how come these fools are praising the king for the battle of bolougne.Thousands of his men died because of dysentry and the king had no care for his men,his soldiers had no good food to eat but he was eating good food, wine etc and still the englishmen remained loyal to him
@peymaania Little bit harsh, don't you think? But then, are you talking about the actual portraits of his wives or the actresses that played his wives on The Tudors? If you're talking about the actual portraits, it's a little harsh. and if you're talking about the actresses, it's still harsh.
And why call them "bitches"? None of them did anything wrong. Ok, Katherine Howard was guilty but for what? Falling in love?
@peymaania Okay 1. refering to women as bitches is uncivilized. Clearly you had no mother to teach you manners. And 2. Ive seen the actual portraits of his wives, obviously they were not attractive, neither was Henry himself, but the actresses who play them are stunningly beautiful

I'm not sure why the narrative should describe Henry's reign as 'notorious'. He was certainly a strong King with a determined personality, and within the context of sixteenth century politics those who got in the way would certainly suffer. He laid the foundations for England's future greatness, breaking the stifling bonds from the continental catholic church, and looked forward to the British Empire. Without him, Americans and all Canadians would now be speaking French or Spanish, not English.
@ds1868 The comment was directed tongue-in-cheek at the province itself. Elizabeth's a cool gal tho. Notoriety isn't necessarily with negative connotations though. If you step forward and set precedent, especially as a leader of a monarchy, you're going to get torn apart by conservatives. More fool them, then. He was really ahead of his time. Rhys-Meyers really captures the internal struggles of a King rather well. As Hamlet says, "Be all my sins remember'd."

Jonathan is way too handsome for middle-aged Henry. Henry was fat and quite repulsive with the stinky wound on his leg, so Jonathan is nowhere near that picture.
The whole point of The Tudors is drama and ratings. It does not explore the accuracy of Henry's reign. People want to see pretty actresses dressed up in pretty clothes. The Tudors is like the Marie Antoinette movie. Visually, very pretty & fun to watch. Historically, not the place you should be getting your information. Henry's wives were intelligent women. Catherine Howard however was just a teenager. Henry placed Catherine of Aragon and Catheine Parr as regents while he was at war.
Problem is, by broadcasting this stuff, people will think they know something about the Tudors. The should have called it the Mastersons and placed it in fairyland.
@kellyistrying exactly and this series was/is very well received (I, for one, am watching it on BBC America-I FINALLY get to watch a "Masterpiece" of costumes, elaborate sets, and beautiful people, etc. I am a tad bit miffed the writers left out Sir Anthony Denny, 1 of Henry's trusted confidants, especially at the end of his life. @Eloise672 , that's a two edged sword that you are swinging. Why in the world would English actors and actresses portray American soldiers and heroes? It's quite simple! English history and American history are tied together in unison, whether or not, you want to believe that. I am American but, I managed to trace my family beginnings to my English ancestors. So, you really need to think more before insulting an American.
yup...too bad the REAL henry the 8th was a cellulite ridden, ugly, pastyfaced, self indulgent asshole....and his children (including elizabeth I) if you can believe it, were even uglier than he was......of course they represented the english people well.....but this show was a great piece of fiction.....lol
LOL....@Eloise672...you're fucking kidding right??!!...i'm looking a a picture of a young Henry the 8th right now, im not sure if this sonovabitch was uglier when he was older or younger...if you think this guy was "extremely good looking when he was younger", then you need a very special kind of glasses or you're completely blinded by racial pride...my guess is the latter.
@652ndkennard the paintings don't give off a accurate image of what they did look like, Henry was meant to be "the most handsome king in Europe at the time"
@652ndkennard on the contrary, what was classified as good looking now, was most definitely not the same as back then. times have changed, and back then, what we now look at and think is ugly, they used to think was good looking. so yes, king henry was meant to be the most handsome man in england when he was younger, and although his portrait shows someone of distaste to us in todays society, back then it was considered good looking.
