The minister for Sport condemned the Liverpool fans for the tragedy but also suggested it wasn't uniquely a British or English problem (which it isn't or wasn't). Furthermore, the match occurs between club sides so why on earth do they say at the end Italy beat England 1-0?
With regards to Heysel, a terrible blot on British football, my sympathies to all those who bore witness to the events and the friends and relatives of the deceased.
Reading some reactions to American news coverage of this story all pointing out that the American news don't know anything about soccer or what they're talking about. Well, why would they? Soccer's not a major sport here, and was even less known in 1985. If something like this happened at a baseball game in the US, would you expect coverage of it shown on European TV to understand the nuances, culture and history of one of our sports? Be realistic.
I wouldn't expect them to understand the finer points of football culture but I would expect them to do their research accurately. Though quick to comment on the violence of British fans they skimmed over the well documented hooliganism of other nations. It is every journalists responsibility to gather balanced evidence - this clearly wasn't done. I would understand an armchair news-watcher not to grasp the full facts that's why there is news - to broadcast the truth
