Jim looked ill at the time. It seemed the ravages of hard living from a very young age had taken it's toll.

lol this is ridiculous the system (including media) loves to blame movies and music (like marilyn manson) to justify such shit, because it's so much easier. when in fact they should blame themselves, the parents, or/and society for not helping the kids who shoot up innocent people. Basketball Diaries had absolutely nothing to do with violence, it was about drug addiction, and as Carroll mentionned, "ultimate redemption." But these fuckers love to twist messages into bad stuff just to point fing
Defense lawyers grasping at straws. They would blame poetry for the ills of society. Jim Carroll was the last of the greatest of the outlaw poets and that lawyer twerp has no soul. I read the Basketball Diaries and Forced Entries (The Downtown Diaries) and the Book of Nods and Living At The Movies and they didn't make me want to kill anybody--they made me want to WRITE BETTER POEMS! Legislation is based on this idiocy.
I just hate it when people blame movies and songs for any kind of violence. I just think the parents need to point their fingers at something else to take the attention off themselves. Maybe if they paid a little more attention to their kids' needs/behaviours, stuff like this wouldn't happen. RIP Jim...
This is insane...The Basketball Diaries is so many things...a coming of age, losing everything you have, death, sorrow, drug addiction, and rising to the top despite it all. It is an inspiration and a beautiful story. With a GOOD eNDING. What about Go Ask Alice, Requiem for a Dream, Train Spotting, ....these all teach us lessons, but don't give much hope.
Not to mention, the scene in question is a dream due to opiate induced hallucination, and is representative of how a life of drugs and violence changes one down to their very soul.
It's not about the movies, music or video games. The fault lies strictly on the parents and how the kids are raised. What well-raised kid would just kill a bunch of people because he saw it in a movie? Those kids obviously had a tough life and they just fucking snapped, they had enough of it. I wish people would open their god damn eyes to see that. Not all kids are born with a silver spoon in their tongue

@MsCapricorna That is inaccurate sir.. He was a drug addict but for not nearly that long. I know alot about Mr. Carroll and it is a common misconception that he was strung out for many many yrs. He was an addict from about early teens to early 20s until he moved to Cali and got clean. He had always spoke like that its just a natural happening. He has always had that tremulous delicate way of speech.