.....and i say that about elizabeth, because it was true...holy fuck, this bitch was a pasty, pockmarked -faced balding, spinster.... if you feel these two were goodlooking, then GOD HELP ENGLAND!.....lol
yup...too bad the REAL henry the 8th was a cellulite ridden, ugly, pastyfaced, self indulgent asshole....and his children (including elizabeth I) if you can believe it, were even uglier than he was......of course they represented the english people well.....but this show was a great piece of fiction.....lol
catherine howard, catherine of argon and anne boylen are my favorite. catherine henrys first wife was very loving and nice to her people, anne boylen was incredible with .. everything! lol! and catherine howard because she was just a teen queen , wich a teen myself can relate to
@6teddy6bear6 The movies "Elizabeth" and " Elizabeth: The Golden Age" were made by the same creator as the Tudors, so in essence those are the continuations, but I know what you mean. I wish the show went on with same cast members too.
to stay Queen and make sure England remained Catholic and under Rome. Versus Henry who wanted to be supreme head of England and not bow to ANYONE even the Pope and the Catholic church. He had been infatuated with Anne for years, she did not want to be treated and discarded like her sister. Anne's biggest crime was saying no to being mistress to a king until very late in the game.
But about 10years before Anne he had become increasingly disillusioned with Rome's interferrance and the failure of Catherine to provide a male heir. He looked in to the possibility of divorce from Catherine but the Pope woud not give his permission. It's possible that it was also around the time of his illegitmate son's birth that he was spurred on. If you step back from the emotive arguments about who he loved more or who was prettier what you basically have is Catherine who was determined
I think it's funny that everyone blames Anne Boleyn for the change to protestant England. When in truth she as the excuse Henry needed to split from the the Catholic Church and Rome's influence of England. The facts are that the Pope of the time was against Henry and Catherine of Aragon marrying...but the English treasury at the time was almost broke and Henry's father did not want to give back the dowry that came with Catherine. Henry wanted to marry and he did.
When Henery VIII came to the throne he was very rich, because his father was very tight with the money. He did was not sure of a marriage between Henery and Cathrine because he was no longer sure about an alliance with Spain. But as you rightly say when Henery VII died Henery VIII went ahead and married her.
@Bridie4167 The facts are that Henry VII could not afford to give back the dowry that came with Catherine of Aragon when she married Henry's brother Arthur. So he proposed the deal to marry Catherine off to Henry his surviving son and now Prince of Wales who was 10 at the time. Rome was opposed to the marriage but Catherine's father had a of infulence and the marriage took place 8years later. So he must have had time to fix treasury. I've read, and that is several sources, confirmed it.
and secondly anne boleyn was very different from the other mistresses, she wanted more than gifts, she wanted to be his wife and the crown, and in order to do so catherine of arangon had to dismissed. and she is the one who encouraged henry to proclaim himself head of the england church, read william thyndale english version of the bible and deny the pope.you can't say that she was not a home wrecker, because she was, manipulative, ambitious, bold, fearless all for her interests and the wrong
mrtylers123 and shyfly825 you are absolutly wrong, i mean you need to wacth the show again or documentaries. Anne boleyn was very different from the other mistresses henry had. first of all it was common knowledge to everyone and to the queens that their kings had mistresses,it was even acceptable because they were getting married not for love but duty, so people understood that they were having fun with other women, and especially when the queen was pregnant
Look at Charles/Edward & Thomas Seymour when Henry explodes in the council room (1:31-1:39). Absolutely priceless!!! They're all like "should we start running for the door now!!!" Cuz when Henry was pissed off, you got out of the way!!!
