  • God, Sam that was so beautiful - almost like a prayer. So effortless and so lilting. Beautiful arrangement with your voice just drifting above it all. You were taken from us too soon Sam, imagine what you could have done.

  • This version moves you to tears.

  • My very favorite is Les Baxter. It was simply magnificent!

  • I love the lightness of this version.everyone knows sam could have belted it out. Still love the righteous bros version best. This close second.

  • Beautiful song beautiful Man

  • The best version!

  • THIS MELODY BRINGS PURE HEAVEN TO MY EARS

  • love this song

  • R.I.P (1931-1964)

  • very, really sweet. we miss you Sam.

  • thank you sam cooke to render this exquisite version...rest in heaven my friend

  • So wonderful and smooth! The BEST rendition!

  • if god recorded he would use sam cooke,s voice so beautiful great post love and peace j vincent edwards

  • Absolutely beautiful! Hypnotic!

  • I can listen to Sam sing this on this Video 1000 times and never tire of it. Hes so missed such a talent lost in a sad way. LISTEN to that voice just as sweet butter and melts and enters your heart and lifts your heart high. RIP DEAR SAM <3 Thanks so much !

  • Sam does a great rendition but the Brothers are Righteous.

  • Along with Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline (so natural), Nat King Cole (second only to Frank), Jim Croce, Karen Carpenter, and Matt Monro, and Judy Garland, we truly lost some marvelous singers too young.

  • The Original, and the best version! Sam, you are still loved!

  • magnifique! j en ai des frissons!!! merci!! kiss from france!!!

  • Wow! What a voice!

  • The Righteous Brothers recording is superb, but I think the unique lilting Sam Cooke version is more appropriate to this wonderful song. Mind you - I am biased towards the one and only Sam Cooke - what a voice!! Pity about the vile cigarettes - just what you need to destroy such a gift.

  • @bentleycresta So true...

  • @MarDesire - Thank you for commenting - a great loss, but still the music lives on.

  • ohhh what a wonderful song

  • I love Sam,but I gotta give this song to the righteous bros

  • He put his touch to this song without a doubt. Many artists have done it and all sound good. Tough song but many greats did it. Al Green,Righteous bros, Elvis, Roy Orbison, etc. Each put their touch. Don't hate. LOVE!

  • The best version of the song ever! This man gave a true meaning to the words "soul" and "music".

  • @csalceriu It's better than Al Green but the Righteous brothers do it THE BEST

  • @csalceriu Like Butter melting on a Hot Biscuit.....let's see American Idol and X-Factor produce this.

  • i wanted to like this but it just does nothing for me.....righteous brothers one was better imo

  • Wonderfully understated version, perfect phrasing. He left us too soon.

  • wow didnt know sam sang one of my all time favourites !!! nicee :))

  • to emmakwall - I agree, Sam Cooke must be the best 'forgotten' soul singer - but then, his career was so short. Thank god for YouTube, digit enhancement and a few other things ...

  • It's as though all the great master painters are represented in one voice.

  • great!! beautifull!!

  • the music in that era you could feel love and warmth, the music today you fell bullets and lots of tears

  • @4ucalistyle well isnt it a good thing if music can bring tears to your eyes ?

  • @4ucalistyle I totally agree....

  • @4ucalistyle the music today makes you feel the slut grinding up against you leg

  • @4ucalistyle Music came from a better time back then. It was felt deep in the heart, and given time to build into something special before being released by the artiest.

It was a point of pride. They weren't trying to see who could be the most vulgar, or yell rather then sing, There was soul and pride in the music and not so much about what the money would buy. Though after the show they partied for sure, many sadly flew though their wealth. But the songs are epic.

  • the music in that era you could feel love and warmth, the music today you fell bullets

  • This voice.....no words are adequate.

  • I'm speechless!! I love this version of this song sung by Sam Cooke. Although I was nothing but a twinkle of an eye when he living, my mother loved Sam Cooke and so do I. Thanks so much for posting this video.

  • I would love to hear this a'capella. Anyone who can make this recording happen without the background music can call me a customer.

  • increible!!

  • Can't get any better then his voice. I surely miss this kind of talent compared to todays style and type of singing. I'm with guyfootballfan, at first I thought the ceiling was leaking and realized tears running down my face. Thanks for sharing this had truly made my day. Thank You, thank you sooooo much, and God Bless you with a wonderful New Year.

  • I've got over 20 recordings of this classic, but I only just heard this one for the first time today. I'm so glad I found it here, thanks!

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Enough said.

  • Sam Cooke's voice gives another dimension to this song, this is a piece of the music history. A nice melody played for a great artist.