They need to learn how to deal with their own guilt instead of blaiming those who express themselves artistically to the masses; which is our God given right as artists. Maybe they would approve of world censorship...but I definetly do not.
this was absolutely absurd. If all that kid took from the movie was that scene, then he is clearly disturbed. The issue deserves no investigation. Some people are innately more prone to committing violent acts than others.
Always finding an excuse and they dont say hey this kids made a choice and wasnt aware of consequences or maybe hey this kids werent themselfs something must have been going on in their head with all kinds of stuff in their life. hey these kids were deceived by evil and voices talking in their head and way more stuff but here they go with excuses!
Jim Carroll is actually in the BasketBall Diaries movie. The part were he is in that underground city area and is talking to this older guy with a croaky junky voice and he is talking to him about how he went to the church and seen the big candle and imagined a giant spoon cooking up “ primo primo dope “.
Jim speaks so eloquently. His intelligence is only surpassed by his compassionate nature. I feel very lucky to have seen him play and read poetry. One of my prized possessions is an autographed copy of Catholic Boy. Jim wrote above his signature, "it's never too late". He's awesome.
(toux)
I've seen the movie already but Im stupid for sayin this, is this the real guy based on the true story from the movie? not Leo dicaprio is this the real guy?
the reporter guy almost said dicrapio... that was actually pretty accurate cause i dislike leo with a passion. i love the movies he's in but not him as an actor....
So there is a lawsuit saying that the scene from The Basketball Diaries portraying a kid killing people in a classroom makes kids want to go do the same, and then they show that scene on national television? I don't get it.
he hit the nail on the head when he said he thinks its ridiculous to try to blame him or the movie. the kid who shot up the school was a coward and should have just killed himself instead of his victims. Then his punk ass tries to blame a movie? what a bunch of shit, he couldn't take responsability for his depression and rage and get help, so of course he's not going to take responsability for his actions. R.I.P. Jim and thank you for giving us a glimps into that beautiful mind of yours.
@bradynelsonblake1 i agree with you on the most part, but Jim isnt saying the kid was the problem, and that he was a coward, he's saying its a product of our society, and because the kid felt he would be called a coward he never sought help.
I love Jim Carroll and the basketball dairies.. The only negative thing i can really think of is a kid (maybe) trying heroin because the movie. That movie is so fucking badass..
Leonardo Dicaprio + Drugs + genius writer Jim Carroll = peice of history and a work of art.
Instead of pointing their fingers at Jim Carroll, those parents should point their fingers at themselves for not giving their children enough attention and let them turn into psychopaths.
Seriously your a fucking idiot if you think just because you see something in a movie or read something in a book you should do it. It's honestly like someone watching or reading Harry Potter and grabbing a broomstick and jumping off a roof. Media cannot be blames for the stupidity of some.
It's all so very silly. Bandura's research on violence and aggression showed that while it was possible for viewed violence to influence behavor in some cases, it was of a very limited scope. It did not, by any means, prove causation .
fair play to jim carrol. he's ditched the drugs, and now he's very successful. he's getting on with his life, people shouldn't blame him about his past. he's moved on, thats the past.
Jack Thompson should be disbarred from law in this country, Jack Thompson should move to a country where freedom does not exist, he might be happy there. As a parent the first problem I see is these kids is their upbringing. JACK THOMPSON SHOULD BE ASHAMED TOO CALL HIMSELF AMERICAN.
Its pathetic that they always gotta blame movies and video games etc for all these cowards actions. If anthing, its the fucking parents fault that their kids are turning into murderers. Its no one elses fault but their own! ............R.I.P Jim <3
In the end, all of us will be held accountable for what we've said, what we've done and haven't done. Whether positive or negative, we are all responsible for the choices that we make, whether in thought, word or deed. It's easiest to pass the blame onto someone else.
It's our job to encourage and support one another. We should always focus on the good and positive in this world while teaching others about the crap many of us go through, as hard as that may be.
Those 9th graders fathers who you spoke to need their ass whooped, in the worst way. Maybe we need an "Entry to Life" 101 course they need to pass in order to keep sucking air on my planet.
last time i checked, jim carrol wasn't the one who held students and teachers hostage and went on a killing spree. all he did was try to show the world his story. people can be so ridiculous.
I'm not sure if the thing about poetry would be true today. Like I know that the girls would be into it more than the guys but like even onfacebook people post song lyrics which is a means of getting some sort of artistic feed into their lives.
mortal kombat, and basketball diaries...seriously?! i suppose it has nothing to do with being an outcast and geting beaten up every day at school...it's gotta be basketball diaries. idiots.
jim carroll is a wonderful artist.his death is tragic yet that is the gig.the movie is based in a loose sense on the book.it was a day dream and maybe a nod.when you are on the junk or any other head, you get great visions of doing shit you would never do...i.e. blasting a classroom.the diary is a diary.i have written in the death of every cunt including gw, and i don't carry it out...it's like slayer or metal because people look for scapegoats instead of looking at the true problem.
aah this politically correct country we live in..dont ever blame the parents of these fucktards that wipe out a whole classroom, lets blame movies and video games.lets blame heavy metal, face it,millions of us listened to heavy metal and didnt join cults and kill people, raise your kids right you assholes and if you want to blame society for you short comings,go have another kid and hopefully they grow up and kill you next time.!
Jack Thompsons a jackoff....What a dipshit, I cant believe they attacked Jim for it, no more than Ozzy and Judas Priest being accused of 2 weak kids in Sparks, NV for killing themselves.....WTF
@SOjuice Yea that was my question where the hell were the parents when these kids were watching this movie? That is the problem these days no parent wants to be the 'bad guy' they want to be their kids 'friend' and that shit is for the birds!