Anne bolyen was not an attractive queen, in her pictures from mid 1500s she wasnt a 21st century 20 something beauty but these old oil pics could be wrong in aspects, anyway ,Henry shouldve had about 100 lbs extra in the last 2 seasons ,I really rather have accuracy over Hollywoods innacurate visuality but....the Tudors was really close to correct in truth events and a great series I really liked it
I would have liked to see the show continue with Mary and Elizabeth, but who are we kidding it wouldn't have been the same without JRM... Also did anyone else sob with Charles died?
this show missed the whole point of the tragedy of Catherine Howard...by this time Henry was old and fat and pompous and she was a young girl who was forced into marrying him by her family, Duke of NOrfolk, for political gain....she was thrust into this horrible situation and when she found love with a man her own age she was executed....in the Tudors she is portrayed as an idiot slut which is not right
I think Catherine Parr was more his carer than his lover. In the end, he just wanted a companion, and she did take care of him and tried to sooth his awful moods. A very brave lady, I think.
this show missed the whole point of the tragedy of Catherine Howard...by this time Henry was old and fat and pompous and she was a young girl who was forced into marrying him by her family, Duke of NOrfolk, for political gain....she was thrust into this horrible situation and when she found love with a man her own age she was executed....in the Tudors she is portrayed as an idiot slut which is not right
@kappleviolet This show is made for the drama, it's obvious that they wouldn't stick so closely to historical portrayals. But even then, I don't think Catherine was simply an idiot slut in the show. Instead, she was young, naive, she wanted to be free but instead was caught between duty and her own dreams. This show dramaticizes everything, so clearly things would be different.
@kappleviolet Judging by the looks of it I reckon your hypothesis of what she was will come out, judging from the previews. I'm on ep 3 so if you've seen more please don't tell me. To be honest I don't get the slutty bit. I think it looks like a love that couldn't be helped and one that she was tricked into by her servants. The idot bit to me comes more naive. Naive with youth and not really knowing what she was. That's my take on her portrayal in the series.
@kappleviolet i didn't see her as an idiot. sure, she wasn't very educated, but it's more her youth and naivety that made her so unfit as a queen. i don't think the tudors missed the point in her character because it's quite debated what her character was actually like. but while it's definitely tragic (and they made her less ridiculous towards the end when it got serious for her), in my opinion, cheating on the king of england wasn't exactly smart lol
anne is the most famous. everyone knows who anne boleyn was cause she made a king chnage a country for her, to marry her... jane seymour is a perfect stranger, no one knows who she was cause she didn't do anything, she gave him a son that died as a teenager, so she was unuseful... and by the way natalir dormer was the best and she had the hardest role.. the second season was by far the best
@balenguer i don't think jane seymour was useless. yes the son died young but at least he lived long enough to sort of satisfy henry with having at least one and most importantly, outlive his father so he never knew about him not ACTUALLY leaving an heir. i think henry's rage and consequent actions in his realm could've been much worse if he hadn't had jane seymour
@balenguer WRONG on SOO many accounts ( Jane seymour did quite alot in her short reign look up history NOT properganda!), however season 2 was ok, Natalie Dormar Was FAR better as Anne boleyn then Helena B Carter gave to her role. She showed the passion, as for Henry (real life) it was ALL Lust Power and Obsession!.
@balenguer i know she is my favorite too and in my oppinion the most beautiful in the show in history she is famous cause she is the mother of queen elezabeth the 1st
@FuerstMetternich Well obviously! That's just common sense, what do you think the Church of England is? It's a blend of Protestantism and Catholicism created so the king of England could remarry.
But Mary was a little bitch, she restored England back to the evil Catholic Church! If the bitch didn't suddenly get ill and become too lazy to name a successor, we would still be Catholic today - it's lucky God made her too weak in the end, other wise she would have not given her sister the throne.
@FuerstMetternich Queen Mary maybe known a Bloody Mary because she killed 300 protestants but the times were different and Elizabeth killed 700 soldiers in under a week because of their duty to Mary Queen of Scots, so actually Elizabeth is more "bloodthirsty" by the way, i was thinking Carey Mulligan for Elizabeth and Kate Winslet for Queen Mary, strange, but a film about them as young sister
@Frogsmere To put it in context; Mary ruled for only 4 years. She burned people at the stake for being Protestant; most of them never raised a hand to harm her. The Catholics that Elizabeth killed (during her 45 year reign) had actually joined a rebellion to kill her and put Mary Stuart on the throne. She was fighting for her life.
