  • From what i gather..aunt mimi was a solid thing in Johns life. Sadly she was so conservative to the point of racism. She was anti Irish and generally anti anything English.

She would have hated today's doctor who!!

  • Tough old cow, She got that Keith Richards laugh, heavy smoker. She died 10 years later in 1991 at 85 years old.

  • Great insight - thanks for posting.

  • WOW ! SEVENTEEN POUNDS. THAT'S REALLY QUITE HEAVY FOR A GUITAR. I WONDER WHY JOHN WANTED ONE SO HEAVY ? ITS NOT LIKE HE WAS GOING TO BE PLAYING HEAVY METAL OR ANYTHING !

  • @HEARTHEANGELSVOICES Seventeen pounds sterling.

  • Now i see where John gets a lot of his personality. Nice. Thanks for posting. Any more rare treats to come?

  • "She said "I'm an artist" and I said well that's funny I've never heard of you"

    She's so sweet xP

  • the power of youtube, to view videos that were screened 14 years before i was born

  • what a nice emphatic interviewer.

  • she seems to had been a very good person!!! i love her!!!

  • Wow.

  • What a class act she was.

  • Listen when the interviewer asks if she likes Yoko... You could hear a pin drop it was so silent LOL

  • John's Aunt Mimi was a good person. For her to take such good care of John, especially after his mother's tragic death, makes her one of the reasons why John never breaked down from society always being up in his face. She bought him his first guitar, so where would the Beatles, or even just John, have gone without her?

  • Cool woman.

  • They had the same smile

  • @patoolkaxD

    I agree

  • OMG YOU GUYS HAVE TO WATCH NOWHERE BOY???? WOW THE KID WHO PLAYS JOHN, KRISTEN SCOTT THOMAS AS MIMI ARE DEAD ON!!!! THE MOM (JULIA) IS GOOD TOO

  • @ckotcher1

Damn, turn off your caps lock.

  • @lmOnlySleeping Good Lord, so damn trite!!!! Fuck off who cares about Caps lock you fucking troll!

  • @ckotcher1

    Are you upset?

  • From what i've heard in George Harrison interviews & books about the Beatles, this was not a pleasant lady e.g. a snob, was happy to put people down & was quite nasty to people. Read "Here Come the Sun" by J. Greene.

  • Thanks for posting this! I 💜 the beatles!!!!!🎀

  • The guitar is good and well john..but youll never make a living off it =)

  • God bless Mimi Smith! If not for her John would have gone to New Zeland with his father and probably would never have formed The Beatles. I watched this throught tear filled eyes. RIP Mimi Smith and RIP John Lennon!

  • Fantastic, first time i've seen this

  • she seems very sincere. she seems very no-nonsense and bullshit free.....just like JOHN. God bless her!

  • @Tarn1968

wow, did she really do that? that evil if she did. that money hungry bitch really took advantage of lennon. she just wanted his money. thats what i believe.

  • McCartney looks a little rough there @7:50

  • I loved it when she asked Yoko...

What do you do for a living?

    An Artist,

    I never heard of you?

    (she knew)

  • Is that a young dave coverdale doing the interview before he tried his hand at transporting hard drugs in his bands equipment?

  • @SlackerSlayer

No. This report and interview is by Chris Peacock, a young reporter on Southern TV, then TVS, who got this interview as a real journalistic scoop.

  • @renard801 Thanks

  • She in heaven with John & George =)

  • Yoko Ono is an amazing woman - and the best thing that happend to John Lennon!

    i ii iii

  • So did Mimi buy the guitar, or was it his mother. I'm well confused now. I'll never know will I? ;)

  • @vintunge twas mimi definitely,i heard it in an interview

  • @vintunge Mimi definitley bought him a guitar on his birthday, Julia taught him on her banjo and she was actually quite good!

