@darthroden Only 8 percent of us owned slaves and most black people had a love for their home state. 92% of whites owned no slaves being agricultural =/ slavery. This is a major problem that needs to be overcome. My dad a white man worked on a plantation in the 60's. A plantation is just a large farm. Do you have to have slaves to have a big farm? no. Our agricultural lifestyle, our culture =/ slavery. The only reason slavery ever came over was profitability. It was not a cultural necessity.

Every Southern State completly rejected this offer. The United States goverment in 1861 sold out the slaves wholesale. If the South was fighting for slavery...the war would have never happened.

By act of Congress in 1952 and singed into law by President Eisenhower, Confederate soldiers became recognized as American veterans and given all privileges of same, INCLUDING FEDERALLY PAID-FOR TOMBSTONES!
As a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, I help clean and replace those gravestones and the government does in fact provide them!
Also, there is a Confederate monument at Arlington National Cemetery that gets a Presidential Wreath.

Before the war the south had somewhere around 1/3 less population yet where paying 2/3 of the taxes.Sound fair to you?

The plantation owners and wealthy elites, especially in South Carolina, were skeptical of the federal government's incursion into their financial affairs. Believing in a state's right to govern itself was at the center of the argument. The war was essentially over federalism and the growth of the federal government. It's similar to how many people today feel about the Obama administration.
And which state's right was it to invade Mexico? Because that was certainly not a welcome decision in any state north of... hm... slave owning ones! And which states' money, manpower, and officers had to wage and win that war? Hm, West Point, New York (check), Watervillite arnselal -- sole makers of Parrot Rifles in the US (check), American timber and shipyards to supply the fleet to land at Vera Cruz, Brooklyn Navy Yard (check)...
The civil war was really fought over states rights, and money. Abraham Lincoln said that he needed the southern states to pay off the national debt. The souther states had paid off most if not all in some cases of their states debts, while the north still had a huge amount of states debts. So for the most part the war was over money really, however slavery was one of the many many many many reasons that the war was fought, but definetly not the main reason that we think it was today.

@darthroden Only 8 percent of us owned slaves and most black people had a love for their home state. 92% of whites owned no slaves being agricultural =/ slavery. This is a major problem that needs to be overcome. My dad a white man worked on a plantation in the 60's. A plantation is just a large farm. Do you have to have slaves to have a big farm? no. Our agricultural lifestyle, our culture =/ slavery. The only reason slavery ever came over was profitability. It was not a cultural necessity.

beautiful story; some good souls from Alabama went to Brasil and formed a bond with their good will that is now a legacy. this story does nothing to temper the bitterness and animosity that the flag evokes to this day. Right or wrong it represents divisiveness and hatred to millions...for the record; this gringo knows the grace of "racial harmony" in Brasil, it's real, and i've been touched. I was born in Brazil and like many ones around here, I do love the USA, maybe much more than many Americans that still think that the History of the CSA and its Flag could be considered as symbols of racism. This is cultural heritage and has absolutely nothing to do with racism. Congrats for the excellent documentary and the amazing story. Awesome!

By act of Congress in 1952 and singed into law by President Eisenhower, Confederate soldiers became recognized as American veterans and given all privileges of same, INCLUDING FEDERALLY PAID-FOR TOMBSTONES!
As a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, I help clean and replace those gravestones and the government does in fact provide them!
Also, there is a Confederate monument at Arlington National Cemetery that gets a Presidential Wreath.

Remember, African slaves that were brought to "the South" (only 10% of all that were brought to North and South America) were brought to this country under the British Union Jack, The American Flag, and under flags of other European nations.....not the Confederate Flag. The Stars and Bars weren't even around until half way through the war. The KKK should have never used it in their rallies...it confused the meaning of the Rebel battle flag. Look at the historical facts of the tariffs placed on imports that forced the south to pay a 21% import tax or buy the high priced goods from the north either way the north was getting theirs. Before the war the south had somewhere around 1/3 less population yet where paying 2/3 of the taxes.Sound fair to you?

They are constantly attempting to bring new industries in but the taxes in NY are rediculous. Many businesses are moving to N. Carolina where it's much more industry friendly. You can't equate those people to people of today. In that period people had more honor, principles, values, and were much more politically active. Your point is unsound.

High tech industry has abandoned Austin and relocated to the Hudson river valley in New York. And they were crybabies because they had A) Vast majority of US presidents prior to 1860 were southern B) equal representation to the north in congress despite having vastly less people and despite counting SLAVES as electorate population! C) Compromise after compromise was made to accommodate their "traditional values" D) the Republic of Mexico was invaded JUST TO APPEASE antebellum southerners E) Lincoln's only condition throughout the war -- even accepting slavery -- was reunification.

At the end of the day, the numbers don't lie. The fact that the north fielded a multi-cultural, immigrant, black, and over a million white soldiers, and the vast majority of educated professional officers, and even the religious "moral" majority of the country compared to the southern 90% white 10% irish army makes it abundantly clear that the war was waged -- generally -- between people living in the real world and a huge pack of white supremacists and anarchists.

I didn't say the Confederate soldier was fighting for money. The plantation owners and wealthy elites, especially in South Carolina, were skeptical of the federal government's incursion into their financial affairs. Believing in a state's right to govern itself was at the center of the argument. The war was essentially over federalism and the growth of the federal government. It's similar to how many people today feel about the Obama administration.

The civil war was really fought over states rights, and money. Abraham Lincoln said that he needed the southern states to pay off the national debt. The souther states had paid off most if not all in some cases of their states debts, while the north still had a huge amount of states debts. So for the most part the war was over money really, however slavery was one of the many many many many reasons that the war was fought, but definetly not the main reason that we think it was today.
