I could have done this in one minute by just playing bullshit on the bridge pickup while turning the volume knob up with my foot. Also what the fuck is a DS-1 doing in an amp demo, it makes any amp sound like curt cobain playing a teisco.
@hojima Hey man! I use this amp live (with a decent P.A, admittedly). I run it at a slight crunch so that I can roll back my volume to clean it up a bit (about 9:30-ish, so not very high). Personally I find that with a Epi Les Paul, a Tubescreamer and this amp you have enough tonal options to have a LOT of sounds.
The Hum sound is probably from the power's supply transformer. Sounds like a transformer's thermal noise. A re-design of the supply's filtering might fix it.
I dunno why people are hating on this amp, it sounds great has a nice amount of character... sounds a bit boxy? get the amp head version and a bigger cab then.
For a beginner what would you recommend: Either a Spider 6 line 4 75W or that? I want an amp so I can play along with my friend on his drums and my guitar.
@gdrugg2006 yeah, solid state 15 watt bass practise amp. But seriously, Line 6 are quality amps, and they're popular for good reason. Have you had a bad experience with it?
Yeah, my bad experience with it is the fact that it's a bad amp based entirely on digital amp modeling. They're popular because all the kids in hardcore bands like to use that insane channel and the amps are cheap. Save up some money and go buy a real tube amp. Get yourself some tone.
@gdrugg2006 There are a lot of Line 6 amps out there, and not just those shit spider amps. look up the flextone, which is great and definitely my next amp. Tube amps are overrated.
So...aahh...let´s...aahh...take a look at...aahh...the...aahh...little thing here...aahh...like you see it´s the...aahh...combo...aahh...version...and...aahh...GET THE FUCK ON WITH IT...!!!
Wow...I guess this guy just came out of his lesson...keep practicing those scales, but it's no way to demo an amp. And...BTW...with the speaker out, you can run to another cabinet just like the head version. The v3 of this amp has 4, 8 & 16 ohm speaker outs so it's not limiting to have the combo.
IF YOU HAVE A 5W HEAD AND A 1X12" 70W RMS CAB ATTACHED HOW LOUD WOULD THAT BE? WOULD IT BE 5W OR 70W COS I JUST WANT IT FOR BEDROOM PRACTICE AND ITS A TUBE HEAD SO I ONLY WANT IT TO BE QUIET SO IT CAN BE OVERDRIVEN AT LOW VOLUMES?
@dysfac The power amp produces 5 watts so thats what you will get. But either way I wouldn't bother with this just for bedroom practice. I use a solid state peavey bandit. Not as high sound quality but you can get any sound out of it and it will sound the same at low volumes or even with headphones.
This is a fun little amp. I bought mine and love it. I want to keep it. I recommend buying the one with the better speaker in it though. Not the one featured here, there is a newer one. I use it with a TS( Tubescreamer and it sounds pretty awesome. It gets the smoothest Pure Class A sound, which is hard to get out of a tube amp, unless it's cranked. With only 5 watts you can crank the tubes. Jimmy Page used a lot of small tube amps to record with. For the money. Buy this amp!
for all of you, in tube amp the wattage is given to the point were the tubes havent start to crank, so it's five watts of clean sound and a couple more of pure dirty tube sexyness, hope this make sense
Sorry chaps, but JohntheRipper2 is right. 5 watts is 5 watts, tube amps just seem louder because of the way the human ear perceives the harmonics. In layman's terms, a valve amp fills a room with sound far more than the equivalent wattage solid state amp. go do some homework.
@bigtorquehemi i've tried both the combo version and the head and cab version. the combo are a bit muddy but the head and cab version sounds good. it actually sounds really good with a strat. crank the amp full volume and turn the guitar volume down a bit and its sounds pretty good.
@zenos12 First place I don't/would'nt own an Epiphone. Second I don't own cheap pickups. I'm a working musician, and don't settle for junk. Maybe you should ask questions before you assume and shoot off your mouth.
@tyl0r900 Ya, I know there are a lot of musicians who use Epiphone stuff. I was mad when I wrote that response...Epiphone makes a lot of good stuff, you just can't settle for their low end gear if your gonna use it to make money. I've learned over the years that you get what u pay for. If you buy a $200 guitar then don't expect it to sound like a $2,000 guitar. A lot of price is put into the name tag and I don't go there. You can get a $800 off brand that sounds as good as a $3,000 Gibson..IMO
@bigtorquehemi its a cost to benefit ratio. An epiphone les paul has 80-90% of the sound quality for about 30% of the cost :D Also, a LOT of people play the epiphone dot's quite a bit.
Lastly, just because a guitar is expensive, doesnt mean it sounds good.
Wow this sounds awful... I do have one of these though. It sounds very muddy with humbuckers, but it sounds nice with single coils! It would have been a fair test if he would have used a Strat and would've played some freaking chords!
guyz i'm looking forward to new equipment, i'm about to buy this head with the epiphone 1x12" cabinet (70w), the DS-1 pedal and the Epiphone ZW bullseye guitar (i will also replace the guitar manufacturer magnets with EMG 81 & 85)... how is this combo sounds to you? i want some opinions beacause i am not very into all this equipment selection, plz lend me your lights brothers!
@Datte1989 it seems like your into playing metal or heavier music. I would nNOT buy this epiphone amp if that is what you are looking to play because this amp is basically a clean sounding amp and it it very limited. Buy a peavey VYPER, they are not the best amps in the world obviously. but they do many styles of music well and they include plaenty of effects to play with as well. check them out.
@LeviMan2001 Oh man, This demo sucks. I never really thought much of this amp from reviews and shit, But I tried it yesterday at a shop with a strat and it was pretty great.
When I went to Guitar Center to buy this amp, I saw they had Fender Champion 600s stacked up in the front of the store for $100 each. I am glad I bought one instead of this.