DO NOT blame the Lawyer. He is simply paid to feel and believe whatever his stupid clients want. No matter how stupid. This lawyer could give a shit about whether what he's saying is true or not. He's paid to argue and squeeze money out of the situation for himself and his clients.
@Justen1980 what your saying is don't blame a guy who made a conscious decision to make a living as a parasite, shamelessly exploiting human misery. Some lawyers do good, but most are giving Satan a rimjob
Awesome, i would never have seen this here in Australia. I have always had a copy of Catholic Boy From (tapes to cd's) since it was released, and grew up with his music and his works. what a huge tragedy he left us so early.
I watched this a year ago, and looking back at it I'm impressed with how well Jim handled himself & explained the difference between his book and the movie and real events. Before I was just too disappointed in TV news.
no wonder jim stayed away from interviews... people will try to pin shit anywhere but where the blame should be. jim carroll did'nt raise those kids, mabey the parents should have TALKED and LISTENED to them. it's a damn sad story...
I remember reading Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn when i was about 7 years old. It was a mindblowing experience and i started reading furiously. But it took another 7 years until i found something that had a similar impact on me. I read the basketball diaries and with every page that i turned i was sucked more into it and forgot everything around me. I can only say that the book, as much as it evokes a certain romanticism about drugs, has been a purely positive thing for me.
This is just a complete cop out. Its easy to point a finger and blame anyone for anything. This has more to do with the character of the shooter and his family. I just cant believe Jim gave NBC the time of day. One of, if not, the greatest writer of his generation and he has to be put through this kind of BS.
NO WORDS, give me a fucking break! Would the movie Pineapple Express make you smoke POT??? The only celeb that I wanted to meet before-I DIED!! RIP James. You gave me hope!
This is not even close to being Jim Carroll's fault. They should have Scott Kalvert on here explaining why he put that in the movie in the first place, not Jim.
500million(thats 500,000.000) watch this movie and 3 kids shoot up a school and its the writers fault. Fuck me, get a grip. Look at your laxed gun laws.
Does watching Full Metal Jacket make a kid shoot up the school? Where are the parents? Where are the teachers who should be looking after these kids? This is so off-point. R.I.P. Jim Carroll
Amen. So typical of the sheep to point the finger at other people. It's like blaming McDs for fat f&cking people that go there and order 4 super sized meals per visit. Folks need to own their addictions and issues instead of trying to make a buck by blaming others.
I'm sorry if i offend anyone, but- Matt Lauer is a punk-assed bitch asking the obviously stupid "gotcha" questions in the service of his puritanical masters. A journalist wannabe a best.
didnt people realise that if jim could have actually gone through all that he did and come out on top, and all the kid did was watch the film and went and killed people, that obviously there was something already really wrong with that kid.
i hate it when people blame films, music and computer games for bad parenting and bad life experiences and how fucked up society is. its just the parents desperately clutching at straws because the one thing they cant do is admit that THEY were responsible
It's true. I watched the movie and all I could think about was 'I wish I could take drugs'. Even though the movie does not support drugs and violence, but it somehow glamorises it. Movies and Music really influence us! I cant believe I came across this...
Well you just missed the point completely. How can you say the movie glmourises drugs just look at the state of De Caprio whilst going cold turkey. Look at the things him and his mates have to do to get money to feed their habit and the detremental effect it has on his relationships with his mother and friends. If anything this movie does the complete opposite than glamourise drugs.
I know what your saying, but I was just stating the effect the movie had on me. I know it doesnt glamourise it per se, but i left thinking that way. sorry but it's true.
Evil is evil - not music is just that, music. Though this country seems to have desensitized our children, and adults to extreme violence (you can see any number of (in)famous beheadings online, anytime, regardless of age..................games are full of death as are the movies our kids watch and the music they listen to. I am always amazed that when listening to the great "Who are Yoy?" by the British band The Who that they ALWAYS omit the lyric line ""Who the Fu** are you?",
It's true. I watched the movie and all I could think about was 'I wish I could take drugs'. Even though the movie does not support drugs and violence, but it somehow glamorises it. Movies and Music really influence us! I cant believe I came across this...
hes right, the book is of a completely different tone than the book, the film is depressing a hell but the book is a brilliantly eloquent portrayal of youthful drug use and mindless hedonism
gee, i wonder why jim carroll is hesitant to do interviews...because d-bags like matt lauer try to spin it...jc makes excellent points that go WAY over matt lauer's head...i loathe daytime/morning shows like this.
@pricha24 hell yes. cunts like these are the problem. making something out of nothing and looking for a scapegoat for all this bullshit that happens. jim carroll is a genius writer and musician and the twats that blame metal, punk, writing, all that stuff are just trying to ignore the true problem...i agree with you in full. thank you for saying that...i wish i could write for an hour on this topic.i was a junkie for years and i also listen to music that some say make people do stuff...wow.thx
@timothymstern thanks, i appreciate your compliment. matt lauer has NO BUSINESS even talking to someone as graceful, decent and enlightened as jim carroll. matt lauer, at his best, wouldn't have 1% of the class, eloquence and intellect of jim carroll. i hope that your sobriety and recovery continue to go well. i'm 2+ yrs. sober from alcohol myself and i love it! here's to hoping that there are more people like us and jim carroll out there to balance idiots like matt lauer, et. al. merry xmas!
This was a great interview though and he made a few points I doubt most people saw. The point of the scene in question is that it was a FANTASY that the main character did not actually carry out. I think everyone has at some point in their life wanted to do something hurtful to people that have hurt them, but it's just a fantasy, not something we act on.The blame for
Basketball Diaries had a positive impact on my life after reading it, Matt Lauer did terrible interviews back then too.