  • this is so beautiful. almost shed a tear.

  • @lcarter290 i'm crying my ass off right now

  • Heavens to Murgatroid! I had NO idea the late great Sam Cooke had ever covered this classic 50's tune. Absolutely beautiful! THANKS for posting it! You've MADE my day & my week! CHEERS! :-)

  • @JubalCalif You are very welcome! As soon as I came across this recording I had to share it. Such a beautiful voice

  • It's amazing that there are three people that do not like this song.

  • I love Sam Cooke, its tragic he left us at such a young age to me he will always be the greatest male vocalist of all time

  • one of the best renditions of this song ever!!!

  • Not what I am used to, but I love it nonetheless.

  • His beautiful vocals are to cherished, forever.

  • Nobody and I mean Nobody did it quite like SAM.

  • career. He founded both a record label and a publishing company as an extension of his careers as a singer and composer. He also took an active part in the American Civil Rights Movement.[7]

On December 11, 1964, Cooke was fatally shot by the manager of the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 33. At the time, the courts ruled that Cooke was drunk and distressed, and that the manager had killed Cooke in what was later ruled a justifiable

  • God bless you dear Sam, so good RIP

  • beautiful

  • What a talent. What a beautiful voice and charismatic performer. Totally sublime. Thank you Mr. Cooke, I am so grateful for your music, a joy and comfort to me...and make out music too! :)

  • Hi All,

Just to clear up a few things: The Righteous Brothers were not the first to record this, or even to have a hit with it. It was a Top Ten hit at least twice in the 1950's. Al Hibber and Roy Hamilton each did very nice versions of it.

  • @goeatbox1

You're right, Sam was a class act, but he recorded this years before the Righteous Brothers.

  • I love you Sam! I miss you everyday!

  • Married to this song, something you never forget. Such a beautiful classic voice.

  • His may be the sweetest, velvet voice I've ever heard. I was blessed to hear him on am radio when I was a kid.... Thank you for posting!

  • wat a voice .

one of the best singers of all time .wat a shame.

  • The brilliant Sam Cooke. A voice sweet as honey and a lovely face. What a waste of a great singer / songwriter who's life was cut short in such an awful way. RIP SAM YOU ARE MISSED AND LOVED.

  • amazing!

  • I love sam Cooke but what a waste of time that was. Why bother remake a song if you're gonna sing it exactly the same(about).

  • I was listening to this very same version that somebody else posted here on YouTube, and everyone was just arguing about race and what not. I'm glad to see that here everyone is simply enjoying the music, because this song and Sam's singing is beyond beautiful. Awe inspiring.

  • Dude no song u have sang is average or below, and still the only artist in the world anyone can say, you must listen 2 this or else u will reggreate it soon or later

  • A beautiful and very tasteful arrangement; Cooke's diction, together with the subtle key changes, tremolos and tempo fluctuations are perfect.

  • Mr Soul stick with Swing Low,Sweet Chariot!!! Your making my ears bleed!!!

  • This is a true Soul, Soul and nothing more but Soul!

    Thank you so much Sam!

  • The whole things is so beautiful, but at the end when he sings the last "Godspeed your love to me" it's just incredible. Overwhelming to say the least.

  • So so so beautiful.

  • magnificent

  • SAM'S VERSION OF THIS SONG GIVES ME CHILLS, HE SINGS WITH SUCH CLARITY AND SOUL! SIMPLY AMAZING!

  • just a fantastic singer doing an incredible song!

  • just the best no words!!

  • Genius! My favorite artist ever! I love this version.

  • the most incredible singer who ever lived. Long live his memory, Mr Soul!

  • @emmakwall thanks for the link mia X

  • @emmakwall Do you know where I can find videos of Sam performing with the soul stirrers. I absolutely love "It won't be very long" and have been searching for some video footage.

  • See if you can locate a "Sam Cooke Live at The Carnegie Hall" album. Absolute gems, Sam covered just about all the favourite hits and gave it the unique Sam Cooke treatment.

  • I loved Sam Cooke and his music but as great as he was Al Hibbler is the clear owner of this song.

  • @Imayorkiemom I'd always thought so too -but as great as Al Hibbler is I have to say sam is better but we are talking about 2 great artists there is no need to compare Ithink

  • I searched this song and read the posts proclaiming each version "the best": Duncan; Hibler; Righteous Brothers. Even the lyricist was quoted as saying Elvis' version "was the best since 1955".

Anyone with half an ear should be floored by Sam's. A shining example of his incomparable vocal phrasing. Turn out all the lights; listen; and be swept into the pathos the lyrics were meant to evoke.

  • I'm so happy he recorded his own version of this:) What a gift.