Someone please answer my question, I own a Laney Cub 10, I want to buy a Marshall MG4x12a cabinet, I was told that if i connect it to the Laney, I would lose tone and would not get a good tone, as the wattage of my tube amp is 10 watts. Could someone please let me know if that is true?
Hey does this little dude (valve amp) has distortion ? like to play with it shredding and stuff , please someone answer you answer could save my life!!
Tube amps are rated at watt level for Clean tone. Thats normally between 2-3 on the volume dial. Increasing the volume higher increases the voltage and wattage also in a TUBE AMP. A tube amp cranked to 10 may double in wattage (5 watts clean, 8 watts cranked)
A solid state amp is rated at clean but these amps will retain the same wattage even when cranked.
My 33watt tube head+ 212 cab destroys my friends Marshall MG100 212 Volume wise. Tube head at 3.5 is louder than the MG at 7.
standby switches are not a big deal, the issue is to do with cathode stripping due to current flow before the valves are warmed up, this is exaggerated by using silicon rectifiers. In the old days no-one much worried EL84s were very cheap..getting expensive now so more worthwhile ....
It bugs the crap out of me when people demo a tube amp and play super fast without being dynamic... It'd be nice to hear how this amp responds to some dynamic playing......
It's actually a pretty loud amp, but yeah you're right, 5 watts pushin an 8" speaker wouldn't quite cut it, which is where a Sure SM57 may come in. Jack up the volume through the PA.
Standy switch is easily added, does extend tube/valve life, just modded one of these amplifiers recently (head version). Friend is very happy with it....
Neat little amp. I'm looking for a sub-5w tube jobbie but, for the same money, I'll probably go for a Vox AC4. If you have a speaker cabinet already, the Epi head unit alone is really good for a giggle though.
I like it a lot, actually, just from looking at the video. The interface is very spartan and the distortion sounds smooth and organic. I'd definitely use an EQ with it---and probably a distortion pedal (I like the Ibanez TS7.)
This is the older version, I think there are 3 versions. The last version has three plugs in the back to connect to other cabinets. I believe has improved speaker, and transistors (I think its that they are called). Thats the version I got. Two bummers of this amp still is that it doesnt have a headphone jack and no gain. You have to turn the volume up sooo high to get distortion that you cannot play it in apartments. You can use a pedal for distortion but I want the natural sound of the tubes
Yeah no shit captain awesome. He said its not too loud, and considering that many viewers wouldn't know how loud a 5w tube amp gets, it's very relevant information.
@Xx444nathan444xX If I remember correctly tube amp wattage is rated at CLEAN headroom BEFORE distortion, solid states are rated at their TOTAL wattage. In other words when distortion starts he's gone PAST 5 watts. I won't swear to it but I believe that's what I read on some tube amp building forum. That and you never really want to crank a solid state up much more than half. Tubes sound better CRANKED, solid states sound better with HIGH WATTAGE and NOT cranked just using preamp for distortion.
What you're sayin makes sense cuz tube amps with the same watt rating as solid state amps are louder. If you have a tube head your cab's power handling should be higher than the rating on the head. Dude I have a Bugera 1960 tube head, 150 watts. I haven't had the volume past 1.5... haven't had a chance to play outside my house yet with it... I'm pickin up this valve jr this week, hope my living room can handle it!
I re-checked that, and it's what I read. If you MAX a five watt tube amp, it's kickin' like 7 to 9 watts. A five watt Solid State amp is JUST FIVE WATTS PERIOD. If ya crank it, it just goes into that horrible S.S. clipping. You want like a 15 watt S.S. amp at 50% volume to match the 5 watt ( pushing 7 to 9) Tube. NOT because of VOLUME difference but because S.S. power sections CLIP different.... ME, I want an Ibanez TBX150H. Totally Brutal, don't even claim to sound like tubes, and that's ME.
Yeah that seems like a good solid state head. I had a marshall MG hdfx 100 head and man I dunno if it was the head or the cab but probably both... You couldn't crank it without losing your tone. It really sucked. That Ibanez has a lot more headroom.
Everytime I hear someone say "just" 5w tube amp, I want to place their ears within 1 meter of that amp and turn everything to 10 and show them what "just 5w" sounds like ;D
@chris2002Rocklin well, the rating system is different. A 5 watt solid state is just that, the loudest is at 5 watts, no matter how hard you push it. A 5 watt tube amp BEGINS to distort after 5 watts and can get a lot louder. I wouldn't take a 5 watt tube to a gig with any sort of real percussion though, but it does get way louder. For example, a 50 watt tube amp is more than enough for 90% of normal gigs, a 50 watt SS amp wouldn't stand a chance against a drum set.
@Xx444nathan444xX no they're not. they are just as loud. They output the same power as a solid state one. It's just that the speakers in the tube combos are way more efficient, and thus louder at the same power. :)
@JohnTheRipper2 no, youre wrong. you can put a speaker used in a tube amp in to a solid state and it still won't be as loud. solid states are clipped earlier while tube amps have more headroom.
@HallJJ08 A watt is a watt. So in terms of decibels (measured volume) solid-state amps are just as loud as tube amps. Only the perceived volume is different, due to tube amps favoring even order harmonics, therefore tube amps are only louder to the human ear, not a measuring device.
@JohnTheRipper2@filtecuk watts are very tricky business...are you talking about about the quiescent power dissipation of the power devices (tubes/transistors), or are you talking about the RMS power dissipation at the load (speaker)?
Try getting someone that can actually PLAY GUITAR next time!!!!!!!!!!!

