that makes her so recognisable to anyone who sees her. Her red funnel should stay right where it belongs. I also think the horn should pass on to the new Queen Elizabeth just like what happened with the Queen Mary that way a connection can be kept between the old and the new.
what a video! Can you imagine if she had been stuck fast on the Brambles sand bank! I have to say the footage you have of the Harrier bowing in homage is far better than the BBC managed. I too was in Southampton, full of a cold and a sore throat but I just had to be there. A grand old lady much loved by everyone who sees her or hears her. I can't believe I witnessed the end of her association with this country. Look after her in Dubai
Not sure how interested you are in the QE2 but I have farewell videos from Liverpool where she was designed (at Cunard's then Head Office) and the Clyde (where she was built and launched). They are linked to this video as Video Responses (above).
Thanks again for your post, i'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Beautiful video for a beautiful ship. I was working on 11 November 2008 so couldn't get down to see her.
So - she has gone forever - from the UK at least. Such a shame. She has represented the very best of british design and engineering for so many years. No ship has ever come close to her since. Still the fastest ship afloat (32 knots) after 41 incredible years. She has such an interesting history behind her.
She should have been preserved as a museum piece complete with red funnel.
An overwhelmingly moving video. 11 November 2008 has been and gone already and the QE2 will never be seen at British Port ever again. Such a sad ocassion. I (like a lot of people and no doubt yourself) think it is disgusting and criminal for them to cut off the funnel, the funnel is often the first thing you see of the ship when she arrives at port. Why buy the most famous ship in the world if you are then going to change her beyond recognition???
The plan to remove the funnel is not 100% set in stone. Hopefully if enough people say they think it's wrong to do so the people behind the transformation in Dubai may have a change of heart. I'm not sure i'd have preferred her scrapped as one person put it but I certainly don't want to see her degraded - she should be preserved 100% for future generations to appreciate her elegant beauty.
we shoulod never of sold her

This is a wonderful video. It is very sad to see the QE2 retiring. What a superb ship with excellent performance when needed across the Atlantic.