@FuerstMetternich Yup, queen mary was an evil little whore. Why? Because 1) she was brought up by her mother, Catherine of Aragon and 2) Because she was a Catholic.
However, Queen Elizabeth actually killed more people than Mary did. Elizabeth was a much smarter and intelligent Queen. She flirted with Catholic suitors from around Europe to stall a Catholic invasion, whilst she built England up to defend itself against our Catholic enemies. She was one brainy Monarch! Lol.
i miss anne boleyn , natalie played the role so well... and it was a hard role cause everyone knows who was and how was anne boleyn so high expectations and she delivered it very well. and natalie was by far the most beautiful woman in the series(like anne was the most beautiful of henry's wives)
@MultiLolerz Well, the first 3 seasons are on DVD, with the 4th due in Oct. You could probably order them from Amazon (either US or UK), to ship to Kuwait, but make sure you have a Region-Free DVD player to play them.
I think the casting choices in this show were brilliant! natalie dormer as anne boleyn was very good. hopefully no one will lynch me for saying this, but anne boleyn always struck me as a very selfish woman (getting pissy about katherine of aragon still knitting henry's shirts, for example). I asked my dad, wo has read countles books on henry VIII, and he said that yes, she had a lot of those moments. dormer, along with everyone else in the show, did a great job and played their roles superbly.
@CatieCass anne boleyn was very ambicious and quite selfish but they all were(henry's wives).. the diference is that anne said and did what she wanted, she never did what the king wanted , and that's the biggest reason for her death
@balenguer yes i do agree that all of henry's wives (except for katherine of aragon and I have to say, jane seymour) got pretty selfish. those who died, the main reason, I think, buried under a lot of other reasons, was that they never stayed out of his affairs as king when he told them to. jane, at least, was smart enough to finally get the message after he told her a couple times. katherine of aragon just closed her eyes to most of it, but none of the others seemed to understand.
@Cla900 Uh...I DIDN'T? Like I said, I THOUGHT you were serious, and NOW, you're assuming I came across as a smartass? Whatever. I'm not even going to waste my time arguing with you. Good day.
The final part where Charles and henry were talking about there past, almost made me cry like a baby, and the final where he has flashbacks looking at the painting of himself. Made me a little teary and am a 23 year old boxer.
I thought the last episode was great, I just balled my eyes out like a baby, What a wonderful story from beginning to end, I agree with most of you, I would like to see more about the tudors
The fascination of the Tudor reign didn't end with Henry VIII and nor should the show. We've got litte Edward succeeding his father and dying as a teenager and naming another teenager as his heir, his sister murdering said teenager so she could have the throne and go on to become Bloody Mary, followed by the legendary and astonishingly successful reign of Elizabeth I, which would be awesome to see after watching Henry lose his marbles for 4 seasons over trying to produce a MALE heir.
i think they should continue the serise with the childen becomeing with how each of them ruled diffently not only from each other but their father as well.
The actor who plays King Henry said King Henry was a worthless king and the only good thing he did was give England Elizabeth. haha. Johnathon Rhys Meyers everybody!
I agree Smudger, the Tudors do not stop with Henry's demise, All the reigns of his children were fascinating in their own right - especially as each reign had an impact on the next in line to the throne and of course their journey there. Elizabeth, whose hand in marriage was coverted by Sir Thomas Seymour - which led to terrible scandal, Mary, who was persecuted under her brothers reign, and then who had to fight for her throne , and of course her own persecution of her sister Elizabeth, etc
how come these fools are praising the king for the battle of bolougne.Thousands of his men died because of dysentry and the king had no care for his men,his soldiers had no good food to eat but he was eating good food, wine etc and still the englishmen remained loyal to him

@652ndkennard actually, henry was extremely good looking when he was younger. Also why say that about elizabeth?