  • I've just sat through Cynthia's 39pt dirge about John and Mimi so thought I'd see what Mimi was actually like. Unlike Yoko who always comes across as phony and devious, this old lady rings true in everything she says. I suppose we'll never know now exactly what went on when she took John from Julia but she does seem to have tried her best to keep John on track - as she saw it. And who could have known that he would burgeon into arguably the greatest musician of his era.

  • @Tarn1968 Yoko was (and still is) a piece of shit.

A musically talentless waste of oxygen

  • All u people think u got some part of John then hate Yoko lol u STILL don't get it or him,,losers.

  • @RaeRae914 I don't know how they do it,,, but have so much respect for John and then go hating on the one HE loved?? Yoko didn't break up the Beatles,,, it was the industry exec parasites that DID.

  • @SlackerSlayer I no! It's crazy and it pissed john off no end but they dont get it so screw em :) yoko and john new wat was up and thats all that matters stupid people always try to break sumtin good up :)

  • Wow, she's quite a character!

  • John was a big fat liar, he was a joke. Die Yoko die!

  • no...it is not wrong mimi told the true story...she is the first who bought John guitar...when he can palyed Banjo with his mum...Julia and then john and mimi went to the store and bought guitar afterwhile mimi get angry with john and she sold his guitar because john does not consistent to his education so john got angry to mimi and he run away to julia's house and he ask some money to his mum and get his guitar again...because that night the boys wanted some gigs

  • This contradicts the John Lennon story .

  • Mimi's yer Aunt....salt of the Earth

  • Why don't they come out while he's alive. Well said Mimi!!!...the best words spoken! Once a famous person dies, all kinds of crap is printed about them. Suddenly relationships lost in time appear as well but none of this kind of stuff is ever heard of when the person is alive...be it John Lennon who died or any other celebrity. Aunt Mimi is a breath of fresh air.

  • ITS VERY SAD THAT JULIAN GOT THE "SHORT STRAW" (NOT SEEING HIS FATHER ON A REGULAR BASIS ETC) THAT SEAN ENJOYED A PROPER FAMILY UPBRINGING WHERE MONEY WAS "NO OBJECT" . AND ON THE OCCASIONS HE WAS UNKIND TO JULIAN. I LIKE TO BELIEVE THAT HAD HE LIVED HE WOULD HAVE TRIED TO HAVE MADE IT UP TO HIM )AS JULIAN DID SAY THAT THREY'D HAVE GROWN CLOSER OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. WAS SAD THAT HE NEVER GOT THAT CHANCE.

  • @gilllew That Chinky took all that away from him

  • The ending is kind of scary lol.

  • The thing I always find kind of ironic about these sort of interviews is the relative or friend always gives the media information that was ment to be personal and gives an insight into the persons time away from the spotlight. If I was mimi I woulden,t have told the reporters this sort of stuff because its not about it being bad or anything but its just its personal to the star or celebrity. The same sort of thing is happening with Micheal Jackson its quite sad really.

  • Mimi was such a confabulist! She says here that she bought John his first guitar but her Wikipedia entry states, "Although Mimi later claimed that she had bought Lennon's first guitar, it was actually his mother, after Lennon had pestered her incessantly for weeks. Julia insisted that the £5 instrument had to be delivered to her house and not to her sister's."

Also, Mimi states here incorrectly that the (Gallotone Champion) guitar cost £17, rather than its actual price of £5/10-.

  • @wsxvgy I think Mimi knows better than you and wikipedia

  • @TheDazzer360 Yeah, I guess too!

  • @TheDazzer360 Check your facts. Read "The Beatles – The Biography" by Bob Spitz.

  • She reminds me of my great-grandma ._.

    <3 ^_^

  • I love her! What a sweet woman - Sometimes people mistake caring love for "being too hard on someone" Where there is loving discipline there is true love and it's obvious John appreciated it! Lol she said he would say "I won't do what you tell me" but then he did"

  • thank-you we have had enough ot Yoko, haha. Mimi thought Yoko was a bum, haha and she was right. She got ZERO out of Yoko like everyone else.