its called a microphone, its a pretty cool invention
rottenXrex 2 years ago 6
It's actually a pretty loud amp, but yeah you're right, 5 watts pushin an 8" speaker wouldn't quite cut it, which is where a Sure SM57 may come in. Jack up the volume through the PA.

Standy switch is easily added, does extend tube/valve life, just modded one of these amplifiers recently (head version). Friend is very happy with it....

LOL @ JUDGING SOUND THRU
-A guitar
-The wire from the guit to the amp
-The amp itself
-The micro beside the amp
-The wire of the micro
-His sound card
-Your sound card
-Your speakers
Now try to have an idea of the amp alone. ( If any of the listed happened to suck you got a wrong idea of the amp )

"Probably not coming from the guitar"
Relics416 2 years ago
Probably was coming from the guitar, but radio can still interfere with the amp itself and not from the guitar. Especially with open-back cabs.

Nice Demo. For about a buck-25, you can't go wrong with this amp. It's a sweet blues basement jammer!
xr650r01 2 years ago
Neat little amp. I'm looking for a sub-5w tube jobbie but, for the same money, I'll probably go for a Vox AC4. If you have a speaker cabinet already, the Epi head unit alone is really good for a giggle though.

you dont need an eq on a 5w amp
sioux333 2 years ago
it doesn't matter how much wattage there is.. it would sound better to eq it because of the muddy sound.

are epiphone amps fixed biased?

Small ones? YES.
carlosmante 2 years ago
theres only one tube in it, you don't have to bias it.

Dont play the same thing!!!!!
Smalskin 2 years ago
I like it a lot, actually, just from looking at the video. The interface is very spartan and the distortion sounds smooth and organic. I'd definitely use an EQ with it---and probably a distortion pedal (I like the Ibanez TS7.)
I also like his playing. Very smooth.
ToddlerWithAKnife 2 years ago
This is the older version, I think there are 3 versions. The last version has three plugs in the back to connect to other cabinets. I believe has improved speaker, and transistors (I think its that they are called). Thats the version I got. Two bummers of this amp still is that it doesnt have a headphone jack and no gain. You have to turn the volume up sooo high to get distortion that you cannot play it in apartments. You can use a pedal for distortion but I want the natural sound of the tubes
fkthsh 2 years ago
"It got quite a bit louder when we turned it up a bit"
Yeah.

i think he's emphasising the fact that he only turned it up a small bit but it got a good bit louder

the amp distortion sounded better than the pedal. alot more fluid and the notes and dynamics were more distinguishable.