Eloise672 1 year ago
LOL....@Eloise672...you're fucking kidding right??!!...i'm looking a a picture of a young Henry the 8th right now, im not sure if this sonovabitch was uglier when he was older or younger...if you think this guy was "extremely good looking when he was younger", then you need a very special kind of glasses or you're completely blinded by racial pride...my guess is the latter.
652ndkennard 1 year ago
@652ndkennard the paintings don't give off a accurate image of what they did look like, Henry was meant to be "the most handsome king in Europe at the time"
Eloise672 1 year ago
@Eloise672 too bad henry the 8th was actually one of the ugliest fuckers in europe...but he was probably one of the handsomest in england
8999sanders23 1 year ago
@652ndkennard on the contrary, what was classified as good looking now, was most definitely not the same as back then. times have changed, and back then, what we now look at and think is ugly, they used to think was good looking. so yes, king henry was meant to be the most handsome man in england when he was younger, and although his portrait shows someone of distaste to us in todays society, back then it was considered good looking.
ronnastian 11 months ago

to stay Queen and make sure England remained Catholic and under Rome. Versus Henry who wanted to be supreme head of England and not bow to ANYONE even the Pope and the Catholic church. He had been infatuated with Anne for years, she did not want to be treated and discarded like her sister. Anne's biggest crime was saying no to being mistress to a king until very late in the game.
chookfeather 1 year ago
But about 10years before Anne he had become increasingly disillusioned with Rome's interferrance and the failure of Catherine to provide a male heir. He looked in to the possibility of divorce from Catherine but the Pope woud not give his permission. It's possible that it was also around the time of his illegitmate son's birth that he was spurred on. If you step back from the emotive arguments about who he loved more or who was prettier what you basically have is Catherine who was determined
chookfeather 1 year ago
I think it's funny that everyone blames Anne Boleyn for the change to protestant England. When in truth she as the excuse Henry needed to split from the the Catholic Church and Rome's influence of England. The facts are that the Pope of the time was against Henry and Catherine of Aragon marrying...but the English treasury at the time was almost broke and Henry's father did not want to give back the dowry that came with Catherine. Henry wanted to marry and he did.
chookfeather 1 year ago
@chookfeather
What do you mean?
When Henery VIII came to the throne he was very rich, because his father was very tight with the money. He did was not sure of a marriage between Henery and Cathrine because he was no longer sure about an alliance with Spain. But as you rightly say when Henery VII died Henery VIII went ahead and married her.
Bridie4167 1 year ago
@Bridie4167 The facts are that Henry VII could not afford to give back the dowry that came with Catherine of Aragon when she married Henry's brother Arthur. So he proposed the deal to marry Catherine off to Henry his surviving son and now Prince of Wales who was 10 at the time. Rome was opposed to the marriage but Catherine's father had a of infulence and the marriage took place 8years later. So he must have had time to fix treasury. I've read, and that is several sources, confirmed it.

they didnt put much effort into Mary Boleyn, she gave Henry a boy son but he was a bastard
1xsmartxtaco 1 year ago
and secondly anne boleyn was very different from the other mistresses, she wanted more than gifts, she wanted to be his wife and the crown, and in order to do so catherine of arangon had to dismissed. and she is the one who encouraged henry to proclaim himself head of the england church, read william thyndale english version of the bible and deny the pope.you can't say that she was not a home wrecker, because she was, manipulative, ambitious, bold, fearless all for her interests and the wrong
patoumousse 1 year ago
mrtylers123 and shyfly825 you are absolutly wrong, i mean you need to wacth the show again or documentaries. Anne boleyn was very different from the other mistresses henry had. first of all it was common knowledge to everyone and to the queens that their kings had mistresses,it was even acceptable because they were getting married not for love but duty, so people understood that they were having fun with other women, and especially when the queen was pregnant
patoumousse 1 year ago

BetaArtemis 1 year ago
@kappleviolet Judging by the looks of it I reckon your hypothesis of what she was will come out, judging from the previews. I'm on ep 3 so if you've seen more please don't tell me. To be honest I don't get the slutty bit. I think it looks like a love that couldn't be helped and one that she was tricked into by her servants. The idot bit to me comes more naive. Naive with youth and not really knowing what she was. That's my take on her portrayal in the series.