  • Ha ha, good old Mimi ; a CLASS character ! . John adored her and he knew she always did her best for him

  • both john and mimi are up in heaven now, where they should be. earth wasnt good enough for john, thats why he was taken from us so soon. R.I.P john and mimi, we all miss you john.

  • according to the wikipedia article on her, her last words were her last words were, "Hello, John". I'd like to think he came along to welcome her to the other side.

  • aw bless her, she brought up one of the worlds most idolised musicians to date

    R.I.P Aunt Mimi Smith 1906-1991

  • According to the nurse who was caring for Mimi, as she was dying her last words were "Hello John."

  • @drees71 Perhaps he was allowed to come "collect" her. It's not uncommon whatsoever for NDE's (Near Death Experience) to report such things as someone close to them in life coming to guide them to where they belong in the afterlife.

  • @drees71 It's so sad, hearing her talk about John. I miss him so much. He was clearly my hero, warts and all. Not worship, but admiration fro his songwriting genius, his way with words, his courage in standing up to the "powers that be." That wonderful, Irish defiance of authority. He was one of a kind in every sense of the phrase. Unique. Massively talented. I wish this was longer, I'd love to listen to her for hours.

  • @drees71 man i didnt know that, thats eriee, rip mimi

  • Yupp, that is DEFIANTLY John Lennon's auntie! He got some of his mannerisms from her, her laugh, se laughs like that, god, he really loved her <3

  • Never seen her in real life before and she sounds a lot like the older women from my children. | Great post thanks very much.

  • from magazines and books that i read i always knew and understood that aunt mimi was a ver inportant woman in johns life but not i can so why. She is so lovely and has a great sense of humor we can see where john gets it from

  • After reading John written by Cynthia Lennon, I never did like Mimi, but after this interview, she seems like a pleasant woman.

  • @KennKenn16 you can't believe everything cynthia lennon says, because she's going to be against him after all he did to her.

  • @charljenky29 But it saddens me that John could be very nasty with Julian, screaming at him for laughing and playing ; also swearing and shouting at him when he was little

  • @TheKenfig John was a talented musician and a horrible father to Julian. No question.

  • @TheKenfig i doubt it, but if he did that, then that's john for you

  • There were two dominatrixes in John's life. Mimi was no 1.

  • She's fantastic : )

  • She seems a lovely lady, you can see where john got his sense of humour!

  • @mranswerseeker @Mimi didnt force him away from his mom

Do u even know anything about his childhood

  • Mimi forced John to move away from his mother and never supported his interests in music. Mimi did not buy his first guitar, his mother did

  • i fucking hate yoko ono

  • She's just as I imagined she'd be! Thanks Aunt Mimi for making John into the man the world needed!

  • Thank you for sharing this! Aunt Mimi is awesome!

  • Aunt Mimi fuckin rocks!!!

  • "...didn't want him wasting his time playing guitar."

  • Thank you, Mimi.

  • she's a proper bird, i've ave her.

  • well i don't know if the the movie 'nowhere boy' is real deal or not but i think someone like mimi are huge effect to lennon...... neither bad or good...... mostly good i think coz in the end, when he get older and mature enough to think what best and worst for him he will thanks her and that the result that we can see he even give her a beautiful house... and i do not agree that some of we judging her bad or whatever ccoz again she is 'something' to lennon and always be....

  • She's cool

  • A very charming woman with lots of character, like John.

  • She seems like such a tough old lady. She seems like she'd be an interesting person to sit down and have a nice chat with. However, all the biographies I've read say that Julia, John's mother, bought him the guitar and that Mimi refused to let it stay at her house because she couldn't stand having such a noisy instrument in her home. Julia taught him how to play the banjo and he transferred that into the guitar, eventually learning other chords after he met Paul and George.

  • He was a beautiful man.

  • if mimi hadnt bought john a guitar there may of never been the beatles thanx mimi!!