its a 5w amp why the hell would it get anywhere NEAR "too loud"?! ear plugs my ass. he is so not rocker.
GNRrockerdude 2 years ago
I had couple years a go 5W tubeamp. Its "low power" but still very very loud. I sold it because it was too loud for me.
Some say that tubeamp have to be under 1 watt, if you gonna use it "knobs up to eleven" in your apartment without nebours
junneboy 2 years ago
dude, most amps are not for playing in your apartment. get a solid state for that(a little one)
GNRrockerdude 2 years ago
Yeah no shit captain awesome. He said its not too loud, and considering that many viewers wouldn't know how loud a 5w tube amp gets, it's very relevant information.
Bobbyeagle 2 years ago 4
It's not just a 5 watt amp,
it's a 5 watt TUBE amp.
Tube amps are WAY louder than solid states.
Xx444nathan444xX 2 years ago 34
@Xx444nathan444xX If I remember correctly tube amp wattage is rated at CLEAN headroom BEFORE distortion, solid states are rated at their TOTAL wattage. In other words when distortion starts he's gone PAST 5 watts. I won't swear to it but I believe that's what I read on some tube amp building forum. That and you never really want to crank a solid state up much more than half. Tubes sound better CRANKED, solid states sound better with HIGH WATTAGE and NOT cranked just using preamp for distortion.
bloodmoonblooz 2 years ago 3
What you're sayin makes sense cuz tube amps with the same watt rating as solid state amps are louder. If you have a tube head your cab's power handling should be higher than the rating on the head. Dude I have a Bugera 1960 tube head, 150 watts. I haven't had the volume past 1.5... haven't had a chance to play outside my house yet with it... I'm pickin up this valve jr this week, hope my living room can handle it!
c32linder 2 years ago

I want an orange rocker 30 combo but we don't all get what we want now do we... Lol

my cousin has one, sounds sweeeet!
crazysteve1986 1 year ago
Yeah that seems like a good solid state head. I had a marshall MG hdfx 100 head and man I dunno if it was the head or the cab but probably both... You couldn't crank it without losing your tone. It really sucked. That Ibanez has a lot more headroom.
c32linder 2 years ago
Everytime I hear someone say "just" 5w tube amp, I want to place their ears within 1 meter of that amp and turn everything to 10 and show them what "just 5w" sounds like ;D
CleverDjembe 1 year ago 51
Right on, haha. I've never even played a tube amp, but I know they're loud as fuck. Probably matching up against 100-150w solid states.
Xx444nathan444xX 1 year ago
@Xx444nathan444xX "Tube amps are WAY louder than solid states."
What is the quantified metric for your calculation?
chris2002Rocklin 1 year ago
@chris2002Rocklin well, the rating system is different. A 5 watt solid state is just that, the loudest is at 5 watts, no matter how hard you push it. A 5 watt tube amp BEGINS to distort after 5 watts and can get a lot louder. I wouldn't take a 5 watt tube to a gig with any sort of real percussion though, but it does get way louder. For example, a 50 watt tube amp is more than enough for 90% of normal gigs, a 50 watt SS amp wouldn't stand a chance against a drum set.
StevieHendrix92 1 year ago
@chris2002Rocklin The guitar player at my church uses a 15w fender tube amp and it overpowers the entire 5000w sound system when everyone is playing.
taypuc31 1 year ago
@Xx444nathan444xX no they're not. they are just as loud. They output the same power as a solid state one. It's just that the speakers in the tube combos are way more efficient, and thus louder at the same power. :)
JohnTheRipper2 1 year ago
@JohnTheRipper2 no, youre wrong. you can put a speaker used in a tube amp in to a solid state and it still won't be as loud. solid states are clipped earlier while tube amps have more headroom.
MrBingping 1 year ago
@MrBingping hmm, what you're saying actually makes sense. I'd like to see a test about that, too bad i don't have any audio measuring equipment.

@JohnTheRipper2
Erm..nope!
adamshakermaker 1 year ago
@JohnTheRipper2 you couldnt be more wrong, sorry.
HallJJ08 1 year ago
@HallJJ08 A watt is a watt. So in terms of decibels (measured volume) solid-state amps are just as loud as tube amps. Only the perceived volume is different, due to tube amps favoring even order harmonics, therefore tube amps are only louder to the human ear, not a measuring device.
JohnTheRipper2 1 year ago
@JohnTheRipper2 @filtecuk watts are very tricky business...are you talking about about the quiescent power dissipation of the power devices (tubes/transistors), or are you talking about the RMS power dissipation at the load (speaker)?