kartkidchun 11 months ago
@kappleviolet well it is afterall a drama
GothicalDarkAngel 11 months ago

@balenguer anne boleyn gave life to queen elizabeth and I thank that to her!
djdiu 1 year ago 2
@balenguer i don't think jane seymour was useless. yes the son died young but at least he lived long enough to sort of satisfy henry with having at least one and most importantly, outlive his father so he never knew about him not ACTUALLY leaving an heir. i think henry's rage and consequent actions in his realm could've been much worse if he hadn't had jane seymour
joystixxify 11 months ago
@balenguer WRONG on SOO many accounts ( Jane seymour did quite alot in her short reign look up history NOT properganda!), however season 2 was ok, Natalie Dormar Was FAR better as Anne boleyn then Helena B Carter gave to her role. She showed the passion, as for Henry (real life) it was ALL Lust Power and Obsession!.

Bk94541 1 year ago
@FuerstMetternich Well obviously! That's just common sense, what do you think the Church of England is? It's a blend of Protestantism and Catholicism created so the king of England could remarry.
But Mary was a little bitch, she restored England back to the evil Catholic Church! If the bitch didn't suddenly get ill and become too lazy to name a successor, we would still be Catholic today - it's lucky God made her too weak in the end, other wise she would have not given her sister the throne.
ajjcj 1 year ago
@FuerstMetternich Queen Mary maybe known a Bloody Mary because she killed 300 protestants but the times were different and Elizabeth killed 700 soldiers in under a week because of their duty to Mary Queen of Scots, so actually Elizabeth is more "bloodthirsty" by the way, i was thinking Carey Mulligan for Elizabeth and Kate Winslet for Queen Mary, strange, but a film about them as young sister
Frogsmere 1 year ago
@Frogsmere To put it in context; Mary ruled for only 4 years. She burned people at the stake for being Protestant; most of them never raised a hand to harm her. The Catholics that Elizabeth killed (during her 45 year reign) had actually joined a rebellion to kill her and put Mary Stuart on the throne. She was fighting for her life.
happybkwrm 1 year ago
@FuerstMetternich Yup, queen mary was an evil little whore. Why? Because 1) she was brought up by her mother, Catherine of Aragon and 2) Because she was a Catholic.
However, Queen Elizabeth actually killed more people than Mary did. Elizabeth was a much smarter and intelligent Queen. She flirted with Catholic suitors from around Europe to stall a Catholic invasion, whilst she built England up to defend itself against our Catholic enemies. She was one brainy Monarch! Lol.
ajjcj 1 year ago
i miss anne boleyn , natalie played the role so well... and it was a hard role cause everyone knows who was and how was anne boleyn so high expectations and she delivered it very well. and natalie was by far the most beautiful woman in the series(like anne was the most beautiful of henry's wives)

CatieCass 1 year ago
@CatieCass anne boleyn was very ambicious and quite selfish but they all were(henry's wives).. the diference is that anne said and did what she wanted, she never did what the king wanted , and that's the biggest reason for her death
balenguer 1 year ago
@balenguer yes i do agree that all of henry's wives (except for katherine of aragon and I have to say, jane seymour) got pretty selfish. those who died, the main reason, I think, buried under a lot of other reasons, was that they never stayed out of his affairs as king when he told them to. jane, at least, was smart enough to finally get the message after he told her a couple times. katherine of aragon just closed her eyes to most of it, but none of the others seemed to understand.