  • @rainbow1494 Well yeah, that's how destiny works...or fate, or luck or however you call it. Little things lead to great things. Think about his: If Alf Lennon never impressed Julia by throwing his bowler hat into the lake, they would have never gotten together to make John.

  • wonder what happened to them pics?

  • strange, she didnt seem as uptight as people say.

  • This woman virtually raised John almost entirely by herself... Dad had dissapeared, mum came in and out of the picture and when she finally stepped in for real she got killed, her husband died of a heart attack... Must have been tough for her, and John was a handful as well. One thing's for sure, John considered her much more of a mother than his own mum, and despite the bumpy episodes, he was grateful to her and loved her from the bottom of his heart. Mimi smith, HUGE part of the legend!!!

  • Aunt Mimi should be the name of a Beatles cover band

  • Mimi is the 5th Beatle! :)

  • I think it's easy to see why John had such massive respect and love for Mimi.

  • She wasn't nice for real.... Cynthia said in the book "JOHN" that: Mimi wasn't that nice person, like she act like in the interviews. She was only complaining all the time and told John awful things....

  • 1:54 "why?!" ...fucking dumbass

  • This is a very nice interview. Aunt Mimi seems so sweet and adorable. I love the way she talks.

  • @ajittffcure But she wasn't for real....

  • ..."the place is full of presents, these pearls, everything.."

  • 2 peas...

  • John apparently wanted her to move to New York with him but she did not want to.Johns mother actually bought him his first guitar. His Aunt Mimi refused to buy it for him actually.

  • @BobReidy no she never ,mimi did, watch the film nowhere boy

  • The film In His Life in 2000 shows John's mother buying it for him.

  • @BobReidy oh right, god knows then there prob all guessing

  • There are two accounts of story which we both mentioned.John did say in an interview that he had his guitar sent to his mothers house because Mimi didnt want him to get one.His mother taught him to play but taught him in the style of banjo and how to tune it like a banjo.Paul and George taught him to play and tune it properly.

  • @BobReidy John was the one who chose the guitar

  • I know.

  • @BobReidy Okay.

  • "...thank you we've had enough" LOL she's awesome.

  • Comment removed

  • She reminds me of him.

  • i love her :))

  • She is a tough old broad!

  • from a very different time, she must've had the patience of a saint, Lennon must've been a handful at the best of times but Lennon the TEENAGER! my god..

  • i thought Mimi was nice. but maybe shes only nice on camra! you think? i heard she wasnt so nice. but i dont know. what you keep behine close doors..

  • Mimi disliked Paul McCartney because he had, she thought, a fake "posh" accent. He was working class (Mimi's husband owned a small business, so she considered themselves "middle class") and she thought Paul not sounding like a "Scouser" was phoney. She often referred to Paul as "John's little friend". She HATED George Harrison because of his thick Scouse.

  • Yeah I never heard the thing about Paul but George I heard that one before. She thought his accent was horrible.

  • Where do you know it?

I cant believe that she was horrible. I thought she was like Tom Soyer*s aunt-stern but loving.

    Dont i mistake?

  • Rest In Peace Mary Elizabeth!

  • Poor dear, outliving her nephew.

  • the truth is Mimi was selfish and a mean person. when Cynthia lived with her during her pregnancy with Julian; Mimi always nag her and she forced her to feed the cats with hake fish that caused Cynthia to nauseate..

  • She Raised John and he Loved Her Thats all that matters

  • I thought "Julia" would've been one of Mimi's favorites. Since it's about her sister. (John's mother)

  • She seemed nice.

I have a relative who was very close to his mother like John was close to Mimi. People like this are very lucky.

  • She isn't nice.

  • she is

  • Love how she picked A Hard Day's Night! I smiled, hehe.

  • I always feel a bit sad for Mimi because she confessed that she always carried a lot of guilt for "taking" John away from Julia, insisting that she raise him instead of his own mother. I'm sure John would have insisted otherwise; that Mimi was the one stable element in his life.

  • Just think if she hadn't. She would have been even more without an anchor when she died when he was 17.