this was absolutely absurd. If all that kid took from the movie was that scene, then he is clearly disturbed. The issue deserves no investigation. Some people are innately more prone to committing violent acts than others.

Jim Carroll is actually in the BasketBall Diaries movie. The part were he is in that underground city area and is talking to this older guy with a croaky junky voice and he is talking to him about how he went to the church and seen the big candle and imagined a giant spoon cooking up “ primo primo dope “.
Rbdavid1 6 months ago
Jim speaks so eloquently. His intelligence is only surpassed by his compassionate nature. I feel very lucky to have seen him play and read poetry. One of my prized possessions is an autographed copy of Catholic Boy. Jim wrote above his signature, "it's never too late". He's awesome.

So there is a lawsuit saying that the scene from The Basketball Diaries portraying a kid killing people in a classroom makes kids want to go do the same, and then they show that scene on national television? I don't get it.
kyle0890 8 months ago
he hit the nail on the head when he said he thinks its ridiculous to try to blame him or the movie. the kid who shot up the school was a coward and should have just killed himself instead of his victims. Then his punk ass tries to blame a movie? what a bunch of shit, he couldn't take responsability for his depression and rage and get help, so of course he's not going to take responsability for his actions. R.I.P. Jim and thank you for giving us a glimps into that beautiful mind of yours.
bradynelsonblake1 8 months ago
@bradynelsonblake1 i agree with you on the most part, but Jim isnt saying the kid was the problem, and that he was a coward, he's saying its a product of our society, and because the kid felt he would be called a coward he never sought help.

In high school I was saved by W.S. Burroughs, Patti Smith, Jim Carroll, Coolridge, Melville.
These people saved my live to hear people accusse them and blame them for this senseless violence is about as senseless as the violence.
Maybe if they read the work or listen to the poetry they might understand it.
If you mention W.S. Burroughs' Kill the Badger they probably think it's about murder.
